Xbox 360 pulls ahead of PS3 in GTA IV poll

We received an incredible response from our Joystiq network-wide poll. With over 38k votes from Joystiq, PS3 Fanboy and Xbox 360 combined, we amassed a rather sizable sample size to study from. The conclusion? More people are picking up the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV. However, considering the sizable difference between PS3 and Xbox 360 userbases, we were surprised to see the PS3 version perform so well.

If these results translate into real-world sales, it would be clear that Microsoft's $50 million check to acquire exclusive DLC played little role in making the 360 version the de-facto version it may have hoped to become. With the potential for so much gameplay out-of-the-box, it seems that many gamers (42% of you, in fact) don't think DLC is too big of a selling point.

Joystiq network poll: Which system for GTA IV?

There's a big game coming out this month. In case you haven't heard, it's called Grand Theft Auto IV. It's coming out on both Xbox 360 and PS3, and we're curious to see which console Joystiq network readers will choose. The poll will run on Joystiq, PS3 Fanboy and Xbox 360 Fanboy, but you can only vote once. Will PS3's free PSN multiplayer, or Xbox 360's exclusive DLC offerings, sway your purchase? Let us know. Voting will end this Sunday, at noon.

PS3 Poll Police: How many PS3 games do you own?

We'll start off our new weekly poll feature this week with an easy question: how many PS3 games do you own? I'll admit that I started my PS3 journey with very few games to call my own -- just a couple in fact. Slowly, but surely, my library has grown with the release of more titles. I'll even been adding a new one to the library this week, bringing my total to 7 (I rent quite a few too).

So, how many games do you have... and which ones? Will you be picking up Spiderman this week... and what's on your shopping list in the weeks ahead?

PlayStation 3 shows up the Wii in Japan, according to...

Polls and surveys, in their ever-accurate representation of market share, can at least show how certain audiences are reacting to what companies are offering. Take this latest chart for example. Amazon of Japan has some numbers which show the next-gen Sony console climbing past the Nintendo Wii in popularity. To be specific, we're talking about the 60GB version as the 20GB PS3 was the least popular.

Yes, this does in fact contradict a Famitsu poll that showed quite the opposite (with the Wii taking 73% and the PS3 pulling out 17%). What readers need to understand is that this is coming from Amazon's vantage point and doesn't take into consideration the opinions of retailers or developers. It's a relative poll showing some positive feedback, which is always welcome, but it's not definitive (and as Sony fanboys, we know about over-reacting and how to avoid it).

In the end, this does show some good news for Amazon of Japan though. However we're still waiting on those scientifically proven surveys to come out (should be any minute now...).

The results are in: You embrace Blu-ray! (Some of you)

We decided it was time to take the Blu-ray inquiry out of limbo and officially close the poll. As you can see, over 1,400 readers had something to say about it. So, what do you think about Blu-ray? More than half of you embrace the strategic move by Sony to include the next-generation format in the new console. This speaks a lot to the kind of people we have interested in the system: those who opted for the first choice are willing to take the price spike for the new medium.

On the other end, over 30% said they should have the right to decide for themselves. Two versions of the console would cut the cost considerably, but leave Sony more vulnerable to HD-DVD by not smuggling Blu-ray in with every PS3.

At any rate, thanks for voting! And if you harbor a burning desire to know what the community here thinks and have an interesting question to ask the audience, let us know.

What do you think about the PS3 and Blu-ray?

We wanna know! Tell us about your thoughts concerning the PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray. It's hard to go a week without having someone say something about the issue, so here's your chance to finally throw down. Check out the poll below and see what's up. And no, you won't find an "Other" option for those of you not interested in purchasing the system. So what are you waiting for? Cast your vote and leave a comment!

[The poll is officially closed! Check the results here.]

Gamers speak up: Blu-ray is okay!

According to one community, fans looking forward to the PlayStation 3 say that bundling a Blu-ray player with the new console was a good move by Sony. A resounding 67% said they agree with the inclusion (granted it was only out of 1,120 votes). However the other third that voted thinks it would have been wise to have the option to choose it with or without Blu-ray.

Whether Sony should have had two version of the console is neither here nor there. What really matters is what the gaming community thinks as a whole. Should Blu-ray have been optional or not? We've tackled this one before, but it would be very interesting to see the results played out on a wider poll. Expect one addressing this question to pop up next week and we'll get some formal numbers from our own community to see what you think.

More revealing poll results from Famitsu

We know how much everyone just loves polls and how indicative they are of the market share, but don't put away your sticks and clubs just yet because we have one more to add to the list. Famitsu polled their readers on a few of their interests, and the results may surprise you (or not).

So what games are they most interested in? Here they are:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii, Nintendo)
2. Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, Square Enix)

3. Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3, Konami)
4. Dragon Quest Swords (Wii, Square Enix)
5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii, Nintendo)
6. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, Nintendo)
7. Final Fantasy III (NDS, Square Enix)
8. Monster Hunter 3 (PS3, Capcom)
9. Resident Evil (Wii, Capcom)
10. Halo 3 (Xbox 360)

The last one there may have made you raise an eyebrow. Famitsu also asked their readers about their favorite hardware at the moment and what they thought about the price of the PlayStation 3. Follow the link for the rest of the results.

And the winner of the console war is... ?

In a recent poll by GameSpot, the gaming community piped up about their future spending on next-gen consoles. The question was, "Which of the three next-gen consoles do you think you'll own by this time next year?"

Taking into consideration the news from E3, the results may not surprise you:
Just a Wii 27.57% 26052
Just a PS3 17.03% 16093
PS3 and Wii 16.69% 15774
Wii and 360 13.18% 12455
None of them 8.32% 7865
All three 6.62% 6257
PS3 and 360 5.28% 4986
Just a 360 5.31% 5022

Second place isn't exactly where Sony wishes they could be right now. However there's a certain law of economy at work here that just makes you say "duh!" Of course, polls are by no means representative of the unforeseeable future, so keep your ear to the ground and we'll see what happens.
