Rumor: New PS3 model coming next month
This isn't the first time hints of a new system were revealed through retail channels. The 40GB model is currently the cheapest model of the PS3, retailing for $399. It is the only model of the PS3 that does not feature any backwards compatibility support for PS2 titles.
Free $100 gift card with PS3 purchase at Walmart.com
Super-ultra-mega-retailer Wal-Mart has an enticing offer for those that haven't jumped on the PS3 bandwagon (we're looking at you, Mr. "I'm an Xbox fanboy, but for some reason I comment exclusively on PS3 Fanboy"). The 40GB PS3 system is available with a special bonus: a $100 gift card that can be used for future purchases at the store. If you pick up in-store, shipping is free, but having it mailed to your front door will cost $10. An extra hundred bucks to spend will net you a few games and movies -- we think that's a pretty sweet deal.[Thanks, Alan!]
Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and Logitech wheel for $100

World's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, going Blu-ray
According to Check Out (an official Wal-Mart blog), "by June Wal-Mart will only be carrying Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, and of course standard def movies, DVD players, and up convert players. Not sure of the short term pricing plans, but history tells us that as more people move to a new technology prices typically go down."
This news should come as a relief to those following the format war. We're relieved as well, because it means that we're one step closer to not having to write anymore format war news again in the future. Can't wait until we have the headline: "it's really over, folks."
[Thanks, Brian!]
Deal of the Day: Stranglehold CE for $40

Wal-Mart offers gift card as apology for pre-order fiasco
What? Haze for $30? Smash Bros Brawl for $20? Really? The internet went ablaze when it was discovered some suspiciously low prices for various pre-orders on Wal-Mart's website. We predicted that the conglomerate would cancel the orders ... and they did. We didn't predict that they'd give a $10 gift card to all users affected by the ordeal. "We apologize for our recent video game pricing error and the incorrect information included in our follow up e-mail correspondence with you. As we are always striving to provide a positive customer experience, we will be sending you a $10 electronic Gift Card toward a future purchase as an apology for your recent experience."
Well, well played Walmart. We knew we wouldn't get the deal, but we appreciate your efforts to please the masses.
Wal-Mart price glitch may get you Haze and Singstar for $30

We believe that it is unlikely Wal-Mart will honor these orders. "While Walmart.com strives to provide accurate product and pricing information, pricing or typographical errors may occur ... In the event that an item is listed at an incorrect price or with incorrect information due to an error in pricing or product information, Walmart.com shall have the right, at our sole discretion, to refuse or cancel any orders placed for that item." However, guess it couldn't hurt, right? And while you're there, you can pre-order Smash Bros on Wii for only $20.

Alabama Wal-Mart breaks 40GB street date
We're sure we'll hear more stories of retailers jumping the gun in the next few days, and while we're sure it doesn't make Sony a happy camper, it's definitely a win for us.
[Thanks for the tip, H. Phillips!]
Wal-Mart Canada moving to new, lower 80GB price
Wal-Mart Canada is having an "Anniversary Sale" and one of the more notable sale items is the 80GB PS3 bundle. DailyTech is reporting that the 80GB system is dropping to $550 CAD, which is the same as the current price of the 60GB. According to the report, many Wal-Mart stores are already out of their 60GB inventory, and only have 80GB systems left to sell.
Another price drop would fall in line with analyst expectations. With 60GB PS3s available only while supplies last, it'll be interesting to see what Sony will offer in its stead.
[Thanks, Ruibing!]
