The PS-Network reaches 1.3 million users!

Personally, we find 1.3 million registered users a strange number to start throwing all over the internet, but that's what's been going on so we may as well contribute. It's true -- 1.3 million users have subscribed to the PlayStation Network to-date. Approximately 600,000 of those are in the US. Among these users (the 1.3 million, not the 600,000), approximately 3.7 million things have been downloaded (no specifics, sadly).

For a newly formed system, that's not bad. Microsoft's XBox Live, which has been around since 2002, has an estimated 6 million users with over 135 million bits of downloaded content. Yep, Sony's got a ways to go to catch up, but if they've generated over a million users in 6 months, the number five years from now (using Microsoft's 2002 starting point, here) then who knows if that number will exceed the competition. It's good news, but it shows how Sony really does have a lot of work left to do and a lot of ground still to cover.

1. A really useful stat would be number of Live Subscribers versus 360 install base versus PSN subscribers over PS3 install base - however I don't think it's really possible to do this since Live works for the old Xbox as well. However, it would be interesting to see whether the fact that Live costs money actually hurts it in terms of percentage of subscribers for the console.

2. James- but older xbox owners don't have Xbox Gold subscriptions (though the difference is simply what console you're using & the functionality allowed as a result). Xbox silver users aren't paying users but have 360s as well.

3. I know quite a few people who make multiple accounts on their ps3, this number is grossly off.

4. It'll be nice to see what effect HOME and games like Warhawk that are very Network based have on those numbers

Posted at 4:14PM on Apr 23rd 2007 by DPR

5. Well, if you want the statistic, you can easily do a bit of math. Let's say, there were 24 million Xbox's and about 10 million 360s. So, out of a possible 34 million users, there are 6 million subscribers. So, about 18% of xbox/360 users are on Live.

Sony has about 3.5 million PS3s in the wild. With 1.3 million users registered, that is about 37% of PS3 users on PSN.

So, in terms of percentage, yes it hurts, but it doesn't give any perspective. One service is entirely free with microtransactions for certain downloads, while the other offers a free and pay account, both with microtransactions for certain downloads.

Also, the install base for the PS3 is entirely too small for the percentages to matter yet. It's currently less than a third of the 360s install base.

6. for been 6 month on the market, Not bad.

Posted at 4:28PM on Apr 23rd 2007 by crazyX

7. Except you can't go by that number Dolla Dolla, since I'm sure a large majority of Xbox owners bought 360's. I, for example, bought the original xbox years ago, then bought a 360. According to your math, I'm consider 2 people, not 1, which could skew the data alot. I'd estimate around 25-40% of original xbox owners have upgraded to 360 by now so...

10.5 million 360's
24 million xbox's

So we'll say

16.8 million xbox users (-30% from 360 ugpraders)
and 10.5 million 360 owners

Would bring it closer to like 22 %

Regardless, all these numbers are completely useless, since you can make multiple accounts on both systems.

8. That's great Scott, Now why don't you shut up and go play with 22% of your friends. Oh, sorry, I meant 100% of your friends... Or in other words 22% of the xbox populace that hates you.

thank you in advance.

9. I imagine the number will skyrocket once Home is released and patched.

10. I'd be willing to bet the number of users with multiple accounts for one person is the minority. Having said that, I have two myself, one so I can download stuff from the asian store and of course my US account, but then again I also have an xbox account and no xbox, so... more telling would be the number of PSN users with a master account.
All the same, it would sound like owners of the ps3 are more likely to have a PSN account than xbox owners are to have an xbox live account. It's interesting to me from a demographic standpoint; how many users from both choose not to have a free account vs not being able to have an account for whatever other reason (lack of internet, wifi, whatever)?

13. "Except you can't go by that number Dolla Dolla, since I'm sure a large majority of Xbox owners bought 360's."

Less than 1/2 of 360 owners owned the older xbox.

14. I didn't know i could download items off of the old xbox live on xbox1. So wouldn't that make this a one year deal, with the exception of the installed xbox live base that they already had?

Posted at 6:48PM on Apr 23rd 2007 by Brian

15. You can create multiple accounts on the PS3 which you can't do on the 360. So I wander how many of these accounts are created by the same person on the same PS3 box??? These figures are probably way off from the number of individual PS3 boxes on the PSN. More Sony FUD.

16. 13:
When my 360 was 6 months old, I was scraping for content too. After a year though, I was having trouble with filling my 20Gb HDD up and being forced to delete. Good thing the PS3 allows me to hook up my 200GB SATA drive. So when the content comes, I'll be ready.

17. @ Jon
You can create multiple accounts on the Xbox360 as well, you even get a free one month gold subscription for the first three you create. Just sign out your account and Join Xbox LIVE as a new member.

18. If someone such as myself wanted to get a 200 GB harddrive for my PS3, how can I transfer all my saves from my old 20 GB drive.

Posted at 9:08PM on Apr 23rd 2007 by massive_98

19. massive_98, there is a backup utility in the settings/system settings menu. Connect an external HD if you have much to backup, or just a smaller jump drive if you can fit it all on there. Install new hard drive, then use the same utility to restore you files.

20. Two things:

1. If you can indeed create multiple accounts on 360, just like PSN, then Microsoft definitely will count those twice as well (why not inflate the statistics for your benefit?)

2. Seeing that most multiple account PS3s do so to take advantage of the different regions, isn't each one a unique one anyways? That's why I have two - so I can download from Japan.
