Sony working on new 80GB PS3

Xbox 360 Elite is Microsoft's attempt at matching PLAYSTATION 3's impressive hardware features. While the Elite doesn't provide wi-fi support like the premium PS3, nor does it feature integrated HD disc support, it does offer a whopping 120GB of hard disk space, dwarfing the 60GB PS3 hard drive.

According to a recent FCC filing, it appears Sony is going to modify the current PS3 and include a larger 80GB hard drive: "The model CECHE01 to be added by the difference of the capacity of hard disk." Although this doesn't match the Elite's hard drive, it does add even more value to the $599 PS3. Current users need not feel short-changed, though. Unlike 360 users, PS3 owners are free to install almost any hard drive into their system, without having to pay ridiculous prices for proprietary peripherals ($180 for 120GB hard drive?!).

1. I was under the impression that the MS hard drives had some sort of protection on them, which made companies feel a hulluva lot safer releasing their movies for download rentals. If sony were to release movie downloads, how would they add protection? Nothing stopping you from downloading a movie to rent and yanking it out the drive to keep forever is there?

2. @scottyboy
I'd imagine that the protection for the files is in the files themselves, not the device they are loaded to. How do you think apple does it?

As for the 80gb, I hope the announcement for it includes a "at the same price as before" as a jab at MS's newest, more expensive, addition.

4. Cridit?

Pretty pathetic you come on here and beg for a thanks, it's a news website Colin, they woulda found it without you anyway.

5. @ Scott....

The POINT Scott is that PS3 Fanboy DOESN'T have to credit Engadget when they already had the story last night... PS3 Fanboy had the story FIRST.

And...so sorry, I'm sure you've never made a spelling error..Credit.

6. Why? I got the 60GB model, and even with all sorts of demos on it it was nowhere near full. Without the robust video downloading service available through XBL you really don't need a larger hard drive. Unless this is a precursor to that, in which case... why isn't the new drive bigger? It's a minor criticism, upgrades are upgrades, but it doesn't seem to have a lot of impact

I just hope this isn't in response to the new Xbox variant that's on it's way. It can basically be ignored because "$500 is too much for a console."

7. @Trev....

This is dated Mar 2 2007 so it isn't a 'response'.

I haven't found it yet but didn't a Sony bigwig say last year that PS3 drives would be updated annually? As well, the 20GB (besides not selling) is probably tougher to source than a 80GB at the same or close price wholesale. I forsee the 80GB replacing the 20GB and the 60GB (thus giving wireless to it at the same time) and just going with one sku or bumping the 60GB to an even larger size.

The download store is supposed to be coming so these larger capacities will dovetail.

Current owners...upgrade yourself...new purchasers won't need to.

8. Odd that they'd only bump it up to an 80gig. It's true, they're probably only doing it because 20 gigs are almost impossible to get. Heck, 60 gigs won't be easy to score after a while either.

It's worth noting that Sony uses Seagate hard drives, which are pretty much unanimously considered to be the best consumer drives available.

At some point it'd be cool (but extremely improbable) if Sony sold some of the units without HDDs at all, giving consumers the option of buying however large a drive they wanted.

9. You MIGHT care when, 10 years down the line, you can't buy an HD DVD player (not a fanboy assertion, it's just the most likely outcome right now) when your 360's drive stops working. You won't be able to play all your HD DVDs because players won't be on the market, and you'll have a bunch of coasters.

10. I though every PS3 was an "Elite" now Sony does this! GOOD GOD Sony now you once again look like your playing catchup, well to be honest Sony has been playing catchup since the 360 launched!

Seriously? you realize that you can stream things from the 360 to the CPU right? What's stopping you from streaming then burning content? I hope that the 360 never turns profit and M$ decided to just make software for the PS and Wii. Screw 3 systems. Have an "Elite" System, which is actually ELITE, and a kick a$$ party system like the Wii.

13. @ Rob

Huh, you do realize that 360 is already turning a profit right?

"You can stream from the 360 to the CPU..." Huh, ok.
