David Reeves calls PS3 "tsunami", will win console war

A rather lofty quote from David Reeves to open this post: "PlayStation 3, you will see, will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March '08. They really, really will ... It's something that is going to be a slow burner, and suddenly it's like a tsunami; it will just overtake you." This quote goes hand-in-hand with the announcement of the new PS3 bundle package in Europe, which also tells us that the 60GB PS3 model isn't going to be available in the US anymore after July (price cut rendered useless).

Will the PS3 win this holiday season with their insane lineup of games that has the PS3 Fanboy staff crying at the abuse their wallets are going to get? We'd like to think so, but every console has some heavy hitters coming out, but by the end of the fiscal year, we do believe the PS3 will have created a much larger install base. Perhaps not enough to render Mr. Reeves' predictions true, but one that will show Sony has no intention of passing off their crown.

1. Man, I'm wondering how I'm going to pay my mortgage after Christmas, let alone finish my Masters. The "PS3 has no games" argument is about to get it in the ass, as well as the "PSN sucks" argument. It's gonna be a great time to be a PS3 owner. ALl of you trolling Xbots need to get on board. Its ok, no one will find out. ;) FIRST POST!!!...I think...

2. Hey Nick, SCEA turned down rumors of the 60GB issue that SCEE was speculating about.

3. @ Jason B.

They stated they have ample supplies which is true. However, According to Kas Harai himself they have discontinues production of the 60gb model for the US. Have a look around 1:50min into the video here: http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235

If I recall this is also the same thing they said about the 20gb model before they eliminated that one.

Back on topic: The PS3 will finally have some games to play other than the killer app [email protected] I just wish several of them were out already or spaced apart more than they are. At this point every game is competing for gamers to take the title home. Some of the 'Must-Have' titles are even launching on the same day as other 'Must-Have' titles. This holiday will be chaotic, but I agree that by March the PS3 will be in a much better situation. I don't think the PS3 will be ahead of its competitors at that point, but it will be in a better position to get there.

4. seems sony execs dont know that to say

kaz in an interview confirmed it
upon web reaction they are probably backpeddling

the article above also doesnt say anything about keeping it in production, just that there will be enough, which probably means all the unsold ones will be available for a while due to low demand

5. NOTE: The 60GB PS3 is not leaving, thus the price cut is not useless. http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/sony-says-60gb-is-not-over-in-us/

6. We'll see in the next two months where the truth lies. I'd like to think that Sony has learned from their mistakes, and that between the GDC and E3, we'd been shown what that would mean.
This guy however is making an ass of himself and the company as only Sony's head people seem to be able to do, and the price cut/discontinuation topic really hasn't been "closed" because of the prime example of execuspeak by Karraker leaving plenty of interpretation.

They were doing so well this last week, but basically the statements by this man and a couple of other utterances by the people in charge are going to leave a bad impression on everything that they were able to accomplish before this.

7. I thought Sony had a fighting chance until finding out about the bait and switch Sony pulled with the price cut... and now I am pretty sure the 360 will steamroll on forward and the PS3 will be marginalized for the remainder of this console generation.

I am NOT a 360 fanboy (I only own a PS3) and I am happy with my purchase... but if you think the PS3 is going to stomp the competition, you are fooling yourself.

Coming out of E3, Sony had great press on its side and finally a good list of games to be proud of... and with $100 cheaper system, things were looking good. But now any good press Sony had is going to be completely undone by this shifty *non* price drop they pulled (should have just been honest about it from the start) and you are kidding yourself if you think the PS3 has a better lineup of games than the 360 this holiday season.

And what happens when MS drops their price?

I just wish Sony could go a whole year without sabotage themselves...

8. A whole year? I'd be happy to see them go a whole month without sabotaging themselves.

Like @7 said, this is just going to once again taint the impression of Sony coming out of E3. I don't understand why Sony lets these guys stay in charge when they keep doing so much damage.

10. The web response has been overwhelming - just as Sony was hitting its stride and generating positive vibes for the first time in ages, they go and make a move that can't be seen as anything as anti-consumer. Oh and, uh, suicidal. If it's true, despite all the amazing games in the pipeline, you can call this 'console war' finished now, today.

The move is so boneheaded that, even though Kaz has confirmed it in an interview, I still find it hard to believe Sony are going to go through with this. I'd love to be corrected though.

As for Reeves, put duct tape over his mouth or just let him go. If the discontinuation of the 60GB is false and he doesn't get fired for this, then something is seriously wrong with Sony.

13. The PS3 is a great piece of hardware with an impressive line up of titles in the future (if they ever churn them out!!)... but too bad it's not marketed towards the general public. You can't make a statement like:

"PlayStation 3, you will see, will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March '08. They really, really will ... It's something that is going to be a slow burner, and suddenly it's like a tsunami; it will just overtake you."

if you're too overpriced for the general public. I don't care what you fanboys say about graphics, hardware, upcoming titles... $600 does not appeal to the average consumer. $500 doesn't even do that. Not to mention HD component cables, and an HD TV. You want to talk about visuals, then don't tell me you're going to settle for a standard television.

That's why Wii's are so hot. While I'm more hardcore and can't understand the appeal... Wii obviously hits the sweet spot in affordable entertainment among the masses... end of story. In the end the general public is not going to spend that kind of money if it isn't a hobbie of theirs. Handhelds are where the mass market is. No one goes out and spends $600 on a fishing rod if they only plan on fishing for a day. Wii has a strong market and all Microsoft needs is revisions in their hardware and a price cut to keep Sony in third. Sony is in no such position to make a reasonable price cut (under $300). These quotes are only wishful thinking at this point.

14. Tsunami's are dangerous.

Sony will do much better this holiday season because there will actually be consoles for people to buy and games to buy. Maybe not first place but close.

Posted at 5:41PM on Jul 13th 2007 by Andy

15. i agree with The Truth. in everything he says. i'd like to play Sony first party exclusives but $400 is my price limit for buying a console. i don't give a care about extra features.

give me games for a cheap price: thank you Wii, PS2, NDS, and Xbox 360. PS3: i'll see you in another life.

17. anyone realize that on 360 fanboy it's generally talk about certain games coming out, or the games already out, and on ps3fanboy they pile on articles reading "so and so feels the ps3 is going to win!"

.....sounds a little bit like buyers remorse for you all, and constant reassurance as to keep you from feeling like this horrible drought will last forever. (gba actually pwns the ps3 in console sales, OUCH)

Posted at 7:21PM on Jul 13th 2007 by Scutt Farkas

18. @15 Andy,

How are you and this clown at Sony so confident about PS3 doing better during the holidays? The 360 will more than likely be at a cheaper price than it is now. Halo 3 will be out and other great titles. Sony seemed to forget that games matter a whole lot. They are too busy worrying about competiting with he 360's Live arsonole. withThe PS3 besides the recent price cut, has not made any good headlines. They are far from their superior PS2 days and I guess they dont know how to handle it. If they would concentrate on games and get some good games out that the general public want to play, then they could get into this war much faster. Sony has lessons to learn, and until they get past the PS2 days when their was no competition, then they will be in for a long climb back toward the top. With their finally being some good competition, I think its being shown that the majority of Sony fans are die hard Sony fans due to RPG titles and MGS. Now that their is competition, the public has more choices and so far can see that other consoles are out with more to chose from. And so far, the 360 has looked and played much better and offers an excellent online service to not only play with millions around the world, but also offers Arcade titles, TV shows, movies, demos and more. I hate to sound like a fan boy because Im not, but be optimistic all you want, but Sony is sucking right now. And this clown, Reeves talking nonsense doesnt help.

19. @Scutt

The PS2 still out sales the 360. So what is your point? Most Ps2 owners have yet to upgrade to Xbox 360 or Ps3 so just wait on that.
