Konami may "take some steps" away from MGS4 exclusivity

Who knows, perhaps all this time, Konami was waiting for an excuse to make Metal Gear Solid 4 a multiplatform title. They think the price cut won't significantly increase sales of the PS3, which we feel differently about. This isn't coming from Kojima, who ultimately has control over the fate of Metal Gear Solid 4, but from Konami's North America and Europe boss, Kazumi Kitaue. He said "I don't expect a substantial impact... With USD 500, you can buy a personal computer." Oh, really? What would that computer be able to do? Word process and search the internet. S'about it.

This is the big quote people are jumping all over: "Since Metal Gear was born on the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps." What this means to us is exactly what we've predicted. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a timed exclusive if the game does not sell systems. We think it will, but we don't think it will be enough for Konami, so they'll release MGS4 on the 360 about a year later. Sucks for loyal Sony fans, but it's the most likely situation.

4. Well my conclusions
1. If the PS3 sells well, MGS4 stays
2. Even if it doesnt "we might have to take some steps" implies they havent started coding for 360 yet. So at the worst a timed exclusive, maybe one year, and a crappy 360 port with about 6 DVDs

And both hyped and nervous about Killzone - but funny thing is, Haze / Gears already look almost as good as that prerender. I expect wont look exactly as good as that trailer - but the physics and gameplay should be satisfying

5. ok heres the deal:

if it goes to 360, ps3 owners can still play it.

and MGS2 went to xbox1 and it completely flopped. It is so funny listening to people saying MGS4 going to 360 would be the final nail in the coffin, when no game was more hyped then MGS2 other then halo2 and maybe burning crusade, and yet that was ported to xbox and flopped. so stop thinkin its so shocking if the game goes to 360 because xbox has had MGS before, and it didnt kill PS2 because thats where it truely belonged and thats the only place it sold well.

i still dont think it will be ported to 360... MGS2 may have been but MGS3 wasnt, even when xbox was getting more popular.

6. mgs3 sold on the ps3 like 3.8millions copies you can expect more copies selled on the ps3 since right now theres no piracy form to lower the software sales so stop being gay konami have faith at least one if it dont sales well make it multi. but this game will sale its mgs4!! jesus

7. OMFG i hate Kojima... atleast Squenix has been nice about it... this guy is a backstabbing son-of-expletive i mean ya sure sony mad mistakes but they're correcting them and i know people will start buying the ps3 now $500 is a bargain for a blu-ray playing future proof console with a great line-up of games Xbots will drool about (i.e LittleBigPlanet Haze Killzone 2 and Heavenly Sword) whatever though if he wants to be a little money whore then let him be... i really wish ISO loaders are up by then cuz if this goes multi platform im not buying it same as DMC4

8. "This isn't coming from Kojima, who ultimately has control over the fate of Metal Gear Solid 4, but from Konami's North America and Europe boss, Kazumi Kitaue."

Most of the people over at Joystiq feel that Kojima does not have control over this. Can someone more knowledgeable correct some of those commenter's?

9. @ 7 leave kojima in peace its konami the one that wants to make it multi dont mess with kojima san

11. Aren't most games going either multi or timed? While the focus has been on PS3 losses, there have been many 360 games transferred to the PS3 (Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden, etc.)

I'd be surprised if MSG4 went multi unless they've secretly been working on it all this time. I wouldn't be surprised however, if it gets ported to a rival a la Oblivion.

12. "Metal Gear was born on the PlayStation."

I could have sworn I'd played in on the NES about ten years before Metal Gear Solid came out. Not that I care, it's just a very odd/false statement to make.

I guess Final Fantasy was born on the PlayStation too. The series just started at seven, and those other, lower numbered ones on the NES etc were just coincidentally named.

13. They are dumb to release it on 360 dam i'm mad what the hell

Posted at 1:26PM on Jul 10th 2007 by ekbigpimping

14. @5
When MGS2 came out there weren't nearly as many people who decided to buy and Xbox over a Playstation because it was cheaper had better online, and still got all the games Playstation did, along with exclusives that Playstation didn't. My point is new console battle so the old rules no longer apply.

15. @10 can you tell me where the debunking is? I still see the article on Yahoo.

17. Common sense bottom dollar mentality. Why wouldn't they want to make money on there long investment or recupe there costs. Unlike their customers, loyalty in business lasts as long as you can show a clear profit/benefit be it short term or long term. Fanboyism or not, those rules apply.

18. i think every ps3 owner will buy this game

Posted at 1:45PM on Jul 10th 2007 by Justin

19. @ 12

Metal Gear was born on MSX and later was ported to NES. Metal Gear Solid (very different, believe it or not) was born under the playstation brand.

Metal Gear was nothing like it is now and in many ways they owe it to Sony.

I don't have a problem with the game going multi... The main plattform is PS3 so it will be optimized for it, that is all I'm interested in.

20. The original post from reuters is still there.
