Oh, snap! Europe won't get their PS3 on until March 2007 [update 1]

Yes, you read the title right. Japan and North America still get their new Sony console this November, but the PAL territories won't. They have to wait until March of next year! What insanity is this? According to a Sony representative, "the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PlayStation 3" is to blame. Instead of a shortage this holiday season, half of the world simply won't be getting one. Don't be fooled, though. Sony intends to ship 2 million units by the end of this year, a far more reasonable effort than the prior 4 million. They're only planning a total of 500,000 units to get shipped when the launch date rolls around (remember -- the more money you put down on a preorder, the higher you go on the list come launch day!).

This could spell trouble for Sony. Analysts are already dropping Sony's chances for market success and lowering their expectations. Alternately, it may be for the better, at least for the US and Japan. More people in those two territories will be able to get their hands on the machine and in turn will educate Europe, Australasia, Russia, the Middle East, and Africa. If the system is amazingly amazing, those other territories will be more inclined to buy. If it doesn't fare well in the US and Japan, it probably won't fare any better in those areas. Was it wise for Sony to drop the PAL territories for now? Or should they have gone ahead and given extreme shortages to each territory?

[Update: added the 500,000 launch quota and some good advice for us fanboys]

1. Hmm... I'm happy to wait the extra time for a machine that's already had its creases ironed out. But will this meean we then have to wait til winter 07 for a price drop?!

2. Bad news in general, but a decision that had to be made. Sony doesn't want to give 360 two holiday seasons in the US. They are no real threat in Japan so the US gets more units. Just more bad news....Sony really has to Razzle n' Dazzle us at TGS (Killzone living up to the hype) or they will have a MAJOR uphill battle for the heart, wallets, and minds of gamers!

4. Right... no one is mentioning this then?

Will you be happy to wait in lines for only 400k units? Ouch. Well then again... maybe that won't be so bad. With no one else buying them, they'll be plenty to go around for the few that cough up the money.

5. Thats the spirit Tom!! Sony can do no wrong!! Why not delay it even longer? That way its sure to get more bugs out (although the PS3 might be considered OLD TECH by then). Price drop in 07? Ha! I'm thinkin 2009.

11. Sony has lost plot in europe overpriced and no stock till march they should have got rid of blue ray discs very hard to make laser diodes difficult to make gone with HD DVD it will win not mpg2 mpg4 much better picture much better codec they are all going to kill of any chance in europe I know a lot of very upset gamers Im ordering a Wii to go with 360 I will wait a couple of years till PS3 drops in price and they improve production quality and they get all bugs out of cell processor and graphic card i hear they have had to drop speed allready and a few reports that they are haveing to upscale 720p to 1080p to get it to work.

12. ..

The playstation is doomed. A prodect can only get so much negative press before the consumers don't buy it. I personally think that this line has been crossed.

13. The PS3 will rule and people will be selling it on EBY for $2000 +!

If they can get 2 million shipped by end of year 2006, they will be ok. That is more than what was shipped for the XBOX 360 by end of 2005.

Remember there will only be about 100k XBOX HD-DVD external drives because of the shortage....Nobody know what the Wii shipments will be....

14. I think that the blogger should update this article as Sony then stated they would only be releasing 400,000 consoles in North America and 100,000 in Japan for a shipped total of 2 million by the end of year. It's stated on Joystiq so I don't see why not here, the article at the mo just gives false information (though it was correct at tome of print)

15. Cage - yeah, I do want to buy a PS3 at some point. What, should I be somewhere else? Price and availability don't change the fact that it's going to be a good games console.

16. This bad publicity is just too much now!!!

When are Sony PR going to start putting some positive spin on all this??? Now, I don't mean the obvious lies that they have been spewing lately!

Check these Sony claims out:

* 120 frames per second gameplay - Yeah Right. So why is Resistance only doing 30fps?

* 2 HDMI sockets - Really? Erm, The low-cost version doesn't even have none!

* 7 Controller ports - Some dumbos actually believed this.

* 4D Gameplay - enough said

* Renders of Games passed as in-game graphics. Warhawk, Motorstorm etc.

* Their @revolutionary" controller from 11 years ago WITH NO Rumble

* Oh, they also lied to us that the rumble was removed Because it interfered with the motion sensors - Sony will read the NEWS and know of a certain lawsuit, you know? Don't insult our intelligence!

* Spring 06 Launch - Liars, Liars Pants on fire!!! They haven't even starter production as of September!!!

* Emotion engine?, anyone? The only emotion I had was from the Disc not read error!

Sony has lost it's credibility as far the PS3 is concerned.

Good Luck Sony!!!

17. @ 14
Umm.... they never said 7 controller ports, they said the PS3 could support 7 of it's wireless controllers at a time. This is a fact available widely online. Couple that with your grammar and spelling errors and I'd say your credibility is in more trouble than Sony's.

18. This is great! Karma is a B!tch huh Sony? This is payback for all those broken PS2 systems that you A-holes wanted people to pay you to fix. Yes I remember it all still. I hope that Sony bites it BIG this time around. Suckers!!!

Posted at 4:26PM on Sep 6th 2006 by EX-PS Fanboy 0 stars

19. @15 look 4get about his gramatical errors, he does make a very good point there, and apart from the 7-controller ports which was indeed wrong, everything else he said was right. With that said, how can u say that his credibility is in more trouble than Sony's.

20. Does the PS3 even have anymore Fanboys?

Blunder after blunder after blunder. Everyone that has waited out on next gen gaming (360) for the much anticipated arrival of the PS3 has been left Jaded and burned. And it only gets worse folks

...when the PS3 drops and most of the Games suck or are not very notable...and folks look across the isle to the Wii and 360 titles and price points...there will be no more PS3 Fanboys left save those pearing from behind a rock with their sad little eyes.
