Sony: I choose you, Limelight Networks!

If you've ever thought to yourself during a system software update: "geez, this is pretty slow for a small update. Why take so long, you Sony man?" then, first off, you've got to learn how to mentally line up a sentence. Second, you'll be pleased to hear that Sony recently adopted Limelight Networks' content delivery system to speed up our PS3 and PSP updates. It's not just going to make the delivery of the updates faster, but a lot more stable, too. For those with a PS3, you know that getting a system error halfway through an update is rather annoying.

Limelight describes their service as such from their press release: "Limelight's CDN is designed from the ground up to rapidly distribute rich media files, direct to the consumer, ensuring that SCE customers always have the best experience available with their PS3s and PSPs." We're sure that's just official speak for what we've already said -- faster and more stable downloads are coming our way. Sony, you did this because you love us, didn't you?

1. If it helps divert some of the money on the PSN from servers to developing/updating PSN content then i'm all for it.

PSN is embarassingly bad at the moment ¬_¬.

2. this should be great. Downloads are super slow most of the time. Took me like 6 to 8 hours to download a demo once and 30 min another time.

3. Downloads are always frustratingly slow for me... hopefully this will fix some of that.

4. Good, because when I was downloading the 1.92 update, it took a good 45 minutes just to git 50%.
Strangely slow for such a small firmware update.
Its usually much faster then that

5. I'm sorry but this is not great news. I don't trust Limelight due to their shady practices and massive amounts of lawsuits filed against them.

I'm a happy PS3 owner and would rather deal with the slower downloads then have Sony be in bed with this joke of a company.

6. When does this go into effect? I tried downloading the update tonight and it was taking forever.

7. I just returned home and am on a 100mbit line now, but downloading the update took longer than it did while I was in Japan (not that much longer, but 100mbit should be able to do much better). So I hope this new CDN will let me fully utilise my bandwidth, next time I have to update.

8. I never had a slow download, not when performing a system update nor when surfing the store.

But I have another question regarding PSN downloads:
Did the download queue get an additional 10 slots with firmware 1.92 or did this happen earlier, and I just didn't notice?

9. What about P2P? I mean, if you have millions of connected PS3's downloading the same content, then why not follow a torrent style to downloading content? The only difference is to not allow the leach mentality that plagues torrents by forcing anyone wanting to download PSN content to require to upload the content to the network, at least for a short period of time. Anyways, anything that can speed up the PSN downloads is welcomed and hopefully doesn't just apply to firmware updates.

10. It's about time Sony joined the ranks of Microsoft, Valve, and others who have been using Limelight for a long time.

11. Why take so long, you Sony man?" then, first off, you've got to learn how to mentally line up a sentence.

That didn't make a lick o' sense.

I have never had any errors or anything like that. I never have any problems with anything. Shit, I wish my ps3 was my computer... oh... gotta pick up that usb keyboard...

Still, I would love to see faster loads. Shooz, this network 'bout the slowest thing I seen since Gramma put cold molasses on ma waffles!

12. @John

I'm sorry, were you trying to be funny?...

Better not quit your day job.

That is of course if you even... HAVE ONE.

13. I'm just kidding John, you know I love you.
