Music, video distribution the future of PlayStation Network

The line that separates the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 continues to grow thinner. Just recently, rumors sprouted that Microsoft has plans for a Home-style service, similar to that of the PS3's. And now, it seems, Sony is preparing to launch video and music distribution, which has been present on the 360 for a while now.

"We are building a software infrastructure to distribute video and music, more particularly video, through the PlayStation Network," Sony chief executive Howard Stringer recently said. While he gave no confirmation when we should expect such a service, he did say Sony plans to incorporate the PSP into the fray, as well.

"That is a Japanese and American combined effort to build a platform around a common software architecture to distribute video via the PlayStation network into the [PSP handhelds] and beyond," he said."We are trying to get our devices to talk to each other efficiently. PlayStation Network should migrate from gadget to gadget." If Sony can successfully make a no-hassle transfer of downloaded movies from the PS3 to the PSP, it definitely has the potential to be more compelling than its rival.

1. Hope they can change the PSN interface too. I like it the way it is, but I don't think it's time for a change, especially with something like this coming.

I think they've shown some concepts before.

2. I don't want a hassle free ps3->psp transfer(although that'd be cool if I had one), but a ps3->mp4 enabled phone or my pc(preferably not a windows specific solution).

Oh and how can the xbox guys make a home service without a harddrive as standard? Will they cut the core users?

3. Its not gonna happen anytime soon. I'm not holding my breathe on this one. They've been talking about this since the psp hit in 2005 and you see where that is. The PSP could have been what the Ipod is now but Sony sat on their asses counting PS2 money and not doing their jobs. How can a company like Sony not have music and Movies. They own all that stuff. Even if it was just sony owned music and Movies to start. Thats something. Sony is just ass with this stuff and I'M TIRED of them just talking about it. Make it happen already.

4. they have already shown a feature with home capabilities on mobile devices, such as being out, whip out your phone with a camera and home capabilities, take a shot, and choose a frame for it (wont be the actual 3d thing of course) get home, go on HOME, go to your private space, woosh there it is, they already showed people that at E3 or something, seen the video on youtube.

5. - 'SONY Announces Home' -

Xbox Fanboys - "What a waste of time!"... "So lame!"... "What kind of idea is that?"... "It'll never happen!"... "Sony need to stop focusing on something so boring!"

- 'Just recently, rumors sprouted that Microsoft has plans for a Home-style service, similar to that of the PS3's.' -

Xbox Fanboys - "Oh good job Microsoft!"... "Nice!!"... "What an idea!".... "I bet it's gonna be awesome!"... "Imagine the possibilities"... "It's certainly interesting & never done before!"...

6. The Australian PS Store gets Music Videos every week.. are they talking about scaling this up substantially? or are they just going to start giving the US/JP regions some lovin?

7. is it just me or does this post seem to suggest that the xbox is supierior to the ps3?

i agree with the comment about sony getting off their ass but you have to understand they have to give us something to look forward to. if they never announce anything for the future then we will lose intrest. i have been waiting for the psp camera since the japan launch.

home is probably gonna be launched early 09 if the concept doesnt get canned.

and the one thing i see wrong with the ps3 psp store share feature. is the amount of time it is going to take to transfer from 3 to p.

sony has been doing a good job so far. but they need to get on the ball. i am a sony fanboy. and i plan on staying here for a long long time. no amount of fps games no amount of cute girly graphics matched with a wage wand is gonna make me stray from sony.

8. This is no good to show a story on. All it does is spread hope to us...which in turn will lead to disappointment. :(

9. Sony DOES need to stop focusing on HOME and focus on bringing PS3 and the PSP into sync. PSN is made up of a broken server network, broken LIVE experience (game invites from the XMB?..yah right!), a simple web page for downloads (where the HELL is my XMB integration?) and STILL no PSP-accessible store. Sony still has a LOT of catching up to do in terms of games and infrastructure to the 360, and HOME does nothing to fix this.
