Epic unsure of cross-platform play with Unreal Tournament 3

One of the main reasons why Epic decided to stick Unreal Tournament 3 exclusively on the PS3 until the end of the year (we think Sony meant fiscal year, so really, until the end of March) was because of Sony's willingness to allow modifications of the game via the PC build. They call these "mods" in the crazy land of hardcore gamers, or so we've heard. It's sort of a mystical place -- a place no one has ever truly been here in Consolevania. Even with the promise of having mods on the PS3 version of the game, Epic has not decided to allow cross-platform play yet.

Everything isn't dark and gloomy, though. Mark Rein of Epic gives us hope that they will probably consider it in the future: "We're not 100% sure that users want that feature but if we get time we'll play around with it and see how it works. In the mean time we plan to be able to serve the PS3 from PC servers so that should help us gets lots of great servers going." No word on any cross-platform play between the PS3 and 360, let alone the Games for Windows LIVE service. Just the PS3 and PC at this point. Would you guys like cross-platform play, since the PS3 version does, in fact, support keyboards and mice?

1. Cross platform play is a great idea. But I think you need to be VERY GOOD to beat someone that has a mouse and keyboard with a joy pad. I think the idea of using a PC to host games for the PS3 is also very cutting edge. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any comsole titles that have ever done this before.

My only dissapointment is that it really should have tome to the PC first. The first person shooter started there and will continue to be the best platform for it.

2. It needs to be a server rule, and something that can be turned off, so when a game/server is started you can check a box that says "Cross Platform Play?"

That way, when you want to just play against "your own kind" you could filter out the ones with CPP enabled in the server browser.

If they made it this way im sure you would see very little servers with CPP enabled, unless all of the PC people think that all PS3 owners will be using SIXAXIS and want to own them with KB/MAUS.

3. I really really liked the idea of a PC running the server software to be able to host PS3 games though. (Forget where I rad that) I used to host CSs servers, tons of them. If this is still in the works we would have ton and tons of large BW servers running for us PS3ers to play on. Even if it was PS3 only which I dont mind.

4. I was not really interested in this game and I am official gone because PS3 users can use a mouse and keyboard.

I already get my ass kicked by people on the sticks. If they can make it fair I might give it a second chance but probably not.

5. As-long as we're given the choice, I don't see the harm in-it. Those who want to play cross-platform can play cross-platform, and those who don't can play in servers that don't allow-it. I just hope the game detects which type of controls PS3 users are using, so PS3 players who use mouse and keyboard controls don't have the advantage,

6. Like number 1, cross platform play should be an option selectable in the options screen when you're making the server on the PS3 or the PC. That way, those who want it have it and those who don't want it can do without.
It would be a great feature for those who don't want to buy a super high end PC (~2000$) just to play UT3, instead they buy a PS3 (now 500$), a keyboard and mouse if they don't already have one, and they can play just like on PC, with PC players if they want to.

7. like OrganicShadow said, make it a server option, and please god, dont make "1 hit kill option" like in Resistance, thats what i hate about resistance online games, its 99% 1 hit kill games ;;

9. I would love to play against the 360 players so we could kick their asses and prove were better, do you guys know the release date for it on ps3?

Posted at 2:43PM on Jul 20th 2007 by Shay

10. @coplice

my thoughts exactly. If you ever startup a game don't make it one hit kill make it 200% damage. Its more realistic and still gives you a chance if you get hit.

I still prefer 100% damage but if you like one hit kills make it 200% please.

11. There's no way that Microsoft will allow Sony to have a game that can play cross platform between Live for Windows and PS3.

Posted at 3:16PM on Jul 20th 2007 by James

12. Also, for the record, the Shock Rifle team deathmatch one shot kill was the best original UT mode ever. Total. Mayhem.

Posted at 3:18PM on Jul 20th 2007 by James

13. I would like to see cross-platfom play ONLY if it doesn't affect the game. I do not want to have auto-aim for the PS3 users or slow the game down on PCs to accomodate PS3 users. It has to be fair for both sides. No nerfing of one version to accomodate the other.

14. Uh, UT3 is going to support mouse and keyboard on the PS3 anyway - they mentioned it ages ago.

No point having a cry about having your ass handed to you by a PC user even before you've looked at your own controller options.

I'm totally looking forward to it: Mouse, KB, 50" screen, big stereo. Suck it PC users!

15. Personally I think Epic should encourage kb/mouse use on the PS3, maybe even team up with Logitech or someone and throw a coupon in the box for $30 off some combo deal. OR they could have an option for 'disable whining' and have people go spend $20 on a combo and play an FPS like they're designed to be played. :)

Posted at 5:04PM on Jul 20th 2007 by Popfrogs

16. I'm so ready for this I don't know where to begin.

@14 Oh hell yeah.

@15 $30 off? You can get a wireless Logitech KB and M combo for $30-$40 already.

What I'm really looking for is a Playstation made or made specifically for the PS3 KB&M setup. Having those computer setups with a million useless buttons gets on my last nerve.

17. Maybe something like the Phantom lapboard would be good with this not sure if those actually exist yet or not but a interesting solution to keyboard and mouse play from the comfort of he couch.

18. Well this article isn't clear at all. I'm glad I read it someone where else. Anyways its yet to be decided if UT3 PS3 and PC players will actually be able to play eachother. Here is a quote below. I snagged it from G4TV blogs.

"UT3 does not use Games for Windows LIVE. We have not decided about cross platform play between PC and PS3. We're not 100% sure that users want that feature but if we get time we'll play around with it and see how it works. In the mean time we plan to be able to serve the PS3 from PC servers so that should help us gets lots of great servers going."

19. Ugh...Mark honey...

YES WE WANT THE FEATURE!!!!

That game would be...EPIC?

20. Your comments: did every1 forget the PS3 can use a mouse and keyboard 2. Soney claimed the ps3 to be a computer so thats what they are still aiming for by joining console and the pc gaming experience together on one console while MS seems to do the same thing but tries to make profit by making pc owners pay for cross platform gameplay via xLive
