The Last Remnant revealed - Details [UPDATE]

We knew this was coming, right? Ever since the announcement that our friends at Square Enix had registered a new game name, we've been waiting for information on this title to show itself. There's a fair bit of new information, so let's get started.

The game is due to be released simultaneously in the US and Japan and will be for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. At this point, the release date is still TBA. No mention of a European release, so we'll assume that it'll be up to twelve months after that, as usual. The backstory sounds fairly standard epic fantasy, but knowing Square Enix they'll put an interesting twist in there for us. An ancient race. Immeasurable power. You've heard it all before. A sword the size of a mountain at the heart of the town of Athlum? Alright, I've not seen that one before.

Similarly to Final Fantasy XII there will be numerous bizarre races living together in the world of The Last Remnant. The eponymous Remnants themselves will feature in the game as machines, beasts and weapons that vary in size. This title marks the first game Square Enix are developing using the Unreal Engine 3 which we noticed they licensed earlier this year.

No doubt we'll see some more information on this title coming out of the Square Enix party that's happening this month. Until then you can read the details in this month's issue of Game Informer.

[UPDATE] Siliconera has removed the transcript and apologise for abusing Game Informer's intellectual property and merit. If you want to read the full article, be sure to pick up a copy of the latest issue of Game Informer.

1. ok.

Enix talked about supporting xbox as well, so THIS better be it.

if FFXIII goes to xbox, I'm seriously going to be VERY Pissed.

I looked around, couldn't find any screenshots, am I missing something?

2. This sounds like a sequel to FFVII.
Why would you be pissed if a game goes out on both consoles? It's not like you won't have a chance to play it...

3. Ahah i'm still glad i got the ps3, i thought when SE said they'd be supporting the 360 i thought they'd make an exclusive game for them, but it turns out it will be on the ps3 as well mwuahahah!

It's all good for ps3 owners.

4. That article as well as the one from Game Informer was guessing as to what console(s) it will be on. It could be on both consoles, it could only be on the PS3 and it could be only on the 360, who knows.

5. I think SE is just "testing the waters" right now with these 360/ps3 games. If the 360 port get them very good sales they may release an exclusive for it (not sylpheed). All PS3 fanboys buy 2X FF13 so it will stay exclusive to us ! :)

6. >Why would you be pissed if a game goes out on both consoles?

because instead of focusing all the resources to one console, you have to divide your team up to work on both, and the end result is probably lesser version for both. xbox and PS3 are vastly different machine. Just something Take 2 is finding out now with GTA.

I see why this game would be in both xbox and PS3 tho, bevause it's more targeted to western audiences.

7. "Siliconera were kind enough to transcribe the full article from the latest issue of Game Informer. "

'Kind enough?' So ripping off intellectual property is a kindness now? I hope Game Informer's lawyers put that site out of business. I hate thieves. Apparently PS3 Fanboy is pro-piracy and theft now.

"Why would you be pissed if a game goes out on both consoles? It's not like you won't have a chance to play it..."

Because KoW is a rabid knee jerk fanboy.

@KoW

"if FFXIII goes to xbox, I'm seriously going to be VERY Pissed."

You'll also be eating a helluva lot of crow. Would you like me to link back to our comments about me stating there's a very good chance of this happening, and you disagreeing?

"because instead of focusing all the resources to one console, you have to divide your team up to work on both, and the end result is probably lesser version for both. xbox and PS3 are vastly different machine. Just something Take 2 is finding out now with GTA."

You mean like Ubisoft is finding out with Assasins Creed & Splinter Cell?

"I see why this game would be in both xbox and PS3 tho, bevause it's more targeted to western audiences."

Nice spin. I see it as more likely due to the fact that PS3 hasn't anywhere near the install base that the 360 has, nor are the month to month sales indicative of that situation changing. So, since Square is in business to make money, they decided to go where the money is, as have most devs, which translates support for the 360. Obviously they want the game to do well with that console, so they throw in a western style/evil character to aid in that goal.

9. To GRT...did you complain to Siliconera?

Posted at 11:07AM on May 8th 2007 by Colin

10. @Colin, I didn't complain to Siliconera but I emailed Game Informer's Publisher and Editor-in-Chief to make them aware of the situation.

11. @10 hal

Did you read the update where the translation was wrong?

12. The reason SE is going with the multiplatform release is because it's become extremely expensive to produce games. Releasing on just a single console they wouldn't get their money's worth nowadays. Especially when dealing with HD/Blu-Ray disks.
