Killzone 2 devs tout Blu-ray as necessary, ability to jump

Because we just can't get enough of Guerrilla Games' high-profile Killzone 2, we're crashing another interview party that talks about environmental hazards and new gameplay elements. Instead of beating around the bush, we're going to dive right in and pick out all the juicy berries growing on the branches.
  • The Helghasts have turned the environment of their home planet into weaponry, like the ARC weapon that harnesses lightning as firepower. While not directly an environmental hazard, there are other things planned to discuss. Like lightning?
  • You can't choose different characters to play as in Killzone 2, since you follow the journey of Sev. You will meet up with buddies who have varied abilities, but as far as personal choice goes, you've got Sev. Luckily, he can wield most weapons ... just two at a time.
  • Too early to confirm vehicles, but elements from Liberation, like boss battles and healing allies, will probably make appearances.
  • You can jump in Killzone 2, but you can't jump and fire your weapons at the same time. There will also be a lot of context-based actions like leaning and peeking against and around things.
  • No word on voice actors yet, but it almost sounds like the devs are hiding some bigger names than we'd expect.
  • Better AI is a must, what with all the destructible environments and explosive bits found in the battlefield. Enemies and squad allies need to be aware of all that and each other, crafting complex attack and defense strategies on the go.
On a final note, Guerrilla Games gave a nod to the Blu-ray camp, saying the graphics and level of detail found in the game could only be done with large storage space. "It is not a luxury to have Blu-ray, but rather a necessity, as compression only gets you so far. I mean, the level that we showed at E3 and Leipzig topped out around 2GB! Also having the CELL and SPUs means we can offload all of our physics processing to an SPU, or process AI using the SPU's." We're excited to hear more about the game, especially a solid release date. However, we don't expect it to come out anytime soon -- we want them to relax and craft an excellent gaming experience for us.

5. A HD drive will appear in the next 360, the '360 5 steps behind Sony still' Edition.
The original 360 was never next gen, there was nothing new about it and refering to it as such is nothing but a lie and an insult to technology.
It took them about 18 months to introduce HDMI for heavens sake, im just suprised it didnt come with a tape deck.

Cant wait for this title amongst others, this game will play a huge part in the PS3 future success, IMO more than any other game, if it can obtain Halo/Quake status then it'll be a huge boost to the platform. Still, i want GT5 more and will always prefer PC based shooters, but theres always the odd exception to the rule.

6. The wait is finally coming to a close. We are about to get some kick ass exclusives in bundles to add to the already great exclusives that are out like Resistance, Heavenly Sword, and MotorStorm. I'm also glad to see developers taking advantage of the space of blu-ray.

7. Darn no jumping and shooting at the same time.
PS if you do that in Warhawk with the Assault Rifle, you usually kill.

8. Wait...two weapons at a time? Wielding or in the inventory. I sure as hell don't like having to decide every 2 minutes if I want that gun or the one I've already got. Too friggin' complicated, just give me everything like Resistance.

9. @ emerald... Halo 3 got boring already?! or you're waiting on your 360 back from repair?

I think console's game selection for the holiday has its own ups and downs. I see Halo 3, Mass Effect, PGR 4, and Ace Combat for 360, competing against Haze, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Eye of Judgment, Folklore, Warhawk, and GT 5 Prologue.

The idea that 360 has better games is a matter of opinion and that it has more games is a matter of time. I'm sure you choice the 360 because you liked what it offered and it fitted you just fine, but please stop trying to make your opinion sound like facts.

I liked Resistance too. It was incredibly easy to pickup (it was my first FPS).

Finally some solid info on Killzone 2. Personally I think Blu-Ray is becoming more necessary. As long as the game has good load times then I am happy.

Can someone tell me if this is true

If you compress a file it takes longer to load?

I simply listed highlights for games out H2 2007. As for texture compression, it is obvious that higher compression means more work on how much you can display. I've seen a lot of texture compression from video cards and there is a limit on how much you can compress before you have to reduce the complexity of the texture to meet the size requirements. I believe their point is that a larger storage medium allows them to do this without sacrificing texture quality or using a complicated compression algorithmn, so they can stay focused without worrying this overhead. Here's a article I found on texture compression and it is a bit insightful:

That is a good line. No an excellent line.

Generally, load times are I/O limited; the processor sits idle as the disc drive spools the gameplay data into ram. If there are less data bits to spool then the level finishes instancing faster. The CPU is doing more work, yes, but it would otherwise idle.

17. by better games for the 360, they mean all the shooters that are being ported to pc. and by more good looking games coming up, they mean mass effect. when WE say better, we mean exclusives, resistance, motorstorm, heavenly sword, warhawk, ridge racer 7. and for upcoming games. god of war 3, final fantasy 13, final fantasy 13 versus, MGS4, killzone 2, ratchet and clank, jak and daxter, littlebigplanet, the new eyetoy games. watch this video, showing that microsoft is losing fans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZQA2zGihCs

19. Just got off Warhawk. Been on and off all day. But I don't get it...how come you have so much time to come here and troll if you've got so many exclusive AAA titles on your 360? Surely you would be playing at least ONE of them right now. Unless:

A) Your 360 is being operated on due to RRoD.

B) You don't HAVE a 360.

C) You don't have anything fun to play. :-(

In either case...I feel for you.

Really. I do.

So you only consider Heavenly Sword and Resistance as PS3's best, which is fine since that's your opinion. But I don't see your point that they could have been done on DVD-9, that's like me saying Gears of War could have been done on PS3 and have more content due to BD, its completely hypothetical.

@19
That was a pretty good song and was sang pretty well.

@22
I'm at college right now, so I only have enough time to browse through these forums as a study break when I'm stuck with long nights of homeworks and studying. But you better believe I'm getting Uncharted, Folkore, and Heavenly Sword (I need to limit myself to three since I have winter externship so I doubt I will have time to finish more than three games).

Anyways, I would like the ability to jump while firing, but realistically it doesn't quite work for games like these that tries to portray realism. I doubt the soldiers are carrying gears light enough for them to go more than two feet so I don't think you can expect to dodge by jumping like in CS and really fire accurately by jumping. It probably will just be used for terrain navigation.
