Only a small fraction of console gamers use video playback

Read the title again, then think about Blu-ray. The small fraction of people taking advantage of a console's video playback function? We're almost certain most of that market is centered on the PS3 crowd. We're driving the Blu-ray format home. The Diffusion Group, however, isn't looking at the PS3 alone, but the three next-gen consoles together. How much do people use video playback on those? Apparently, "80 percent of console owners have the option, only 30 percent realized it was part of its feature set, and only 13 percent actually utilize it." Chances are we are the bulk of that 13 percent.

We know that many parents who may buy game systems for their children are largely uneducated to the video game industry and all the functions available not only to their kids, but to themselves as well. Thus why people still have parts of their homes dubbed "dens" or "game rooms". The PS3 deserves front-and-center attention to a family's media center and these results reflect that many are not even aware of the awesomeness of Blu-ray movies. Or nobody watches DVDs on the 360 or the Wii ... well, the 360. Wii owners don't exactly have a choice.

2. I have to agree with #1. How do they get these statistics? Are they spying on us? Do consoles call home for statistics? I've always used my consoles for multi-media functionality and so has everyone I know. Though, they wouldn't know this seeing as they didn't poll me. You can add another .0000005% to the poll numbers for me.

3. i too agree with 1, i know a lot of people who use their 360 to connect to a remote windows media center to get all their multimedia fix.

4. see, I would LOVE to use the video playback. except I don't think my gf's Wii has that... or even music CD playback. *shrugs*

5. I showed my brother what it could do and he went out and bought one for the Blu-Ray and Media streaming capabilities alone... He's never been much of a gamer, but I did convince him to pick up a few games and now he's pissed that I got him hooked. :p

9. No nonsense. You need to remember fanboy editors are just that, “Editors” and bad ones lol. They get paid for write no nonsense pr crap. I use my console to watch movies. My ps3 works excellent as an BRHD movie player. So stop the crap and start writing interesting stuff.

10. Sony should promote the features of the ps3 to people that already own it. Put some tutorials on how to set up and use the wifi features for home network. Have a demo on the differences in picture and sound quality between sd and hd. Offer promations and discounts for BRD movies. If they did, it could really benefit them as well as their user base.

11. Are you guys kiddin me, about 97% of the use of my 360 is for watching my recorded television shows over extender, And the other 3% is for downloaded demos, I don't really play much with the 360 but I do use the extender every day.

My PS3 is the centerpiece of my Media in my living room, my parents made me paint the living room and put crown molding just so that the living room would be worthy of the PS3.

12. Personally, I bought my 60GB PS3 to ONLY use as a BD movie player. Sure, I bought a couple of bargain bin PS2 games, and have downloaded all the game demos on PSN. But I have not purchased a SINGLE retail PS3 game!

So, count me as one of the "weirdos" who actually bought the PS3 for BD movies.
