Skate 2 demo arrives on PlayStation Store next week

EA's Skate 2 will be arriving on the PlayStation Store next week. Strange, considering the demo is available on Xbox Live this week. Maybe EA is playing console favorites again? (PSN has been home to demos of Lord of the Rings Conquest, The Simpsons Game and others earlier than on Xbox Live.) Regardless of the one week delay, PS3 fans can expect a lot to do in the demo, especially as it includes access to two online "Party Play" modes: Thrasher's Hall of Meat and Spot Battle.

Skate 2 lands a January release date

Remember not to spend all your money during Black Friday -- a good number of games are scheduled to release in the first part of 2009. Skate 2, EA's follow-up to 2007's innovative skateboarding game, is making a return to the PS3 on January 21st (23rd in Europe).

There are a couple of big new features in Skate 2, like the ability to get off one's board and traverse to areas previous inaccessible. Skaters can grab objects and set up new, crazy lines down their favorite routes. In addition, an online graphics creator gives you the ability to add your own custom textures to your boards. Pre-order the game to get access to the "Throwback Pack," a collection of retro accessories and clothing.

Skate 2's lead platform will be the PS3

Unhappy with the quality of Skate for the PS3? The producers apparently felt the same way -- developer Black Box has stated Skate 2's lead platform will be the PS3 -- this is due to the inferior version of Skate PS3 owners received when the Xbox 360 was the lead platform. For Skate 2, producer Jason DeLong and his team are aiming for the following: "The goal is that if you put both versions side-by-side, you will not be able to tell the difference."

Are Scott Steinberg's words from back in July coming true? Hopefully more third-party developers will choose the PS3 as the lead platform from now on to ensure both versions are on par with one another.

Skate 2 interview talks about keeping skateboarding games realistic

If you played the first Skate title, you're probably familiar with how they attempted to switch up the control scheme that was standard in most skateboarding games. You used the analog sticks to pull off tricks -- it worked fairly well. It wasn't a blockbuster or a perfect title, but it did what it set out to do and now it's planning to do it again. This time, it might correct all the little flaws and become that great title. That said, this interview explains how Skate 2 plans to keep the skateboarding as realistic as possible, along with some footage. It's nice.

SKATE 2 in development for PS3 and 360, says EA

It might not be the biggest splash in this lake of information, but for those who played Electronic Arts' first SKATE title, you should be glad to know another game is on its way. This isn't to be confused with the next game in the franchise that's coming out only on the Wii, dubbed SKATE it, where you use a balance board to ... well ... skate. As for the true sequel, no further information on the game, its release date, or suggested retail price are known right now. But it's in the works, so we'll keep you updated as information arrives.

Deal of the Day: skate for $40

Forget Tony Hawk. EA delivered a brand new boarding experience through their innovative skate. With a fascinating new control scheme, skate wanted players to feel what "real" skateboarding is like. With a huge emphasis on community and video editing, skate delivered far more than any recent Tony Hawk title. Why not try the demo on the PSN Store to get a feel for the game yourself?

amazon.com is currently selling the PS3 version of skate for $40. We think that's a pretty good bargain for one of our favorite sports games from last year. If you're still on the fence, why not read some reviews?

Worldwide PS3 releases for the week of October 7

Happy Folklore week! Sure, Japan has had it for a couple of months now but since then we've been waiting patiently for the localisation process to be completed. This week our waiting pays off. But Folklore isn't the only big hitter to be released this week. Here's the full release list:

US Games European Games
Asian Games
Not a bad haul. We're really pleased to see that Folklore is being released in the same week in Europe and America. We're also happy to see Skate finally get its PS3 release over in Europe. As for Asia, we're intrigued to see how well Lair (named Rise From Lair over there) sells, considering its critical acclaim.

Don't forget, if there's a game on the list that looks interesting to you then feel free to order it, regardless of territory. Your PS3 loves games from other regions. Release dates are subject to constant change, so make sure you check with your local store before venturing out of the house.

Worldwide PS3 releases for the week of September 24th

Whoosh! That's the sound of games literally flying off the production lines and onto shelves. Today's release list is possibly the best yet. Remember when we were having weeks like these? Thank goodness those are over. Here's the full release list:

US Games
EU Games
Asian Games
This week at least one high profile game being released in each territory. We're intrigued to see how Oblivion and Warhawk will do over there here in Japan. All of these games are subject to the constant change in whim of the Game Fates, so don't start moaning if any last-minute delays occur. It's not our fault.

If you see something on that list that you like the look of, but it's not in your region, then don't fret. Simply import the game and play it on your region free PS3. Simple. Which titles will you be picking up?

Why no skate demo?

Waiting for a demo on the PlayStation Store is like waiting for a bus. You know it's bound to come, but only vaguely know what time it should probably get there. The demo for skate seemed to hit a few more red lights than other demos -- a demo has been available on a certain other system for a week and we expected a demo for the PS3 this week. No dice! So, what gives? Patrick Seybold explains: "contrary to popular reports, I believe that the Skate demo was just officially submitted to us for test last week. Its obvious that many of you want it, and we'll do our best to get it up there as soon as we can. Hold tight."

We know it takes a little while to make sure a demo is solid enough to slap up on the PS Store, so holding tight is really our only option. It's kind of funny, though. EA claimed to have sent this demo several weeks ago for approval, but Sony says they only got it last week. EA has done very little to merit our trust, but why would they give one platform a demo faster than another? Conspiracy theorists, assemble! The rest of us, wait until this Thursday and we'll probably have the skate demo at last.

Skate keeps performing tricks, keeps people smiling

It's time for another progress report on EA's upcoming title skate. Utilizing the two analog sticks to perform more "realistic" tricks, the game has garnered a lot of press for possibly being the game to dethrone Tony Hawk's reign of terror! We exaggerate, of course, but the game itself is on the right track to do just that. After you start the game, you'll be asked to participate in a "game" of S.K.A.T.E. which plays like the basketball game of H.O.R.S.E. -- one guys pulls off a trick, the other person must repeat the same trick. No scores; just ability. That's cool.

Unlike the Tony Hawk games, the streets aren't riddled with ramps or arbitrary railings. It's a city, so there are benches and stairs and all that, along with some curved building structures. If you want ramps and such, head off to one of the designated skating parks. Or be more imaginative with your surroundings. There are multiple contests and tournaments to enter all across the city, so there's plenty of chances to pull out your best moves on different scenic grounds. We're looking forward to hearing more about this game!

EA's skate looks pretty darn polished and extreme

We're not scared to admit it -- we've got a pretty biased attitude against Electronic Arts. They aren't the best at making quality titles ... they're more of the Kroger brand soda to Sony or Epic or Konami's name-brand colas. However, things may be turning around. First, Burnout Paradise seems to be built from the ground up on Sony's system and it's looking sharp. Then comes skate. This game looks excellent and the level of polish is impressive. We're not fond of "totally xtreem sportz" titles, but this one really makes us want to reconsider. Interesting dual-analog gameplay mechanics and a more skating-sim style make us squirm with anticipation. Check out the video. We like it!

Skate soundtrack announced, more impressive than expected

"Oh, no," we thought, "another skating game soundtrack. Bring on the O.C.-inspired punk bands or washed out bands from yester-year." We were wrong to assume such a thing! The band lineup for upcoming title skate does have a few staples of the industry, but they go beyond the normal bounds and acquire some songs that we wouldn't mind bobbing our heads to as we pull off some basic tricks.

The song listing is pretty diverse, from David Bowie to Slayer. There are the generics, like Sex Pistols or Nirvana, others like White Stripes or ZZ Top, and more. The songs aren't the biggest hits from the bands, but to have a selection that varied is a lot of fun! Feel free to check out the full listing if you're very curious and let us know if skate will truly dethrone that long-standing king, Tony Hawk.

Want a new way to skate?

Tony Hawk, your days are so numbered! Actually, it would be more appropriate if we were to say "arcade-style skating games, your days of off-the-wall tricks are numbered!" See, the upcoming PS3 and 360 title skate isn't like Tony Hawk games and others in that it plays more like a skating simulation. Gran Turismo for the X-Games, so to speak. For those instantly turned off by the mention of a sim, don't worry. Black Box is still approaching skate like a video game, so they'll let you have quite a bit of fun. We'll tell you how.

  • The dual-analog control scheme is innovative and a huge draw for those trying to find something new in their skating titles.
  • Create your own skater isn't limited to five standard skins, but a completely unique character for every player. skate sports 40 brands of apparel, so mixing and matching your dress is just the start. Roll up the sleeves, perhaps roll up one pant leg, tilt that hat sideways ... it's possible.
  • Skateboard physics are paramount -- choosing between soft and hard wheels greatly affects your performance. Along with altering your trucks (tighter or a bit more on the loose side) is a good idea when taking on specific challenges. Sounds intense? It is.
  • No stats, no set tricks, nothing locked away. The experience depends solely on your ability to perform tricks using the unique control scheme and manipulating the physics to your advantage.
  • There's no hokey-pokey story to play through -- more like the Quest Mode in Virtua Fighter 5, with an open world like Grand Theft Auto. Gain clout by owning skating arenas, win competitions and just create your own story. Wanna be an underground legend, or a magazine-cover mogel? Your choice.

It sounds like a very ambitious project and we're extremely interested to see how it pans out. But we want to know what you guys think -- will taking a more realistic approach to a mostly arcade-inspired genre breathe new life into it? We'd like to imagine so.

A new skate trailer just for you... and me... and everyone!

I grew up in the Orange County explosion -- the music, the totally "Xtreem" sports... all of that. It didn't stick, really. Maybe because I was a few thousand miles away, maybe because I was too young to have all the angst that The Offspring howled about, but now I'm starting to see how fantastic it all was. And is. And will be. All because of this skate video. No caps, because capital letters are not extreme and need to be done away with. I'm exaggerating, of course.

Anyway, the video as posted on IGN is a few days old, but it's a highlight reel of skate gameplay. Hopefully this will unseat Tony Hawk from his console-skating throne. Now we've just got to find a way to stop Tom Clancy from owning the rights to history to re-write as he sees fit. Monopolist pig. Oink! Anyone else love caffeine as much as me?
