Japanese devs hop off the PS3 boat into the Wii wagon

The Los Angeles Times has posted a quote from Kyoshi Shin of the IGDA (International Game Developers Association) regarding developer interest in the PlayStation 3. It isn't good. While it isn't good, that doesn't mean it isn't true. In fact, the quote pretty much explains exactly what I'm thinking in food terms. Shin said: "When people talk about the PS3 on chat forums they say it's like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat." This is an obvious play on Kutaragi's previous quote about the PlayStation 3 being a fine restaurant.

The context of Shin's quote relates to developer interest -- namely, they're leaving the Sony restaurant and taking some drive-thru from Nintendo's Wii window (so to speak). If devs focus on the Wii, we've got a problem. Games will reverse engineer themselves to lesser graphics and scale. More minigames isn't the only issue to arise -- porting from the Wii would be nearly impossible due to the control scheme.

It's a waste of the PS3's power, too, as Kojima's quote from a long time ago will explain: "The PS3 is like the theatre, it's a little bit high-priced but it has to be high quality as well. The 360 is a DVD, it still needs to be high quality but you need more variations, while the Wii is almost like a TV channel, because every game you have it with your family." We need games that will take advantage of the PS3's power and Wii titles simply may not do that. If devs leave, there's no reason to buy a $600 console when most games are on a $250 one.

1. That just sucks. While we're at it lets go back to pagers instead of cell phones.. give up cars for a horse n buggy.. and so on.. The wii is fun and all but it ain't pushin no envelopes.. these devs will fell stuck in a rut and come back.. hopefully

2. So what you're saying is if the PS3 doesn't get the most games it inherently becomes a worthless system???

3. This is bad news for both PS3 and XBox360 fanboys.

I have a Wii. Once the novelty wore off I've barely used it. I'm not a 'retro gamer' and that's what the Wii feels like. Yeah the controls are unique (and unique doesn't always mean 'good') but the graphics are pretty bad.

I think these devs are going to regret these decisions. The Wii sells like crazy, yeah, but even Nintendo will tell you that a lot of those sales are to 'non gamers'. And non-gamers aren't going to drive software sales.

4. If Sony and MS dont get the support they need this gen they will even get less next gen
due to more development costs etc. Its kinda sad but what nintendo is doing is basically
introducing so many "casual gamers" that may eventually get rid of all the great games that
could've been made. Think about it, if Wii dominates and developers all hop on that
wagon then with the lower specs there probably wont be a "Gears of war", "MGS", GTA calibur
of games - at least those that the fans of those genre would want. Instead those games will
be watered down for the low bar the Wii set.

So basically with Wii's success hardcore gamers will get screwed over and will be flooded
with mediocre games so companies can make more money.

6. And so the video game landscape will look like the tv listings, with mindless crap dominating. Let's face it, the ps2's overall game spectrum wasn't exactly awesome. There were those great games that stood head and shoulders above, but there was even more crap floating down below that still sold to people who didn't know/care.
Right now I don't care if the ps3 leads since I know I'll get a 360 sometime in the next year, but I don't want the Wii's style of gaming to become the norm. Most of it's titles suck overall, with the first party stuff, as it always is with Nintendo, being about the only titles worth buying.

7. Nintendo seems to have Japan lock. 360, for now, is doing very well in the US. It's a good thing the PlayStation brand is so strong in Europe or it could be really really bad. It's still a toss up down under but at the price it is down there, something has to give. But this is bad news for both PS3 and 360.

9. well, money wise, because the power of wii is so weak, a lot of them 'weak games' are made/ported to/from the huge undeniable install base of ps2. (call me stupid but i picked up and enjoyed raving rabbids on ps2) sony wins either way as old ps2 users take their sweet time picking up ps3's because so many great games continue to rock the system. when sony finnaly gets around to releasing the lcd for ps2 slim expect sony to be the only ones dropping real competition in all territories even if it fails to dominate like last gen.

10. @yomanDS

You're a little late there buddy. Everyone is already here.

Now back to the topic at hand. All I say is wait until Sony drops a 1st-party game and it will all be alright. As soon as they release the new "Shadow of the Collossus" or the new "Legend of Dragoon", people will be all over it. Every Sony-made game have been unmatched so far. Or maybe wait for GT to show how great the graphics really can be like they did for the PS and PS2.

11. Tad slow, PS3 Fanboy? This very thing was brought up in an article you sourced days ago.

As for the remark itself, does anyone seem surprised? I'm not trying to be a dick, its a serious question.

12. Here is what I find amazing. The PS3 is obviously lagging behind its competitors but it's not really as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Consider that the system doesn't have a killer app (yet), no games that really show the power of the system; and yet they're still hanging in there and after showing up a year late to the party has managed to kick the crap out the 360 in Japan.

Obviously this is due mainly to branding but things can only get better from here.

Look at the GOOD things coming down the pipeline:

SingStar - The first and ONLY music download store for a game console enabling millions of armchair Simon Cowell's to comment on what is essentially a huge combo of American Idol and YouTube.
LittleBigPlanet - The first and ONLY game that offers easy to build levels that can be shared and rated by others. And with the game being so scalable you just know someone is going to dress up the 'sackboys' in Matrix trenchcoats and recreate scenes from the movie.
Home - the first and ONLY virtual online communal system on a game console offering matchmaking capabilities once only available to PC users. Sharing information, forming clans, and just messing about will be more interactive than anything Microsoft currently offers. As for the upcoming Mii's from Nintendo; graphically it can't even compete and with practically no games online there won't be much "follow me to Motorstorm" action going on.

I don't dismiss the fact that the PS3 has had a rough start (check that, a crappy start) but I faith that before the year is out people will be lining up (to buy and keep this time) to get a PS3. Especially if they lower the price. Moreover, if MS decides to release a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360. Xbox fans will be screaming bloody murder if that happens.

13. One last thing, Killzone is going to drop kick Halo 3. I've seen it and although it's still 6 months out I'm not impressed.

Looks like Halo 2 sprayed with Windex.

14. The novelty of the Wii will wear off... and quick... like another poster said, i barely touch mine now that ive had it for a few months.
One thing that i think alot of people just "dismiss" is the back library... a library that the xbox cant touch.. including LOADS of exclusive titles. This is my 1st playstation, and im having a blast.
I think thats something Sony needs to trumpet a bit more (especially since the slow development time for ps3 games, which i understand).
Devs are flocking to the wii for a few reasons:
$$$$- always the green. i cant say i blame them.
easy dev- how hard is it going to be to dev for a gamecube.5?
Quicker dev time- see above.

but once we get more killer games and apps (also mentioned in other posts) the excitement for the wii will be over and people will want those killer graphics. Sony is also doing a fine job with the system updates..new features seem to come every month or so. cant say the same for the wii. Im VERY happy with my PS3 purchase.

18. "If you're going to troll, you could at least attempt to do a decent job of it, and post something clever. You failed. Too bad."

That's good because it was never my intention to "troll". I simply wanted to point out how desperate some of the commentators are to defend the PS3. They make up some rather obscure arguments to why "if PS3 fails, videogames in general fail". I know I am not the first to use it but when it comes to stories like this the "sony defense force" line fits like a glove. I apoligize if I sounded a little antagonistic about the matter.

As I said in my first comment, even if MOST of the games go to wii it doesn't spell disaster for the PS3. The system will still have plenty of great games even if it doesn't live up to your insatiably high expectations.

19. I have been saying this for months now. I do not care if it is a "fun" party machine. If it continues in it's success, we as gamers are screwed. Why would Sony and Microsoft spend millions on developing new hardware when the FRACKING Plumber can put 7 YEAR old tecnology in a new box and call it next gen.

Frack Nintendo....AKA the Plumber
Frack the Nintenbots or as I like to say The Plumber Boys

Wake up people b4 it is too late.
DO NOT buy into the Plumbers crap...all you are paying $250 for is a GameCube with a motion sensing controller.
