Stringer of Sony: game profits are on top of our list

The Chairman of the Sony Corp., Howard Stringer, stated today at a shareholder meeting in Tokyo that their top management priority is "to restore profitability in our television and game businesses." This comes after Sony's game division predicted profit for for the first time in three years, due to reduced cost of producing the PS3 and broadened game software lineup. Sony's game division has lost over 3.4 billion dollars the past two years under his leadership, so it isn't surprising profits in that area are in Stringer's (and obviously, Sony's) best interest.

Stringer also feels that "we are not No.1 in my mind yet," and with the Wii projected to sell 25 million units this fiscal year while the PS3 is predicted to sell 10 million, we can see why Stringer would feel such a sentiment.

Third time's the charm? PS3 outsells Wii for the third time

The PlayStation 3 has outsold the Nintendo Wii worldwide for the third time ever for the week of June 7th to June 14th, according to VGChartz. This is the seventh time the PS3 was able to outsell the Wii in the US while in Japan this was the third time. This victory is likely due to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, an incredible deal on the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, and the Walmart deal that included a $100 gift card with the purchase of any PS3. Those of you who were very lucky were able to combine the aforementioned deals. Naysayers like to attribute the Wii shortage in the US for the PS3's triumph, but this time around the numbers are worldwide.

Is the third time the charm? Will this usher in an era of PS3 dominance? What do you guys think?

[Thanks, Trevor!]

Metal Gear Solid 4 outsells every other game in Japan 2:1

No surprise here -- the behemoth that is Metal Gear Solid 4 has obliterated the competition in the Japanese charts. It managed to sell over 12 times the amount of the runner-up, Mario Kart Wii. But wait, there's more! MGS4 alone outsold every other game on the chart combined by more than 2 to 1. An impressive feat, no doubt. Last week's winner, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit on the PS3, dropped down to 7th place with 18,000 copies sold. With two (!) PS3 games in the top 10 and two PSP games as well, Sony must be rather pleased by their sales in Japan.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) - 465,000
2. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 38,000
3. Wii Fit (Wii) - 37,000
4. Powerful Pro Portable Baseball 3 (PSP) - 27,000
5. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (PSP) - 26,000
6. Hisshou Pachinko Kouryaku (DS) - 22,000
7. Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit (PS3) - 18,000
8. DS Calligraphy Training (DS) - 17,000
9. DS Misa Yamamura Suspense (DS) - 17,000
10. Furai No Syren 3 (Wii) - 14,000

MGS4 is best-selling PS3 game in Japan, boosts hardware sales

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Metal Gear Solid 4 is a system-seller. The PS3 exclusive has managed to beat sales records in Japan, becoming the best-selling PS3 game in the territory. (The previous record was held by Minna no Golf 5.) MGS4 sold 476,334 copies in four days. That's slightly less than the Japanese launch of Metal Gear Solid 3, but more than the launches of MGS and MGS2. Considering PS3's smaller install base, this is a fantastic achievement.

Hardware sales have jumped to over 77k in the region, an impressive feat when one considers the sluggish sales of PS3 in the region (averaging under 10k per week). This is certainly a time of celebration for Konami and Sony, and should alleviate fears that a PS3 exclusive can't be incredibly successful. However, only time will tell how long MGS4 will be a system seller.

PS3 exclusives sell 45% better than multiplatform releases

PS3 fanboys don't like to share, it seems. According to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich, PS3 owners prefer exclusives on their systems. In fact, a title that is exclusive to PS3 will sell 45% better on the system than a multiplatform title. Exclusives on both the Wii and Xbox 360, according to the analyst, only have a "small increase" over multiplatform titles.

June NPDs are almost guaranteed to belong to Sony, and Microsoft may respond to two consecutive months of PS3 victories through a price cut announced at E3. How will this affect the price of the PS3? "If there is a hardware price cut, it is not known if Sony will follow suit right way, but it would be safe to assume that Sony would execute some type of plan within a 2 month window of any hardware price cut from the Xbox 360."

The console war looks to be heating up. It'll be interesting to see where it goes in the coming months.

Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit becomes bestselling game in Japan

PS3 software topped the charts in Japan this week, thanks to the release of Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit. It's amazing to see that, years after the end of the series, the dedication to this popular manga/anime goes strong. Although this brawler is multiplatform, you wouldn't be able to tell from this week's top 10 software charts. It'll be interesting to see what they look like next week, when Metal Gear Solid 4 reigns terror upon the charts.
  1. Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit (PS3)
  2. Fushigi no Dungeon (Wii)
  3. Wii Fit (Wii)
  4. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
  5. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu Portable 3 (PSP)
  6. Yamamura Misa Suspense (DS)
  7. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (PSP)
  8. Ninja Gaiden II (360)
  9. Family Trainer: Athletic World (Wii)
  10. Valhalla Knights 2 (PSP)

PS3 outsells 360 in Australia

For Quarter one of 2008, that is. It's a small victory for our sleek black box; however, it surely is an interesting victory considering that the PS3 is a very pricey machine down under. According to Sony managing director Michael Ephraim who spoke with PALGN, the PS3 outsold the 360 by 45% in Q1 2008. Ephraim believes that, "it's a matter of time before [the PS3] surpass the install base [of the Xbox 360 in Australia]."

It looks like this far away PAL continent is starting to follow the footsteps of their European friends. Could Australia become the next Sony stronghold? Ephraim thinks so, "[Microsoft] were very weak in Continental Europe, so they have done fairly well here, but with the rate we're going we will definitely surpass the install base, we're just guessing somewhere around the end of the year, if not sooner if the trend keeps going the way it is."

April NPD: GTA IV million seller on PS3, hardware sales close to 360

NPD figures for April have finally come in and this time, it's a close call between Xbox 360 and PS3. According to the NPD, PS3 sold 187,071 hardware units last month, which represents a year-over-year sales growth of 127%. More importantly, software sales have gone up 410% from last year, with over 2 million software units sold in April. A large portion of that figure comes from Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold over one million copies on PS3 in North America. The PS3 version had a higher attach ratio, although the Xbox 360 version still outsold the PS3 version almost 2:1. Predictions that PlayStation loyalty from the PS2 era would help PS3 sales were incorrect.

While Sony's home console didn't win any sales contests this month, it has gained a tremendous amount of momentum, especially when one remembers the console at the same time last year. The newly released rumble-ready DualShock 3 controller also sold incredibly well, with sales exceeding $10.9 million in April. By our calculations, that means over 200,000 controllers were sold in April alone. Not bad, huh?

Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA, responded to this month's numbers: "Clearly, the tremendous legacy of Grand Theft Auto on PlayStation, combined with the blockbuster launch of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue packed a one-two punch with consumers at retail this month. The proof is in the numbers and, in April, PlayStation 3 hardware sales experienced a 127% increase over April of last year. PS3 momentum is fueled by enthusiasm for Blu-ray as the definitive high def standard and the growing number of consumers gearing up for some of the most anticipated titles of the year, exclusively for PS3, including the June release of Metal Gear Solid 4, and other great exclusives in the second half on the year, such as Resistance 2, SOCOM: Confrontation and LittleBigPlanet to name a few. With exciting PlayStation Network innovations and our strongest console-driving titles of the year still on the horizon, PS3 remains on pace for a breakthrough year."

PS3 price cut unlikely as Sony refocuses on profitability

Analysts at Lazard Capital Markets believe that a PS3 price cut will be highly unlikely this year, as Sony refocuses the company on profits, not market share. The PS3 has been trailing significantly behind its competitors, Xbox 360 and Wii, in this generation for a number of reasons. However, Sony may opt out of competing in the "console war."

"Console market share appears to be less of a priority; price cut less likely," explained Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets. "On its earnings call, Sony management indicated the company is now more focused on achieving profitability in the PlayStation segment ... Importantly, management comments also suggest that a price cut is less likely on the PS3 this year, at least in the near term."

Sony does have strong momentum on its side. With more than 9 million consoles sold in fiscal 2008 alone, and that figure expected to double by next fiscal year, things are still looking up for the PlayStation brand.

PS3 sales reach 9 million in fiscal 2008

For the financial year ending March 31, 2008, Sony Computer Entertainment managed to sell 9.24 PS3 consoles worldwide. That's an increase of 5.63 million systems from the previous fiscal year. (Note: Fiscal 2007 was much shorter for PS3, due to its November launch.) Sony's first year in this generation was admittedly lackluster, with the company receiving a lot of flak from the hardcore gaming community. Since then, a number of high-profile releases have earned PS3 a better portion of gamer mindshare.

Software sales also experienced a tremendous boom, jumping from the miniscule 13.3 million to 57.9 million. Obviously, with more systems, more games, and more time, sales of software will experience quite a boon. As good as these numbers are, PS3 is still in infancy -- we can't wait to see how well it does in the next 12 months.

Europe becomes biggest Sony territory

Move over America. Get out of the way Japan. Europe is now a bigger consumer of Sony electronics and video games than both of you. While sales and operating income for the Japanese electronics giant has fallen in both the US and Sony's homeland of Japan, these losses were offset by significant growth in Europe. Total sales and operating income rose to 2.33 trillion yen in Europe, which represents a 14% growth overall.

These numbers include both the gaming and electronics divisions (PlayStation-only numbers were unavailable). Sony's brand image continues to be incredibly strong in Europe, and the current success of the PS3 across the Atlantic shows that this isn't going to change any time soon.

SCEA's Peter Dille comments on GTA IV sales

According to Level Up, the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV has been outselling the PS3 at nearly a 2-1 ratio, with 64% of sales going to Microsoft's platform, and 36% going to Sony's. Granted, this data comes from first week sales at GameStop, which will skew towards early-adopting hardcore gamers. Many had suggested that GTA was so strongly associated with the PlayStation brand that PS3 sales would boom from the release of the new GTA. Could this initial sales data suggest otherwise?

Peter Dille, senior VP of marketing at SCEA, thinks that this is a figure that Microsoft shouldn't deem as a victory. He says that any difference in sales is due to the difference of install bases. "There's a larger installed base right now on Xbox 360 than on PS3. So it's not surprising that there's going to be more selling on Xbox 360 than PS3. Having said that, we're really excited about the ratio. If I had an installed base advantage of 3-1, I wouldn't be crowing too much about a 60-40 sales advantage."

The coming weeks and months will start drawing in the more casual market to the game, a sector which the PS2 captured wholeheartedly in the last generation of consoles. "We think it's not as high as what GameStop's telling you, if you look at [the full picture on] the national level. They're outselling us, but not by that same margin, and it's because of their installed base lead. With an installed base lead that's close to 3-1, if you're bragging about a 60-40 software split, it's clear evidence that the PlayStation 3 consumer is overindexing on GTA IV, and the PlayStation brand loyalty that we've been talking about is bearing itself out in the marketplace as we speak."

Pachter, simExchange offer conflicting predictions of console sales

April NPD sales are expected this Thursday, and analysts are ready to offer their key bits of insight. As usual, we cast much doubt on the accuracy of these sales predictions, especially when two of the largest sources offer conflicting reports. Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter has once again predicted a victory for PS3 over Xbox 360 this month (he incorrectly predicted a PS3 victory last month as well).

Pachter believes that PS3 will push 290k units, Xbox 360 275k, and the Wii will trounce on both with a whopping 600k. PS3 fans shouldn't rejoice too soon, however. simExchange, another group of analysts, predicts that Xbox 360 will sell 381k and PS3 will sell 363k.

With such contradictory numbers being thrown around, one has to wonder how analysts make these numbers, and why they continue to be relevant. Thursday's revelations of official NPD numbers should see which analyst wins the guessing game.

Gran Turismo series reaches 50 million milestone

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. sent out a self-congratulatory press release, bragging about how the Gran Turismo series has sold over 50 million units, as of April 30th. It took a little over 10 years for the franchise, which spans over across all three PlayStation home consoles, to reach this incredible milestone.

The latest release in the franchise is Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which provides PS3 gamers an early taste of "next-gen" racing. 16-player online racing, Gran Turismo TV, and downloadable content are some of the key features in GT5:P, and they show exactly how far this franchise has come since its first release on PS1.

"Initially, Gran Turismo was an 'alternative' racing game, kind of an outsider in the genre," said Kazunori Yamauchi, Producer of Gran Turismo. "And we made it thinking that it would be okay as long as it reached out to 'the select few who would agree with us.' So this figure, 50 million units - is simply astounding. If you go to a game store and look for a particular package, and pay for it at the cash register, though the time may be very brief, it still takes at least 3 minutes or so. It's simply mind boggling and hard to believe that this has been repeated 50 million times all around the world in the last 10 years. I would really like to thank all the fans who have supported the Gran Turismo series over the years, for all their passion and love of the game. We'd like to continue making every effort to create cutting edge, high quality games, so that we don't disappoint anyone's expectations.

SCEE expects LittleBigPlanet to be biggest PS3 game ever

Currently, the top-selling PS3 game in Europe is Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. With over a million pre-orders for the game, it became a clear system-seller in that territory. However, Sony Europe is expecting 2D community platformer LittleBigPlanet to surpass even GT5's impressive sales. "We're hoping sales will be higher than GT5 Prologue," David Reeves told GI.biz.

Analysts have called LittleBigPlanet a potential system-seller for the PS3. Its accessible gameplay and emphasis on creation and sharing will undoubtedly draw in a new audience to the PS3. However, will the casual gamer really jump to a system that's still considered prohibitively expensive (especially in comparison to the Wii)?

Kaz Hirai noted that "[LittleBigPlanet] will completely revolutionize the way gamers interact with their games, especially through the community functions and the ability to interact with LittleBigPlanet lovers around the globe," during the PlayStation Day keynote.
