THQ announces WWE Legends of WrestleMania

Not much was revealed about WWE Legends of WreslteMania, a new wrestling title to hit next year. All that's known so far about the game is that it's being made by THQ and JAKKS Pacific, and that it will come out March 2009 to coincide with Wrestlemania 25.

Other than that, everything is up for speculation -- especially that coveted roster. If the game's title wasn't enough of a hint, it looks like stars who've appeared at Wrestlemania will be the only ones making it into the game. Please THQ, whatever you do, don't include the likes of Tyson and non-wrestler personalities that have been at the big WM. That will just be disappointing. And, the "Macho Man" better not be missing this time.

Saints Row 2 gets August 26 release, website launched

Listen up son, Saints Row 2 is set for an August 26 release in North America. That's not bad timing actually; once gamers finish this April's GTA IV, they won't have to wait long before getting down to another crime-centric game.

What we're wondering, however, is if this title will actually click with PS3 gamers. The original Saints Row was never released on the PS3; this is the debut for the series on our shiny console. Interested, not interested? While you ponder that, you can check out the official website that just launched.

WWE Smackdown! vs. Raw 2009 announced, first details revealed

THQ's WWE Smackdown! vs. Raw series has, for the longest time, been underwhelming in terms of offering unique experiences between its annual releases. We could even say the series has been suffering from a mild case of Madden syndrome. With the announcement of this year's iteration: Smackdown! vs. Raw 2009, however, things finally look like they're going to change.

First and foremost, the series is finally getting the much needed online gameplay and DLC support that fans have been clamoring for in the past years. Unfortunately, specific details on the DLC are still being kept secret. Senior creative manager Cory Ledesma does hint, however, at the possibility of updating the WWE roster via DLC. As for the second major addition, say hello to the brand new "Create-A-Finisher." This tool allows players to create unique ultimate signature moves by piecing together over 500 animations. Also, a re-vamped career mode makes its debut, now allowing for the first time a co-op season with stronger emphasis on tag team action.

As for the roster, so far only Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, Randy Orton, Mr. Kennedy, Undertaker, and John Cena have been revealed. A final number for the roster has not been announced.

THQ reveals Baja, its answer to Motorstorm 2

Baja (pronounced "badger," we hope) is a multiplatform off-road racing game from THQ which, no doubt, seeks to show MotorStorm 2 a thing or two about the genre. Will it succeed? We haven't a clue, but the above video doesn't excite us much. IGN have a long interview with the developers, which you might like to check out if you're interested in more details.

Baja seems to be a recreation of the "Baja 1000" - a real life off-road endurance race. How that will translate into a game is anybody's guess. Any off-road racing fans excited by this? Or is MotorStorm 2 all you need for this year?

Red Faction III named, announced, detailed

According to Shack News, THQ has today officially announced Red Faction III which will be released under the title Red Faction: Guerilla. The news of a Red Faction sequel was let slip quite recently when it was mentioned during a THQ conference call to investors. Times have changed since the last incarnation of the Red Faction series was on the PS2 in 2003 and the gameplay of Guerilla, as a result, will be very different to the previous games.

Set on Mars, Guerilla will feature an open-world and the game will be controlled from a Third-Person perspective. That's right, it's another Grand Theft Auto clone - but this one is set on Mars! It will also "expand the signature destruction elements of the series", so expect plenty of next-gen environment destruction. Expect the game to be released sometime during THQ's financial year of 2009 (which begins April 2008). We look forward to seeing more.

Red Faction III headed to PS3

An overdue second sequel to the ahead-of-its-time Red Faction has been mentioned during a recent investor-focused conference call. THQ's CEO, Brian Farrell, explicitly stated that Red Faction III is in development for the PS3 by THQ's Volition Studios, the same developers who produced the first two games. The series has been on hiatus since Red Faction II was released in 2003.

The two first games utilised "Geo Mod" technology to allow players to damage the environment in realtime - something that's almost taken for granted nowadays but that was revolutionary back in 2001. We have great memories of creating cubby-holes and sniper points deep in the walls and waiting for an unsuspecting opponent to saunter past. Needless to say, we're psyched that Red Faction III is in development, despite the lack of any real details or even an official announcement.

THQ officially announces Frontlines cancellation

First, there were murmurs. Then, there were rumors. Now, it has become truth. Today, publisher THQ has confirmed the PS3 version of Frontlines has been canceled, making it a late in the game Xbox 360 console exclusive. "In October, we announced certain product quality initiatives, including personnel and structural changes in product development and a more rigorous internal and external product evaluation and feedback process," said Brian Farrell, president and CEO of THQ. "Consistent with these initiatives, we have taken actions to strengthen our pipeline and position ourselves to compete aggressively with compelling, high quality games." Apparently, that means getting rid of PS3 games.

Kaos Studios also responded on their forums. "THQ has made the decision to cancel the PS3 version of Frontlines. We looked at a number of ways to keep this version of the game alive but in the end, we just couldn't make it happen ... I'm sorry I couldn't give you an update until now but until the final decision and announcement was made by THQ, there was nothing official to say. We did try and find a way to work things out but, at least for this version of Frontlines, it wasn't possible."

Looks like today's not a very good news day for PS3 FPS fans, huh?

New Red Faction game announced

Last February, THQ offhandedly mentioned that their Red Faction series is one of the six franchises they were working on. Today, during their quarterly earning reports, the head of THQ officially announced the development of a new Red Faction title. No additional details were announced, but considering that the previous two Red Faction titles were on the PS2, it's reasonable to assume that the PS3 will be getting another dose of geo-deformation Total Recall-esque fun. We'll have more information as soon as we get it!

Stuntman: Ignition screenshots wheel in, following dramatic explosions

THQ is releasing another Stuntman game? Yes, yes they are. While the latest iteration has been in the dark for a few weeks, we've finally stumbled across some new screenshots over at CVG. These sure are some crazy stunts. If you're unfamiliar with how these games work, you're hired as a stuntman for Hollywood and your mission is to pull off the most intense stunts in all of Hollywood cinema. Some of these can be incredibly difficult.

This latest game has 6 films, 25 vehicles, and 36 stunts to get through. There's even online to challenge other people to the most insane stunts. You can even create your own stunt runs and let other people over the internet try them out. While the game seems to be running you through the same ol' hoops, it should still be pretty fun, especially when presented in gorgeous, next-gen high-def glory.

Saint's Row has been cancelled - also, Saint's Row 2 announced!

The PlayStation 3 port of Saint's Row has been officially cancelled after disappearing from the radar some time ago. THQ announced that all the resources dedicated to the port have been moved to Saint's Row 2, which will come out on the PlayStation 3 as well as the Xbox 360 in 2008. The original Saint's Row came out in 2006 on the Xbox 360 to positive reviews and has gone onto sell an impressive 1.4 million copies.

The cancellation will surely upset some people, but I'd rather have a fully developed and polished sequel than a port of a 9 month old game myself. It will give THQ more time to familiarize themselves with the complex architecture of the PS3 and tweak the gameplay of the series. The game was pretty good, but had some technical and gameplay issues (jaw-droppingly dumb storyline aside) that I hope they fix in the sequel.

THQ and Big Huge Games start making Small Tiny Games

The two companies, THQ and Big Huge Games, have entered into an agreement to start working on an RPG for the PC, PS3 and 360. The bad news? We're not going to know squat until near its release in 2009. There's no name for it, no details on what kind of RPG it is... nothing. All we got is "2009".

However, Big Huge did score an RPG guru named Ken Rolston. This guy has worked on a number of pen & paper role-playing games as well as the Elder Scrolls titles. Rolston said this about his new job: "[I'm] flabbergasted by the talent, craft and boundless energy of the Big Huge Games team. In such splendid company, I'm privileged to embark on a bold pilgrimage to create a refreshingly original RPG experience." Well, we know a refreshingly original RPG experience is due out in 2009. Hopefully people will know how to port a PS3 title then. We'll give you details as they get penned.

THQ says "games are awesome" and other trite things

Oh, THQ. Whatever dost thou stand for? Thy acronym is't clear to decipher, nay, nary a soul can'st bear to think of it. Perhaps Totally High Quality? Or could it be... Try Homemade Quilts? Whatever the case, THQ has come out and announced its thoughts on the console war and where it stands -- where they're making the most games, who they think will win, and the market segments for each.

First up, THQ doesn't plan to make a game across every platform. Going forward, they'll be making different games for different gamers. Wii games will stay there and PS3/360 titles will probably still shake hands. THQ can't recall the last time three consoles co-existed so well and they're not complaining. They don't know who's going to grab the biggest market share, but they don't really mind, either.

So far, THQ is more aggressive on the Wii -- marketing titles for the younger, or more casual gamers with titles from Nickelodeon, Pixar, whatever. They've got some games under wraps for now, but there are more. They insist that in the number of games, the Wii has the most from them, but in terms of revenue, the split is even between the markets of casual and core. Oh, they don't care whether or not the PS3 or 360 comes out on top. To them, they appeal to the same market. Disagree? I do. But not so much that I'm going to nag.

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 first screens

THQ recently announced their latest entry into the never-ending realm of man v. man dramatic fighting known as wrestling. This one, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, is set to release on practically every console known to man, but we've got a good handful of screenshots for you to enjoy.

Speaking of wrestling, which of the "fighting" style games do you find most enjoyable? Are you the wrestling nut? If so, what... ah... subgenre of wrestling is your pie? Prefer boxing? Or are you the classic martial arts fighter, finding the most joy in tossing out a hadoken (forgive the spelling if incorrect) and slamming your opponent with a shoryuken (again, sorry)? We asked how people felt about different racing game styles, so now we're asking you, the battling enthusiasts!

THQ capitalizes on in-game ads, $5 million-ish

This is just an expectation from THQ, but it seems more than likely. They expect over $5 million in revenues from in-game ads as well as downloadable content by 2008. More and more games are relying on the promise of delivering downloadable content in the future, thanks to the utilization of the internet by consoles. This is also good because, well, if a game gets released but isn't "finished" in the developers eyes, the costs are easier to swallow by cashing in one small, almost micro, transactions over the next year or so.

You'll recall that THQ also recently discussed the return of many of their existing franchises for the next-gen consoles. GamesIndustry also mentions this fact: "THQ's titles for next-gen machines include sequels to Red Faction, Juiced and Stuntman, as well as further exploitation of THQ's Destroy All Humans, MX and Saints Row franchises." Hopefully none of them will take place in the future and have presently existing ads in them. Unless they're on half-exploded billboards or corroded structures from the "distant past". Ads. Good for developers, annoying for gamers. Sort of... if you notice them. Although we'd gladly face off against the Fanta Girls in a boss battle, Metal Gear Solid style!

Saints Row PS3 bound, for real-reals

The open-world XBox 360 title Saints Row was super-duper officially confirmed to be headed towards the PS3 this spring. There's going to be online support mimicking that of the 360 version as well as a few more exclusive goodies. Rumored to be included in the PS3 edition are new cars, costumes, multiplayer maps and... well... they're just rumors, so we don't really know. But those are always nice things to tack on!

Says Kelly Flock of THQ, "Bringing the open-world genre to the PlayStation 3 system for the first time will help grow the Saints Row fan base and expand the open-world online community." We sure hope so! If we can play against the XBox crowd, we should make two warring gangs: the XBots and the Sons of Sony. How fun would that be?
