PlayStation 3 outsells the 360 in July, sez Pachter

According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, the PlayStation 3 finally outsold the 360 in July due to a combination of the E3 price drop and the 360's warranty announcement. His final numbers for the new consoles in July had the Wii on top as usual with 330k, the PS3 in second place with 160k and the 360 last with 115k . This represents a roughly 2x increase in PS3 sales compared to the month before.

Considering the price drop wasn't even in effect the entire month, it will be interesting to see what happens with PS3 sales in August. We're also finally starting to get games, which always helps out sales as well (though the only big title, Warhawk, is coming out at the very end of August). Of course the 360's price drop also went into effect, and their big games are starting to trickle out a little earlier so it's hard to judge what will happen. Hopefully Sony can keep the momentum up!

1. Considering that the PS3 "Price Drop" will stop next month I think that it will drop down behind the 360. Everone is just buying the clearance sale PS3's, because they will be gone pretty soon. Sadly this will probably not reflect future months. =(

2. @1

Are you joking me. There were no good games released in July imagination how well the PS3 will sell once games like Warhawk, Lair, Ratchet, Uncharted, the list goes on and on.

"Sadly this will probably not reflect future months"

Nice concession. But I doubt you would feel sad if the sales continued to beat the Xbox 360.

So Sony...what did you learn?

3. "imagination how well"

Hahaha. I really gotta stop using the built in Firefox dictionary...it sucks.

4. what are you talking about sony's price drop doesn't end they're just waiting until they sell thier entire ps3 60gb stock.

5. Highimpact - the price drop will not end next month unless Sony runs out of 60GB PS3s. They stated that they had enough to last the rest of the year.

7. Hahahaha..."Points out the obivious (alot)" pachter.

He gets paid 6 figures for this? Wow...>;>

Here's my prediction: There will be a huge boast in sales for the 360 in september (partly do to halo 3 being released) Oh and do to the new games coming out this fall.

My other predictions: The ps3 will continue to sell well, do to the price drop and the addition of some awesome games. Oh, and the wii will still have a "Manufactoring problem", limited supplies in the holiday season and last-gen graphics still....

Now where's my 6 figures? Oh right, I'm not working for a company in a 110 billion dollar industry. I completely forget. >;>

8. Wii = Toyota camry, of course it'll sell more than a ferrari or bentley. That doesn't mean the benley or mercedes is crap because they sell less than the camry. I do not want to only play games. And I expect my machine to do gaming right, visually.

360 sells well because choosing between a PS3 or 360 requires mathematical analysis. And guess which group can do the math correctly and which group can't, ending up in buying more add-ons and clutter to their entertainment center later on. Think about it. All the good movies are on bluray. The 360 doesn't have bluray. 11 million 360 owners will want to watch hi-definition movies and wipe out their dvd collection at some point in time. What's their next purchase going to be? If they'r a gamer, maybe a PS3 as a standalone bluray player. Really, who's stupid enough to think that they're going to watch SD upconverted on their new HD television forever? Prediction? 360 owners rummaging the aisles at best buy to purchase standalone bluray players now or in the two years and probably buying the worse one and thinking they got a good deal on it, too. Ironically, they'll become allies in bringing down HD-DVD. We'll see. I might be wrong. But I might be right.

And who says the 360 is selling well? It's doing only a handful more in sales than the original xbox did at this point in time. But in any case, with Bioshock and Halo coming out soon, you know they Microsoft will be here to stay, due to "secret handshakes" in dark alleys with developers and the media and shady business practices of trolling.

I'm not missing out because i'm not a fan of violent, crack cocaine, death metal types of games like Gears of War. Ratchet and Clank and NGS and motorstorm are good enough for me, along with all the PS2 and PS1 i've never played because I've never owned those systems. I don't play games all my life. I'm not going to put a machine in my entertainment center to play only games I don't like at such a high price as $300-$400 and then find out it's defective or that a better version is coming out later on. And then have to go into best buy a week or two later to buy a standalone bluray player because the HD-DVD qualiy of the add on is no good and that all the good movies are only bluray. And then kick myself when after research, I find out that the PS3 is the best valued Bluray player on earth. And yeah, it plays games too. And it actually plays a lot of 360 games to boot. Along with PS2 and PS1 games.

I bought 2 PS3's and a few others have done so. I don't see why anyone would buy two or more 360s unless one is defective.

Let's brign the 360's price up to the PS3's price level and see how well it competes with the PS3 at the same price. That'll determine if people truly feel the 360 is a better machine.

I can buy as many 360's as I want. It's just not valuable to me.

And no offense to the 360 people. If any is offended, I'll take back all I've said and aplogize. This is an anonymous writing and I'm just blunt because of it, but I don't want to hurt your feelings if you're a good person and innocent.

9. Well if only we had the population
(in the states) be as heartful as secret is on a subject...sure there were several fallacies (which I guess can be counted as solely opinion based), but why can't people be indepth with things that truely matter in real life. Like politics...oh wait that would be boring, yet it controls 99% of your life. Wooohooo video games!

10. Why is everyone here always comparing to the 360? Don't we think the PS3 is good enough that it doesn't always have to be in the 360's shadow?

11. Because of marketing, huh? Looks like Gamepro along with EGM and the New York Times are the hired marketing companies then. Look at how they grade the Wii compared to the PS3 and we can see that they're really marketing companies, not reviewers. I guess the Wii just has a better selection of games, that's all. Right. Remember how the New York Times bashed the PS3 on launch day, saying that the PS3 lacked rumble in its controller and was therefore worse than the 360? But do you think it was ethical for the New York Times to leave out the fact that the PS3 has the SIXAXIX? In comparing the two controllers, they talk about the 360's rumble but never mentioned the motion sensor in the PS3. And since when do we give a console only 1 day to 1 week to prove itself compared that's been given two years to prove itself. This example and the Gamepro Wii rating are the "hidden" marketing that's the cause of all this unfairness we've been seeing. Think of how professor Umbridge behaved to Harry Potter and all the teachers in the order of the phoenix books and you will see how the PS3 has been treated. All the media have behaved just as professor Umbridge behaved with Harry Potter by twisting facts and writing up phoney negative reports to promote one console while bashing another. Remember how Umbridge as the high inquisitor wrote about Hagrid in her investigation? Gamepro, EGM, and all the other media - you are guilty as anyone. You are the marketors, not Nintendo or Microsoft. And you know it. People who don't have the time to research. They read your magazines, hoping that you've done the job for them correctly. But we're all humans. Even journalists have conflicts of interests, agendas, anger, jealousy, lust, love, and so on, at times. We're all human. And the PS3 will suffer for it. Nintendo's marketing? Or Gamepro's and EGM's marketing on their behalf? Who in here is having a hard time choosing from a wide selection of quality Wii games? Raise your hands, according to Gamepro.
Perception is key, and who's been creating these perceptions that Nintendo and Microsoft has a good game selection or features. Nintendo? Who influences these perceptions, (gamepro, EGM, etc)? WHO influencing these perceptions (gamepro, EGM, etc)? Who's been giving the Wii all these high ratings for their massively high quality game selections? So high quaity compared to the PS3 that all Wii owners are having such a hard time choosing which one to buy. Right. So high that almost every game has scored below average. So high that Microsoft has won only 11 awards at E3 out of the billions of games its got, wherease the PS3 has been out for less than a year but managed to earn 8 awards with only a handful of games it's got. That's quality to me.
But I guess that's how the game played. Even journalists are human. Even journalists need to eat. Need money. Even journalists break rules every now and then, hate, have anger, love, show compassion -- have feelings and *** personal agendas like everyone else. It's all a part of being human. And I think that's why the PS3 is suffering the negative presses like the one whereby the New York Times purposely ommitted information in a cross comparion between the PS3 and the 360 controller to make the the PS3 look bad. I own shares of stock in Microsoft, but I can't say that I'd buy the 360 over the PS3. I just won't. I see enough value in the PS3 to buy two of them. I can't even imagine buying one 360, let alone buying two. If I wasn't careful in my analysis and research to find a console that suited my needs best, I may have looked at their reviews of shit talking and bought a 360 or Wii instead. Fortunately, I took the time to do the research necessary and just look at their ratings or I would've been one unhappy customer and wouldn't even have realized it. But to be fair, it's not like I disagree with everythign tyou say and recfommend all the time. Just occassionaly. NO one is right all the time, I'm assuming. Not even journalists. WE're all humans.
Sony should win the Bluray format war now and rid of HD-DVD. Once that happens, all 360 owners and Wii owners will eventually want to replace DVD movies with Hi-defintiion playback. Because Bluray is the only option, they'll have to buy a bluray player to match their brand new swanky HDTV to show off with. When they do their research, they'll find out that the PS3 is the best valued Bluray standalone out there for them, especially if they like games. And the PS3 sales will increase as most 360 owners and Wii owners will use the PS3 as a standalone bluray player. If the PS3 is not the lowest priced player by that time, well, at least Sony can bank on the Bluray licensing fees on disks and bluray players sold or however it's arranged. It's important that they finish off HD-DVD, from this one perspective of many other possibilities. I'm not surprised to guess that many 360 owners and Wii owners have already begun their search for Bluray Players and, thus, hasten HD-DVD's downfall. Unless another format or Hi-Definition downloaded movies become the next best thing. The PS3 is a find machine. Even if a handful of 360 ports don't look good on it but considering that it's a bluray and DVD player of one of the highest quality out there, I'm satisfied. I'm very satisifed with Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Fight Night 3, Call of Duty 3, and other 360 ports. Looking at Call of Duty 4 and Oblivion and Dirt, I can tell that the Port quality will be a THING OF THE PAST. Developers will have no more excuses over time. The PS3 isn't a hard machine to develop for. It's a new machine. And like anything new in school, you take time to learn a new subject. It's not hard, it's new. For me, anything above the graphical level of a Wii, xbox, and PS2 is good enough. And even the crappiest PS3 port of 360 games pass that test with flying colors.
However, You can look at Grand Turismo 5, and you can tell that from now on that any bad games are not due to the technical limiations of the PS3. It's based soley on the creativity and the talents of the developers. The PS3 is the most powerful and ideal pen and paper on earth at the moment based on what Grand Turismo 5 has shown. The kind of stories you get from the pen and paper are now totally dependant on the talents of the writers (a.k.a developers), not the machine. The machine has done its part. Go and look at Grand Turismo 5 or maybe even MGS4, and you can no longer question the PS3's core power. Did I mention that I watch bluray movies on this thing most of the time? Oh, and I've played Ninja Gaiden Sigma so much that my neck has been aching for a week now. For me, this machine is a darling. I'm more than happy with it. It doesn't even break down on me, either. Wow. AND it looks good. AND I can enjoy my movies in absolute quite. I also like the black color because black absorbs light, which means that during movie or gaming, I don't even see the PS3 at all. Of course, I cut out small pieces of car window tint and stick it over the Power on and off led to reduce the glare. When Ratchet and Clank and all the Harry Potter and Transformers the Movie and Spiderman movies and Star Wars movies and the Chronicles of Narnia and the Polar Express come out on Bluray, I will not be more satisfied and full of content. Had I listend to Gamepro or EGM's "console grading," I would have never anticipated all these things to enjoy at such a reasonable cost in one absolutely solid as a rock machine. To think that I might have been stuck with just Gears or Zelda and Wii sports. I prefer all of this over the gorey and crack head heroine heavy metal buzzsaw gears of war horror movie games.

Please excuse the sloppy writing. It's just I don't really care... ha ha..

13. Did I mention that I watch bluray movies on this thing most of the time? Oh, and I've played Ninja Gaiden Sigma so much that my neck has been aching for a week now. Had I listend to Gamepro or EGM's "console grading" and Nazi ramblings, I would have never anticipated all these things to enjoy at such a reasonable cost in one absolutely solid as a rock machine. To think that I might have been stuck with just Gears or Zelda and Wii sports. I prefer all of this over the gorey and crack head heroine heavy metal buzzsaw gears of war horror movie games.

Ok, I revised the paragraph to look more grammatical. But still...so what...can't wait for the movies to come out with Ratchet and Clank, sice I've played that before...I've never owned the PS2 or PS2. Until now, at least with the PS3's awesome full backwards compatbility. I boubht both of the PS3's during launch window, so they have the Emotion Chip inside.

But in any case, back to the PS3 while I'm here. Don't like the PS3 games? Play the 360 ports. Don't like the PS3 ports? Play the PS2 games. Don't like the PS2 games? Play the PS1 games. Don't like the PS1 games? Play the PSN online games like Tekken 5. Don't like games? Watch Bluray movies. Don't like bluray movies? Watch $1000 Denon DVD player quality DVD movies. Don't like movies? Listen to CD's. Don't like CD's? Listen to multichannel SACD playback. Don't like SACD playback? Listen to MP3. Don't like judder in movies? Use the 1080p@24hz feature for cinemtion 3-3 pulldown motion. Don't like MP3? Share photos. Don't like sharing photos? Do your home on it as a PC. Don't like doing homework and rersearch on it? Chat online or surf the internet. Don't like surfing the net? Do folding. DOn't like folding? Use it as scientists are by letting it drive yoru car. You get the idea...this is one fine machine...

15. I can give a rat's ass about Gears of War or Bioshock or any of that crap. Who the hell would spend so much money $300-$400 + $100 plus on internet fees just to play two to three games? And play ONLY games, nothing else. Especially on a loud, clunky, prone to damage toy that looks ugly. And then because most humans today will eventually switch to Hi-defintion movies, unless downloads are the next rave, who the hell will be going out to buy another bluray player - the PS3 to accompany their "inexpesive" $300-$400 three game machine?

Well, no hard feelings. Just sharing my thoughts. And I'm not PS3 fanboy, so don't expect me to revise adn double check my writings. And like before, no hard feelings. I know some of you 360 people are decent folks, and I don't want you to feel hurt. You have your circumstances that made you decide to buy the 360, and that's your money. What's important is that you're happy with it and that you don't detrimentally affect me...!!! lol.

16. Again, you'll have to excuse my writing at the moment. I'm a bit carless tonight. But just one last note that I've mentioned several times already. We already know that journalists have biases and emotions and perceptions and personal agendas and conflics of intersts and greed and compassion like all humans do, and thus it may reflect in their writing to suit their intent. But one thing should better determine which machine is better than the other once and for all, since you can't really depend on "objective" journalist that aren't just kids in a candy store having a splurge.

1) Lay out on paper all the facts about two machines in terms of features and power and so on and game coming out -- all games, including PS2 and PS1 and xbox games THAT ARE COMPATIBLE.

2) Raise the xbox360's price to the PS3's price at $499 and $599.

Once the 360 is at the PS3's price level, we'll truly see which console is better. Heck, raise the Wii's price to the PS3's level, too. Let's see how well it does at that price range. Now we'll know for sure which machine consumers know is better or not.

Posted at 2:32AM on Aug 19th 2007 by secret

17. Raise your price to the PS3's price, and let's see how tough you really are. Ten dollars says that the PS3 will eat the 360 alive.

Lol, I love it! I'm working a double tonight and that helped out alot. As a matter of fact, I brought my PS3 to work with me.

@9
I got over the fact that Halo 3 is the media darling when I learned that I'll be playing games like Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Unreal Tournament 3, Uncharted, Rachet & Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze, GT5, Infamous, FFXIII, White Knight Story, Folklore, The Eye of Judgement, L.A. Noire, Tekken 6, and a few others. Actually, I'm not gonna lie, I got over it after I played Resistance.

19. LOL I bought a 360 and I'm happy bout it. Okay who cares that the ps3 can play a freaking Blue ray? I dont even care about high def, I dont even have a high def - add on to my 360. Like most people, I don't see that much of a difference. Also whoever said that 360 owners are stupid because 360 only plays games are retarded. LOL of course I bought the 360 just for games. Just as how I bought the ps2 ps1 n64 and all those for games. I didn't buy it to watch some freaking movie. If the movie was that important to me, I'd watch it in theatres. Plus the community. Who has a fucking ps3? NOBODY. Everybody has a 360, thus which would I choose. Play with my friends on 360 for about 400 bucks. Or play with nobody on ps3 for 600 bucks? The choice is clear. And going about games. Ps3 has no games. 360 has Bioshock and Halo. Plus 360's framerate for Madden 08 is TWO TIMES FASTER then Ps3's framerate for madden 08. THAT'S HILARIOUS. Only game you guys got comin to ya is MGS3. Only reason I'd ever regret not buying a Ps3. But I'm not going to pay fucking 600$ for a dvd player and MGS3. Only a retard who actually spent his money for something like that, would try to justify why he bought it, on a website. Plus Ratchet sucks.

Posted at 2:46AM on Aug 19th 2007 by Mozes540

20. @20
It's funny when you guys that can't afford the good things in life say things like, "Who cares about HD, I can't hardly tell the difference between standard definition and high definition." Lol, what are fucking blind you jack ass?

Plus, you're being so short sighted when you say that you bought the 360 because more people own the 360 as opposed to the PS3. Think about it genius, the 360's been out a year longer than the PS3. Once more people start switching over to the current gen from playing their PLAYSTATION TWOs, more people will own a PS3 than a 360, you can count on it.

Especially with the news that MicroSoft can't figure out what's wrong with it's machines, hence the 3 year extended warranty. You know why they extended it for 3 years,(here's a hint, they didn't do it because they're so damn generous), it's because they don't see themselves getting it worked out in the foreseeable future. This is why more people will end up buying a PS3 once more people start switching over to the current gen, Sony has made one hell of a console. One that has a .02% failure rate as opposed to a 30+% failure rate. You know what's funny, you mention that the 360 Madden's FPS is twice the amount as that of the PS3's, you forgot to mention that the 360's F.U.R. is some ungodly amount more than the PS3's too. By the way, if you are wondering what FUR stands for, it's Fuk-Up-Rate, you like that.

Think about what you say before you actually say it, that way you don't sound like a dumbass all the time. Oh yeah, only a retard would purchase something they know is bound to brake.
