Uncharted interview divulges game size, SPU usage

Evan Wells sat down with PALGN for an interview about Uncharted recently, talking the game up with words of praise and the promise of treats. Well, he talked about the game, anyway. It's a long interview, so we'll skip the story stuff in case you don't want to know. Wells believes our first playthrough will last from 10-12 hours, but with four levels of difficulty, the hardcore bunch will probably enjoy trying out the hardest mode of all. There are 60 little treasures hidden throughout the game as well, so finding them will probably take more than one run through the game unless you're very, very meticulous.

Also, "we've also put into the game a medal system, so as you're playing the game if you perform special feats you'll get medals, such as getting a certain number of headshots, getting a certain number of headshots in a row, killing people, doing a special brawl combo, just lots of things along the way that will unlock the medals. The medals then contribute to your overall medal score and your medal scores then feed into our bonus system which allows all of the unlockables to be unlocked." Sounds like there's plenty to do in the game other than just blaze through it! The medal system is also planned to turn into a trophy system once Home hits. Rumble is built right into the game, so for those of you who'll be importing Dual Shock 3's, you've got a surefire rumbling game on your hands.

The meat of the interview is why Uncharted could only be on the PS3. Wells explains a number of reasons. First, standard hard drive creates the seamless, load free world. Blu-ray helped squeeze the 24GB game on a single disc -- he says it wouldn't have been impossible on DVD, but the game would have been very, very different. Future games, Wells declares, will probably demand a dual-layered Blu-ray disc. The Cell processor served as a very handy tool for compiling all of Nathan's 3,500 animations as well, so you'll see the right reaction, or a random/new reaction, every time something happens. Wells admitted that "As far as the Cell processor and the SPU's are concerned we were only using about 1/3 to 1/2 of the SPU's at one time and so there is still quite a bit more we can do." We can't wait to see what the future holds, but for now, we can't wait to play Uncharted!

5. Wow this game looks better and better everytime. I can't wait to get my hands on this thing or at least try the demo. And if this is only using half of CELL's power, then I am very excited for the future. Also, those blu-rays are coming up more and more in developer interviews with relevant devs. I'm glad Sony chose to go with the next-gen technology instead of some yestergen crap-box.

7. 10 to 12 hours of game play is great for me. With all the dying I'll be doing or trying to get head shots that will be around 15 hours for me.

8. OMG i wish this game had online play.. Gears Of War style.... i wouldve bought it in an instant im the type who likes to play it through once and then get the online experience for 50 - 60 hours but i think i might skip this one... lets wait till the demo though...

9. I respect this guy now for his comments. It kinda bugs me when (as I own both systems) they make comments like "impossible to do on dvd!!", when it actually isn't. This guy said it wasn't impossible, just would have been different. He wasn't trying to start a flame war about blu-ray vs normal dvd.

10. Ok so have any of you experienced problems with System Version 1.94? It's totally making my PS3 games unplayable (by distorting the graphics and making them look like they're puking all over each other), and it's making my PS3 freeze at random when I turn it on or quit a game, but hey, who's counting?

12. @8: No issues with 1.94 here. Perhaps something else is wrong? Might be time for a tech support call :(

13. It's amazing how this game has gone from being something I'm not interested in, to being the game I'm most looking forward to this year.

I cannae wait.

14. I laugh at people who say DVD is here for good...
Blu-Ray is the next media and devs are gonna use the space they need.
This game looks amazing and PS3 owners should seriously consider it...especially cause it's built ground up to run on a PS3!

17. hey Nick, did you write this after or before the second part of the interview, because some of the stuff mentioned on the second part are quite interesting

Posted at 2:25PM on Oct 30th 2007 by Noshino

18. @8: sounds like overheating to me, call Sony, they'll get you straightened out and it won't take 4-6 weeks.

And before you ask for Sony's number, look in your owner's manual. You did keep it, right?

For the record, many games of EoJ and R&C: Future since the 1.94 update, zero problems here with a launch PS3.

Posted at 2:57PM on Oct 30th 2007 by Popfrogs

19. @ Noshino -- After, honestly. For our posts, we're supposed to keep them to three paragraphs unless it's a feature, so I had to cut corners to get all of the first part summed up.

I wholeheartedly plan on going through the second half of the interview for more information scalping, but for the sake of space, it had to get overlooked for this post. Hope that's not too disheartening! =)

20. @Todd

No problems here and I've gone through a game and a half of R&C, some EOJ and some NBA 2K8. Something chew your cables?!?
