Unreal Engine issues cause Midway's PS3 delays; prompt release dates for '08 promised

Underneath the depths of a crater-sized hole left from their earlier Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 delay, Midway CEO David Zucker also made a rather bold statement about Midway's future Unreal Engine-based PS3 releases. Citing "technical issues of the Unreal Engine 3.0" as the main culprit for the PS3 delays of Stranglehold, Area 51: Blacksite and of course, Unreal Tournament 3, the conference call also included the assurances these technical issues have since been worked out, barring PS3 delays for future multiplatform releases in 2008 and beyond.

Hmmm ... color PS3 fans bemused and slightly suspicious. After all, we're still left with a lingering sting from the triple whammy PS3 backhand they've dished out. If anything is certain, it's that death, taxes and occasional game delays are all but inevitable but we just hope Midway can stick to their guns to make one of those things, a thing of the past. Imagine ... no taxes! [Insert lolz here.]

1. Is this a tech issuse or a hardware issue. Unreal works on everything else that is why the PC verison is coming out in NOV. Dreamcast 2008 the death of the PS3 but the PS2 still lives

2. 360 fanbots, when will they ever learn... Why don't you go play your short, generic and graphically unimpressive "trump card" game, Halo 3?

3. I think Midway is playing it safe and giving us the "soft" answer, while Epic is going off on it's own and talking about the real deal and how it's not a 2008 thing for sure yet.

Midway is just giving us the 2008 line JUST IN CASE it takes that long. My real concern right now is weather or not it's actually a UE3 thing, because Epic's statement makes it sound like UE3 is good to go and they are done with the PS3 version, but MIDWAY WANTS TO HOLD IT BACK until next year. Might have to do with some kind of business corporate crap. Might want to push one of their money makers into 2008 instead of leaving it in their 2007 year to get unnoticed.

4. How does 360 fans always seem to manage to get the first few posts? Weird.

I do hope UT3 comes out on time. The other two titles I haven't heard all that much rave about.

5. OK, whoever's *genuinely* surprised by this news speak up...

Posted at 12:58AM on Oct 3rd 2007 by marklar

6. LOL @2

You obviously haven't played H3... till then, shut it.

Honestly not surprised about this announcement. There has been speculation all over about Unreal Engine 3.0 having issues with the PS3 h/w. Glad to hear that they have the kinks worked out. I would rather wait for a quality title than to be hit with another Lair.

7. The Insomniac developers seem to have a handle on the PS3 hardware, why don't Epic or any other PS3 developers have a word with them as they seem quite keen to help other PS3 developers to make better PS3 games. Can't wait for Ratchet and Clank!

Also wasn't Sony supposed to be helping Epic iron out their PS3 issues?? I'm sure Phil Harrison said that at a previous game convention.

Damn is there a real reason any of us should of picked it up @ launch??? I mean besides a very few fun games, No AAA games, Promise's broke, lol But really I could of waited for the price drop, maybe then we'll have some games, So I can dust the Darn thing off & play it!!

10. AHHHH. This is gonna really screw up Sony's holiday season, the most important time of the year like ever. That and now what am I going to do over Christmas vacation. Assassin's Creed can only last me so long (assuming it's good, which I do).

11. Im not suprised. So much for the time exclusive UT 3. Another sony promise that wont be coming our way. Soo whats that leave for the holidays.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ratchet and Klank

lets see thats up against

Halo 3
Mass Effect

Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Not looking too good this year for sony. Bring on Metal Gear Solid 4 and God of War 3. Otherwise sony hasnt got anything....

#2: Atleast he has something thats good to play.

Resistance. beat it
Motorstorm. its a racer (good in small amounts)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Beat it when it was NGBlack (almost done with it now)
LAIR. Ive played warhawk so this is pretty unplayable now
Warhawk. Its good but it gets repedative
Heavenly Sword. Beat it.

regardless if hes an xbot or not, hes right UT3 is pc ready and march holds the 360 launch. if ps3 slips past that then its a given the hardware is too hard to program for.

12. 2008.

Damn thats gonna be a fine year. To be honest though, I lost interest when they said UT3 will have mouse support.

13. That's the real reason?

14. So basiclay what every body is saying that, this is the end?! come on!

i'm sorry but, it seems like every body wants Sony to throw in the towel this round! for what, so the 360 can get some love from the gaming world? and lets face it...the only reason the XBox is still around is because of the Halo franchise!

all day it's Sony is evil, Sony has lied to us( i remember MS saying that 1080 was needed for games, no body wants/needs HDMI ports, 20gb was plenty of HDD space, any my personal fav....we don't see a trend in the amount of hardware failures in the mass market) and Sony (fill whith what ever Crap you've seen on the net)! Sony decided to take chance on introducing new tech to the gameing world AGAIN! time after time it's the same thing. PS1, PS2, and now the PS3 , "it's to hard to program for!" and now you see games like God of War on the PS2! the 360 is useing the same tech as the PS2 (basicly with more power) so of course they can make the games look as good as it does in 1-2 yrs. (they have been using it for over 8)

i gave my 360 a lil over 1 1/2 yrs to show me what it can do! i will give my PS3 the same.

btw, i have Halo 2&3, Halo 3....good game, nothing special! some of the extras are top knoch!

17. "the only reason the XBox is still around is because of the Halo franchise!"

As an owner of a 360 and now a PS3... you are soooo wrong. The 360 has plenty of other awesome games (Bioshock, Crackdown, Tom Clancy games...) and multiplatform games DO look better on the 360 (although only slightly better... you actually have to LOOK for the differences).

The only reason I'm keeping the PS3 around is for the Blu-Ray playback, excellent DVD upconverting, and hope that one day either Sony or the linux gurus will allow us to play back divx, xvid, and Matroska 720P video files.

As a media center, the PS3 in it's current firmware incarnation SUCKS. It's no better than the 360 in the video codec department. Hey Sony... how about giving linux access to some video acceleration?!?

18. @Trev

Okay, we will be online with the average 500,000 other Halo 3 players in the single best FPS experience on any console..but only if you go fold@home.
