Rumor: New PS3 model coming next month

Click for full-resolution image.

It looks like it's time to the PS3 SKU dance again. An alleged Wal-Mart spreadsheet sent to Joystiq states the 40GB PS3 "will be replaced with [a] new model in early August." What this new model will entail is unclear: it could be a new 40GB bundle, or it could be something different altogether. Perhaps we'll find out more at E3?

This isn't the first time hints of a new system were revealed through retail channels. The 40GB model is currently the cheapest model of the PS3, retailing for $399. It is the only model of the PS3 that does not feature any backwards compatibility support for PS2 titles.

Free $100 gift card with PS3 purchase at Walmart.com

Super-ultra-mega-retailer Wal-Mart has an enticing offer for those that haven't jumped on the PS3 bandwagon (we're looking at you, Mr. "I'm an Xbox fanboy, but for some reason I comment exclusively on PS3 Fanboy"). The 40GB PS3 system is available with a special bonus: a $100 gift card that can be used for future purchases at the store. If you pick up in-store, shipping is free, but having it mailed to your front door will cost $10. An extra hundred bucks to spend will net you a few games and movies -- we think that's a pretty sweet deal.

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and Logitech wheel for $100

If you're one of the people who wanted to get the Blu-ray version of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, we've got a special deal for you today, courtesy of Wal*Mart. Not only can you get the game, but you can get it bundled with the Logitech Driving Force Pro steering wheel thingamajig for a little under $100. Very little under $100. Still, taking the two separately and then comparing this bundle, it's a good deal and necessary for those racing game enthusiasts. Get on it!

World's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, going Blu-ray

The pieces are falling into place. It shouldn't be too long before Toshiba and the rest of the HD DVD group call it quits (check out the latest rumor). Especially with this piece of news: the world's largest public corporation, Wal-Mart, is planning on becoming a Blu-ray exclusive distributor. This comes just a few days after a similar announcement from video rental service Netflix.

According to Check Out (an official Wal-Mart blog), "by June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard def movies, DVD players, and up convert players. Not sure of the short term pricing plans, but history tells us that as more people move to a new technology prices typically go down."

This news should come as a relief to those following the format war. We're relieved as well, because it means that we're one step closer to not having to write anymore format war news again in the future. Can't wait until we have the headline: "it's really over, folks."

[Thanks, Brian!]

Deal of the Day: Stranglehold CE for $40

Even though Wal*Mart just had a snafu with their pricing on a couple of other games, it seems they're still giving the green light to some pretty impressive deals. The PS3 version of Stranglehold -- the Collector's Edition, no less -- is on sale for $39.82. If you haven't played the game, this is a good chance to get it on the cheap as well as the Blu-ray of Hard Boiled. So, take advantage of it while you can. Or don't. It's your choice because we all know the heart of Wal*Mart is the consumer -- you.

Wal-Mart offers gift card as apology for pre-order fiasco

What? Haze for $30? Smash Bros Brawl for $20? Really?

The internet went ablaze when it was discovered some suspiciously low prices for various pre-orders on Wal-Mart's website. We predicted that the conglomerate would cancel the orders ... and they did. We didn't predict that they'd give a $10 gift card to all users affected by the ordeal. "We apologize for our recent video game pricing error and the incorrect information included in our follow up e-mail correspondence with you. As we are always striving to provide a positive customer experience, we will be sending you a $10 electronic Gift Card toward a future purchase as an apology for your recent experience."

Well, well played Walmart. We knew we wouldn't get the deal, but we appreciate your efforts to please the masses.

Wal-Mart price glitch may get you Haze and Singstar for $30

An interesting slew of price glitches have hit Wal-Mart. The world's largest retailer has pre-orders for two upcoming PS3 games for half their expect MSRP:
We believe that it is unlikely Wal-Mart will honor these orders. "While Walmart.com strives to provide accurate product and pricing information, pricing or typographical errors may occur ... In the event that an item is listed at an incorrect price or with incorrect information due to an error in pricing or product information, Walmart.com shall have the right, at our sole discretion, to refuse or cancel any orders placed for that item." However, guess it couldn't hurt, right? And while you're there, you can pre-order Smash Bros on Wii for only $20.

Wal-Mart busts out some obsessed PS3 ads

Who doesn't love Wal-Mart? A lot of people, apparently, but their influence in most things consumer-related is undeniable despite your personal beliefs. This is why we took note of their latest advertisements for the PlayStation 3. They're obsessed. We've got one video above for Heavenly Sword and we've got three more waiting for you after the jump. We know the heart of Wal-Mart is in us all, but by the power of Grayskull, we just can't pass up those deals.

Two more PS3 console deals [Update]

In the mood to buy a PS3? Well, you might want to do it today. Wal-Mart has a not-so-secret sale today, where they're offering a free $50 gift card to anyone that purchases a PS3 today. For those of you that have been waiting to buy a PS3 for the holidays, this is a great incentive to go out and get one.

Update: amazon.com is also selling a 40GB PS3 bundle, which includes a Blu-ray remote control and Stranglehold: Collector's Edition for free.

Alabama Wal-Mart breaks 40GB street date

The question if retail outlets would receive shipments of the 40GB PS3 around Oct. 28 has been answered. Yes they did, and Wal-Mart has gone so far as put the darn thing on the shelf! A sharp-eyed PS3 Fanboy recently spotted the goof at a Wal-Mart in Birmingham, Ala., which is about three days ahead of the 40GB's officially scheduled Nov. 2 launch.

We're sure we'll hear more stories of retailers jumping the gun in the next few days, and while we're sure it doesn't make Sony a happy camper, it's definitely a win for us.

[Thanks for the tip, H. Phillips!]

Wal-Mart Canada moving to new, lower 80GB price

Wal-Mart Canada is having an "Anniversary Sale" and one of the more notable sale items is the 80GB PS3 bundle. DailyTech is reporting that the 80GB system is dropping to $550 CAD, which is the same as the current price of the 60GB. According to the report, many Wal-Mart stores are already out of their 60GB inventory, and only have 80GB systems left to sell.

Another price drop would fall in line with analyst expectations. With 60GB PS3s available only while supplies last, it'll be interesting to see what Sony will offer in its stead.

[Thanks, Ruibing!]
