Infinity Ward pegged to develop Call of Duty 6

These game announcements come earlier and earlier, don't they? No sooner had Call of Duty 4 come out than we started hearing rumblings of Call of Duty 5. Now, that game isn't even out and we're hearing word that Call of Duty 6 is already being planned. But Treyarch won't be at the helm, it'll be Infinity Ward working their magic. That's literally all we know about the game.

We're not sure whether Infinity Ward and Treyarch will keep alternating year-on-year, or whether Activision has so little faith in Treyarch that they're hedging their bets for 2009. The least we're hoping is that COD6 won't be set during World War II. Though it still boggles our mind that we're already talking about the game, when its predecessor hasn't even been released.

Call of Duty: World at War out Nov. 11

Developer Treyarch has been hard at work getting ready to churn out the next Call of Duty game, and though this new title is quite a contrast to last year's CoD4 -- which took the series to modern times -- diehard fans of series can appreciate the return-to-roots WWII setting. Answering the call to arms in CoD5 Call of Duty: World at War is only a stone throw away as the game will hit retailers this November 11 for the PlayStation 3 and alongside other platforms.

Call of Duty 5: World at War -- screenshots and four-player co-op detailed

This morning Activision announced a number of details regarding the latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise. Call of Duty: World at War will allow players to live vicariously as both the side of the US against the Japanese and the Russians against the Germans. The most anticipated feature, however, is the four-player co-op mode. On the PS3 (and Xbox 360) version, players can choose between a multiplayer four-player split-screen offline co-op mode or a four-player online co-op mode. Finally, there is experience points to be earned in both online modes, with a difficulty level that "will scale dynamically to provide a deeper level of challenge," so how challenging it will be depends on the experience level of the player and the player's comrades.

[Update: There is a four-player offline co-op mode and the wording has been changed to clarify this.]

Call of Duty: World at War trailer debut

Please don't mind the Games for Windows and Xbox 360 logo at the end of this video. Rest assured, Call of Duty: World at War will be making its way to the PS3. For one rea$on or another, the debut trailer for World at War was featured exclusively on the Xbox Live Marketplace. It looks like Treyarch is using a similar (if not the same) engine used by Infinity Ward for Call of Duty 4. However, will Treyarch be able to match the success of one of the best games of last year?

New Spidey game looks mighty impressive

Back in April, we were treated to some teaser footage revealing a new Spider-Man game called Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. Since then, there hasn't been much to report on and things have been awfully quiet. We've been wondering: when would we ever see more of the game? The answer would be today.

In this new clip, we see some of the guys from developer Shaba Games talk about how they're redefining the Spider-Man games franchise. The biggest improvement revealed so far is the revamped combat system which seems to look like a seamless and smooth experience merging regular combat and versatile webslinging. The ability to switch between red and black spidey suits sounds like a good way to mix gameplay up even more.

While this new footage has tingeld our spidey senses, we're still excited to see more. But, when will that be? We're not exactly sure as it's been months since the last time we heard from this title. The next reveal will probably be again mired in another "web of shadows" until then. Oooh, mysterious.

Call of Duty: World at War goes back to World War II

Those that had their hesitations about the upcoming Call of Duty may have their fears confirmed by this month's OXM (UK) magazine. The magazine reveals Call of Duty: World at War, which is developed by CoD3 vets Treyarch ... and once again takes place in WWII.

The critically acclaimed Call of Duty 4 was developed by Infinity Ward, and took place in the present day. The dark story and compelling multiplayer made it one of the best offerings of last year (and PS3 Fanboy's Game of the Year). Treyarch plans on "explor[ing] the darkest corners of WWII," by "tackling darker themes" and pitting players against a "new, seemingly alien fighting force." (The Chimera, perhaps?)

Confirmed: Call of Duty 3 a launch title

Hot on the heels of the recent videos and screenshots for Call of Duty 3 comes news that the game will be available on launch day for the PS3. I'll give that a second to sink in...

OK, done? Good. So, in being available on November 17, 2006, Call of Duty 3 might be able to push sales in much the same way that Call of Duty 2 did for Satan's Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. Regardless, Call of Duty has been just about the only WWII shooter worth playing for quite some time, so hopefully this turns out to be a big plus for Sony and their PS3 console come release this November.

Call of Duty 3 trailers and screens

IGN has posted a few different trailers showing the new Close Quarters Combat feature as well as some extra gameplay footage for Call of Duty 3. With the new Close Combat feature, you can do more than just bash a Nazi or two, allowing you to disarm traps such as mines, even going so far as to plant your own. Also, the game is to incorporate more destructible environments, causing the days of wood being able to block grenades without so much as denting to become a thing of the past.

Considering that Treyarch, who was responsible for Call of Duty: Finest Hour and Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, which were a bit less enjoyable than the original Call of Duty and its expansion pack in United Offensive, along with the sequel on the PC, should we expect Call of Duty 3 to have the same problems as their past efforts on consoles? We sure hope not as the Call of Duty franchise has been the only enjoyable WWII shooter for quite some time.
