PES 2008 features serious lag on PS3

"Konami Digital Entertainment has uncovered issues which can affect the online gameplay quality of PES 2008 on PLAYSTATION 3. We are working at full strength to find a solution as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologise for this inconvenience. Further announcements will be made as soon as we have additional details."

The PS3 version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 has been giving a lot of soccer fans some serious distress. The online mode of PES is seemingly broken, according to various reports to Pro-G. "PS3 PES 2008 is practically unplayable online, with the ball pinging about uncontrollably and players randomly disappearing and reappearing." It notes that the PS3 version also suffers from a poor framerate, something not found in the Xbox 360 version.

Certainly, Konami is trying to fix these problems. However, it's disappointing to see yet another game get such poor treatment on Sony's machine.

1. Not to be off topic, but Skate has some framerate issues on the PS3...having a consistent framerate for a skating game, or anything with timing is pretty important.

4. How did they not notice this in testing????

5. That's bad news, but what do they expect for a 360 port?

Sony really needs to get on the ball and make it worth a developer's while to develop concurrently for both systems on non-exclusive games.

Quality is really suffering on games developed for 360 and ported over to PS3, especially since it seems the porting for PS3 work most often happens on a rush to make a delayed release date.

Hopefully Konami will have this mostly straightened out before Pro Evo is released in the US.

6. @1 I have skate and have not noticed any frame rate issues.

7. It's Soccer, the delays and the slow frame-rate just add to the realness of an already boring sport. I wouldn't be surprised if the players didn't move at all. That would make those 1 to 0 games so much more exciting.

8. At some point guys, if game after game fails on Sony's super hyper ultra fantastic wetdream machine, maybe it isn't the games...

From Gamespot re: PS3 skate (;review):

"But any points the PS3 version earns are totally negated by its awful frame rate. Whether you're playing alone or online, the game drops frames all over the place when anything starts moving quickly. This is a very timing-oriented game, and having a frame rate this bad really hurts the gameplay."

Don't get me wrong, I'm a PS3 fanboy as much as the next guy (if not more), but it is pretty frustrating.

11. The 360 is just a PC incognito. This is why developers LOVE to develop games on it. All they have to do is port their PC titles straight over. Everything about it is a PC.

The PS3 on the other hand is a dedicated system, which is not a PC. It's a new system with a new architecture. Developers are LAZY. They don't want to learn the new architecture. They would rather recompile existing code and call it a day.

Its not the games, its the people that make them.

13. i wish developers would quit porting 360 games to PS3 and instead opt to build it alongside the 360 versions.

COD4 is doing this and it's proving to best the 360 version in lighting and texture resolution.

the PS3 just plain sucks when it comes to porting.

Couldn't agree with you more.

15. and no Ninja Gaiden Sigma doesn't count. that was improved upon and took time to port which most developers don't have when trying to get a coinciding release date for both platforms.

I don't believe your statement is very acurate, seeing as how there are plenty of games, i.e. Resistance, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, WarHawk, that do not suffer from frame rate issues. Which, by looking at the pattern would suggest that it is not due to the hardware, but quite possibly a coding problem.

17. I got is the only time I have frames "dropping all over the place" and its not even that bad.....and in the single player campaign.....I get the "occasionally rare" framerate issue when a lot of happening on screen (other skaters, cars, peds) but it definitely does not detract from the game plays smooth as butter 99.2% of the time....i dunno what to say.

18. It's the lazy dev's and not the system to blame here guys. Say what you want about some of the issues Warhawk has had but lag definitely isn't one of them. That is as fast paced, timing sensitive game as you can imagine and it's virtually flawless from a framerate and lag perspective.

Why can't a superb dev like Konami figure this out as well? The Xbox and PS3 are DIFFERENT, when are dev's going to quit whining while trying to make the games the same on both systems and just start building games for each system?

Not to flame or anything, but if I came to your job and told you to do something different and in a much harder way with no real benefits (small install base so far . . . ) would you do it? Or would you continue to do it the same way you have been?
Developers aren't lazy, they work hard to get games done, the problem is that cost benefit scale has not tipped in favor of developing only on the PS3 yet, it will, but until then it is what it is. I had been very against the ps3 for a long time (for some reason), now I cannot wait to get one as soon as MGS4 comes out. And I think soon after that Developers will see its benefits, and that price drop will help too.
