Remember early 2006? The PS3 was still in development, and people were curious about all the new things PS3 would bring to the gaming community. People were excited for the XMB navigation system, where they'd have access to all the features of the PS3 in one easy-to-understand menu.
Fast forward a few months and now we see restless fans waiting for in-game XMB access. People want to access the XMB's features without having to quit a game -- but wait! We're watching this IGN video from 2006 ... and it clearly shows the XMB being accessed! (Watch at around 2:30 in the video.)
What happened Sony? In-game XMB was the plan all along, but nearly a year after the console's launch, why is this feature still missing?
Rewind to 2006, when PS3 had in-game XMB (seriously)

5. i have been waiting for an in game XMB for a very long time and all along sony has had it. i thought they havent produced it yet and still working on it. maybe they're working on putting music in there or this could be again part of their master plan.

6. I guess it all came down to managing the memory, having the XMB run constantly would tax resources the game you are playing could use, in essence it was a good decision to hold it back until Sony could optimize the system OS.

7. I'll pretend to be a Sony PR person.
"We made a conscious decision not to allow XMB in game at launch. We have a plan for it in the future. This is all part of a very carefully thought out plan"

8. In-Game XMB serves no propose anyway aside from accessing you Friends list, i hope they put effort into useful features IN-GAME XMb in my opinion is totally USELESS!

10. If you think In-Game XMB is useless, you're an idiot Tim Parsons. I know this is a ps3 site, but have you ever used the 360s guide? It's incredibly useful to send messages, check messages, see what friends are playing, and invite friends into your game. And the bonus is that you don't have to quit out of your game to do it.

12. That's a debug, beta, test unit. I'm pretty sure the developers have that feature, the same way that they have custom soundtracks.

13. I think I game XMB depends on if dev's want to allow it. For example if devs are willing to save 40MB of ram for XMB access then it can be done. But they are already have trouble with the ram so this is unlikely. Until they can get the XMB running a 1MB then this will be impossible for some games.

16. @15: Are you serious? You can hit the XMB and look at a picture or check your friends list? I gotta dust off Resistance just to see.

18. Though yea their showing it here in this video dated back in 2006 (Last year).. That XMB in the video only had 4 Icon.. The one we have has twice as much and their IMO is were they have come into some problem..Also the whole "Home" thing.. Its like, why come out with a temporary interface.. When your going to have to come out with a totally whole new one in a couple of months.. Especially with the whole "Sony platform learning curve"..

19. Why the heck didn't they just put in more memory in the first place so that this isn't even a question? What an appalling oversight if you ask me. 256 MB of RAM with another 256 graphics memory don't make much of a future proof machine in my opinion. 1GB Minimum anyone?
