TGS07: Final Fantasy XIII trailer impressions

After adamantly insisting that you do not videotape or record the screening in any way or else, the Square Enix private theater showcased numerous titles from the ever-expanding Final Fantasy universe. The first trailer on display was the lead game in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, Final Fantasy XIII. In English, a narrator explains a corruption that seems to plaguing the land. "Those tainted by the outside were exiled," he explains.

Earlier trailers highlighted Lightning, but the trailer at TGS showed off a number of new characters, environments and creatures. A gunman that seems to have specific mastery over water shoots a crystal, creating a massive water summon. Paths of ice form in the sky, as he rides along on a motorcycle. Certainly, a spectacle to behold. Then a massive African-inspired scene provides a stark contrast to the futuristic environments we've seen of the game so far. Fantastic Mammoth-like beasts walk across a river in a scene that could've been ripped out of a Afrika gone slightly astray. Debuting in this new trailer was a brand new female character that stands, staring at a frozen planet orbiting in the sky. The trailer ends with a proud proclamation "PS3 Only," to silence any doubters.

Once again, we were stunned by the visuals of the trailer, which went beyond the quality of most Hollywood productions. The new dry landscape showcased provides reassurance that the game will not remain stagnant in its visual look. However, in spite of the incredible excitement generated by the trailer, we were surprised that a different game in the Square Enix theater stole the show.

2. PS3 Only Xboys. Now that it is 100% certain that FF13 is NOT coming to the 360, cue the 360 fanboys claiming that the FF series is crap and that they dont want it anyway.

6. No, no. Not FF VII, I'll have to stack up on bad food and lock the door for a month when it's released, I'll come out a bleak blinking badger when I've finished it again!

7. I'm so excited because that statement just screams FF7 remake to me. Nothing else could warrant such a tease. Then again, maybe I'm just making it out what I want it to be.

The silly thing, I don't even like FF7 that much, but the thought of a remake is ever so exciting. Silly me, I'll admit to blindly following the FF logo ;_;

8. Are you kidding me? FFVII remake? Console war is over, Sony wins! If this ends up being about Kingdom Hearts or something, I'll be pissed.

Posted at 11:45AM on Sep 20th 2007 by Akamaru

9. If it is a FF7 remake it will completely justify my purchase of a PS3 besides using it as a BluRay player.

10. Great can't wait for this game. Where the hell is the update on 2.0!

i'm a 360 owner and plan on getting a PS3 when this game comes out. play the games you want to play and not the systems. geez!

a FF 7 remake would be very sweet. i'll get that too.

14. oh, and to ease the minds of those fags saying Andrew Yoon is a 360 fanboy, wtf do you think of this post? clearly he's excited that FF XIII is coming out to the PS3. why would he be hired to write on a PS3fanboy site?

Posted at 11:55AM on Sep 20th 2007 by ryano

15. @11 that game has been announced for years. it is not a remake, it is a prequel

16. I heard from another forum that SE is supposed to show "end of crisis core ff7" or something like that.... That title might be it - the source was not sure whether it is another spinoff or remake though.

17. Man, you guys are mean. I just wanted to check the updates and then leave for lunch, but now I'm refreshing every 60 seconds. And of course, whatever it is, it's going to be a letdown now. Damn you anticipation, damn you.

19. @ 15 Oh well gamespot just layed down the hole story and there was no mention of a new VII Kingdom hearts stuff etc here ill give you the link;title;1

On a different note 12 while im with you these stupid fanboy wars are dumb its not gonna me ive tried. I currently own all consoles.....I say i am a GAMING fanboy which is a hell of allot more cooler then PS3 360 or wii fanboy. :p

20. From the Gamespot link:

"Next was a snippet of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, a new, expanded version of the popular computer-animated film. Quelle surprise, the film will be released on Blu-ray Disc, the PS3's proprietary format, later this year in Japan. No US release date was given for the movie."

That was probably it. Unless everyone was actually hard over Crises Core. Or a new portable KH. Or I could hope in vein that neither source was allowed to reveal the remake of VII.

Oh well, I'm assuming it is AC: Complete.
