Unreal Tournament 3 may possibly have more maps, thanks to Blu-ray

Much like how George Bluth Sr. was having a love affair with his ice cream sandwich, Mark Rein of Epic Games has admitted his feelings toward the new Blu-ray format. Don't worry, his feelings are positive and returned in full. Speaking about Unreal Tournament 3, Mark Rein talked of the advantage the PS3 version may have over the 360: "we may have fewer maps on the 360 version...Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom." Boo-yah, Blu-ray!

Rein wasn't quite finished there, however. He even thought ahead to Unreal Tournament 4, saying "If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make." We'd be very excited to see that, really! So there's even more proof that not only is Blu-ray a handy asset, but it'll give us all more stuff down the line.

1. Cool. Finally Blu-Ray gets the attention it deserves.

2. I think this is just the beginning. We are going to start to see more and more devs feeling cluastrophobia and going blu.

Though, from reading these boards, Xbox users won't really care about having to download the extra 40Gb since, according to them, BD is not needed this generation

3. As a 360 owner I am not ashamed to admit you're right about the whole DLC stuff. I wouldn't mind paying for the extra maps. But then again its a matter of how important MP is to each individual gamer and how many COME with the game already. If the 360 version has 20 maps and the ps3 has like say 22 I'm not gonna be pissed about it or feel like I'm lacking something crucial.

So no bluray is not need IMO. However I will admit that the next generation of consoles will all have the winning format's type of disc. Hopefully it will be HD DVD or something even better than bluray.

And Epic/Mark Rein can go to hell after the whole Gears on the PC thing...

I love how ps3fanboy is shameless plugging in bluray advertising in every week in any article that can be remotely connected to bluray though!

4. I have both systems, plan on getting the PS3 version since it looks like it is going to have more to offer for sure (user mods, key board mouse, more maps). Only one thing would force me to go with the 360 version instead : If this title does 720p only with no 1080i scaling.

5. ForceUnleashed, why so bitter ? Give but cant take ?

Posted at 10:31AM on Aug 15th 2007 by EDGE

6. Bitter? I'm just bitter about the Gears fiasco...other than that I'm fine.

Anyways later. This article just amused me. It just seems like sony and its fanboys are losing their minds going over things like PGR4 weather effects and now UT's maps in an attempt to justify their beloved high priced yet extremely low value machine.

Thats All. Back to Joystiq now.

7. The Title just as well may be "UT3 to feature no compression"

if you think that they cant fit all the maps on because of the technical limitations of a DVD9, the you also have to believe that Madden runs at 30fps on the PS3 because of the technical limitations of the PS3s GPU.

8. I'm wondering why Unreal Tournament III has been available for preorder on Amazon for the 360 and PC for quite some time, yet the PS3 version has yet to show up?

Posted at 10:53AM on Aug 15th 2007 by NerdVernacular

9. The quote from Mark Rein is:
"we may have fewer maps on the 360 version"

Yet the title to this article is
"will have more maps"

Do you see the distinction between the two, Nick?

You also haven't corrected your story about the Fatal Inertia demo being on PSN today. Do you just hate your job and could care less about accuracy?

Anyone notice there is way more news at the beginning of the week than the end.

13. ForceUnleashed you are an idiot and personally i think you need to grow up!! What gets me most about all this is when the 360 does something better than the ps3 you fanboys dont stop rubbing it it to the sony fanboys but when the ps3 does something better you can always rely on people like you to be there to put it down!! At the end of the day the 360 fanboys were wrong for sayin blu ray isnt needed, but now more and more developers want more space for the games because the dont think dvd9 is big enough!!! It amuses me that people like you cant admit that you were wrong and just realise that both machines have there advantages but instead you continue to try and justify the argument still!! As for you being pissed at mark rein because of the extras on gears on pc, if you had any knowledge, you would have known that gears on the pc runs on a more updated unreal engine therefore the extras will not run on the older engine on the 360! this has been stated by mark rein himself!!! So judging by your comments about gears on pc it seems to me that you never want the unreal engine to be improved so that we can all play better games?? you are an idiot pure and simple and just so you know before i get told the shit that i usually read like "he must be on sonys payroll" (LMAO this comment always makes me laugh) i only own a 360 and personally people like you make us 360 owners ashamed!! Just grow up!!!

On topic: i for one am glad to see sony finally get some recognition! i plan on buying a ps3 this christmas!!! i just can't wait to play haze and unreal this year aswel as killzone 2(which looks awsome) next year along with MGS4!!!

14. @ Travis -- fixed and fixed. Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

...Though I'd really appreciate if next time you left off the last sentence (if there is a next time). My priorities are not your business.

16. @Travis: Troll much?

Posted at 11:34AM on Aug 15th 2007 by gullum

17. @7

You Fail.

30fps is due to developers not creating an adequate port.

Posted at 11:41AM on Aug 15th 2007 by EDGE

18. wow this is great news!

Posted at 11:53AM on Aug 15th 2007 by Byron517

19. I just love it when people can be so one sided and never give credit when credit is due!! Look Sony made a sweet and dangerous move going with Blu-Ray and it's starting to pay off! Face it!! Blu-Ray is better for devs it doesn't limit them like DVD9's and now Microsoft is going to have to figure something out! I own both systems because I view myself as a GAMER not a fanboy! So you can go ahead and keep "troll'n" it actually entertains me!! LoL

Posted at 12:07PM on Aug 15th 2007 by Byron517

20. Wow, first off the guy wasnt trolling as you like to call it. There are more PS3 trolls over at Joystiq than 360 trolls here.
Congrats, you have BluRay. It has turned out so far, that it was worth the gamble and in the future it may be the thing to have. but every time an article is put on here, most of you start talking about the 360 before anyone even says anything. You dont want people to comment (who happen to be owners of both systems or just the 360) than it would help if you didnt start talking your own crap about the 360.

As for more and more developers wanting to have BluRay...where do you get that from? Because one or two game (that arent even out yet) say they couldnt have done this or that with out BluRay? How does that translate to developers want to use BluRay now? I dont see it being a proplem. Maybe down the road sure. But not now. The extra Gigs, which is way way more than devs need to make a game right now, will come useful in time. But we arent to that point yet where that is the case. Personally, I have been unhappy with my PS3 thus far. first year, i know but it seems the only thing going for it right now is potential BluRay talk. And a few games that will come out in the future that could turn out to be really good. Other than that there are no games out now that make people want to get this system. Most people that have it are die hard fan boys (despite that the 360 has been out and actually has a good line up and even more coming this fall- its proven itself to people despite the ROD issue which they have finally addressed). Other people either dont see why its worth spending money on for numerous reasons or maybe some do have it just because they have parents that buy them everything or they just like to spend their own money.

I am sure I will get more use out of my PS3 but right now, I dont. BluRay movies dont interest me that much and really the public majority dont see it as a must have right now. When the PS3 releases some games that arent disappointing then I will gladly play get them and use it. But right now, the games I want I have on the 360, as well as the games coming soon like Bioshock, Halo 3, and several others. And lastly, Sony has some work to do with its multi player. It will be a while before I buy any multi platform game, that includes multi player, for the PS3.
