Kutaragi hints at external power supply

Ken Kutaragi talked with a Japanese website recently about most of the things you've probably been wondering. He spoke about keeping costs down, heating issues, the Cell and even hinted at including an external power supply for the PlayStation 3.

For starters, he said that reducing the size of the Cell in the future will allow for lower costs (as we've heard already). But he also said that power consumption will be key: "If we can't reduce [power consumption] we will never be able to make the PS3 cheap and small." Well then, for the love of all that's economical, please manage that consumption!

When talking about heating more extensively, he said that "the power supply could almost be sold separately." So if they decide to go with that, expect a power brick, except of even bigger proportions than what you're used to (like the 360's). With a console the size of the PlayStation 3, it's going to need all the juice it can get.

1. LOL...the old "you must include the power supply to the size of the 360" cant be used anymore. This thing will be gigantic! Its starting to remind me of Frankenstein!

2. Power supply sold separately? choose your words carefully, Kenny...

This is starting to sound like a £425 PS3 will buy me nothing but the console. I'd have thought by now that a power pack would come standard with consoles by now, especially if they're $600

3. No, no, no.
He is not hinting that the power supply will be sold sperately you fools! He was emphasizing the fact that there is so much heat removal technology in the power supply, jokingly saying "it could almost be sold seperately".

4. "LOL...the old "you must include the power supply to the size of the 360" cant be used anymore."

It can't be used anymore? Damn! So who sets the rules here? Oh damn! I had a whole rant prepared for this! Be sure to tell us the rules earlier next time, Cage!

Wasnt this one of the points that you tried to use? Slowly your selling points are going away. Kutaragi even said the future is in downloading games. Your theory on BD disks seems to be going away too. I dont consider myself a fanboy. Its just that whatever Sony gives you (before the console is released), you believe and use as fact. Open your eyes and see that this is not a mythical console...

6. I'll just build my own PS3 with a 480W ATX power supply. That should do the trick.

Liquid cooling, anyone?

7. What happened to all the fanbois who complained about the size of the Xbox and the 360?! The PS3 is an effin' hog...dwarfing your little sister and her My Little Pony collection...

8. I seem to remember the ENTIRE universe of Sony Fanboys saying "we have an internal PSU! we have an internal PSU! eeeeeeeeee!" or something like that.

When will people realize that what Sony says and what Sony delivers are two different things. I actually feel bad for Sony Fanboys b/c their company is always lying to them and crushing their fanboy dreams...

...come to the (ring of) light young padawan...

Think before you post. How is a power supply a selling point? Read what you read before you post it. Seriously...

Anyway, he never said that full games would be required. Besides, it's retarded to think that this generation, online distribution will be key. Just look at the measly 13 GB on the 360 HDD. It can't even fit a single layered HD-DVD lol!
