Job listing suggests Star Trek Online heading to PS3

Job advertisements are often a useful source of information and this listing for Cryptic Studios is no exception. It seems the Star Trek Online developer is looking for some PS3 coding talent to get their MMO engine running nicely on the system. if Star Trek Online (or any other Cryptic properties) are coming to the PS3 then they're the latest in a long line of MMOs that we've been promised for the system.

Between NC Soft's announcement of bringing games to the platform in mid-2007 and SOE's numerous offerings, such as DC Universe Online and The Agency, we've yet to see a single one released. Still, variety is the spice of life and we're happy to hear that there's a chance Star Trek Online will be heading PS3wards. Think you can make it happen? Apply at Cryptic Studios' official website.

Ten minutes of the casual PS3 MMO, Free Realms

There are a number of MMO titles coming to PS3 via Sony Online Entertainment. This ten minute video from the developers tries to explain how the upcoming casual MMO will work, starting from its Facebook-like social networking website, moving on to the four styles of gameplay Free Realms features. Burning questions like "can I be a ninja?" are answered (the answer is yes). Unlike other MMO games, Free Realms is more about various mini-games -- there is combat, but it's optional.

The Agency interview with SOE's Matt Wilson

Our friends over at Massively got a chance to talk to SOE's Director of Development, Matt Wilson, about the latest developments concerning The Agency. Wilson reveals the following:
  • They are currently in "full alpha" and the plan is for a beta in the fall. They are also working towards a demo.
  • They haven't decided between a subscription based financial model or a microtransaction one. However, Wilson noted that the PS3 is a console, and "console players don't generally do subscriptions."
  • The penalty for death will be "as lightweight as possible to begin with" since the player will die "frequently." Penalty will mostly be in the form of lost gameplay time, but Wilson cites an example of after dying ten times, you'll need to get fixed up at a field office, presumably losing extra time.
  • World events are planned, and SOE is hoping for content that "is easily playable for everyone" and accessible to players who do not invest as much time into the game.
  • Vehicle combat will take place. No other specific details are given.
With SOE coming out with two MMOs in the near future, do you think the PS3 will dominate as a console for that genre? Read the entire interview over at Massively.

DC Universe Online screenshots, demonstration at Comic-Con

We finally have some actual screenshots from DC Universe Online, as opposed to the thumbnail sized ones we saw on the game's MySpace page. Like the E3 trailer, they seem to be focusing on the well-known denizens of the DC Universe. Keep in mind you won't actually be able to play as one of them, but rather as hero/villain you create on your own.

SOE has also announced they will be "revealing exciting new details" about DCUO at Comic-Con, which begins tomorrow. There will also be a "first-ever public demonstration" taking place, so if you are a fan of all this superhero business and you are around San Diego, drop by and check it out.

DC Universe Online creative director talks about the game on PS3

Our buddies over at Massively got a chance to talk to Creative Director Chris Cao and SOE-Austin VP of development John Blakely about how DC Universe Online will interact with the PS3. Those who are concerned about patches for the PS3 having delays compared to the PC game might have some cause. Depending on the update, "there will probably always be an additional level of scrutiny and certification when going to the PLAYSTATION Network, especially when we change the actual executable," so any delays would be due to that. They added that if it is just content or data on the server, there shouldn't be any lag.

Blakely also tells us of random tests they did where players were given a PC setup and a PS3 controller to play DCUO. They "were able to kind of switch between the two and have a good time." They also looking to have a simultaneous launch of both version of the game. Blakely is also promising complete interoperability between the two platforms -- but long term plans might change. "We want to make sure that we don't bind the two. We want to make sure they're able to work with each other. If we can get proven and comfortable with that, then we'll do that. If not then we'll separate those two elements." For more details, read the entire interview over at Massively.

DC Universe Online's MySpace page wants you as a friend

When was the last time a Universe wanted to be your friend? Now you have a chance with the promotional MySpace page of DC Universe Online. The page contains a video/slideshow of concept art of characters and locations, wallpapers, buddy icons, screenshots, and even a blog of the DCUO team. Furthermore, if you make DCUO a top MySpace friend, print out the page and bring it to Comic-Con, you can attend their 21-and-over party. Another interesting titbit is the blog where Senior Producer Wes Yanagi states the party will be their first showing of a public demo. We would totally be there if we were in the Bay Area, but alas, we are not. Check out the MySpace page here.

Sony MMO DC Universe Online first details

The latest issue of Edge magazine has some details concerning DC Universe Online straight out of executive creative director Jim Lee's mouth. DC Universe Online, which will be released on the PS3 and PC, is a MMO that will include the cast of heroes and villains of the DC universe -- that's Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Darkseid, to name a few. Lee describes the genre as a "kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game" where you create a unique superhero or villain and choose his/her/its superpowers. Abilities named so far include attacking with fire or ice, acrobatics, flight, speed-running and teleportation. Unfortunately, you can't be the Flash or Poison Ivy or any of the famous (or infamous) DC characters for obvious reasons.

You then level up, improving your powers and learning new tricks; for example, flying becomes attacking while flying. Eventually you get to interact with famous DC characters, and Lee cites a mission/quest for a hero where you save Superman from Lex Luthor or, for a villain, attacking Metropolis and battling the Man of Steel. Gotham City is another place you can attack.

There is also less of an emphasis on instances and raids compared with other MMOs, and the focus will be on action rather than grinding. PvP details include arenas where you can use your superpowers against others and interact with multiple players: "someone might freeze your character in a block of ice, then pick up the block and chuck it at another player" and these arenas can also become "giant PvE boss battles." Lee also hinted at story events in DC Universe Online happening simultaneously with comic book DC Universe.

We are actually pretty stoked about this; with a well-known and well-established franchise behind this MMO, Sony might just have a fighting chance. We'll see how it is marketed and whether the gameplay elements live up to expectations when the game comes "next year."

SOE President talks console MMOs, rivaling WoW

GameDaily had a chat with Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley about the recent Sony corporate shuffle and what's going to happen to SOE as a result of this. According to Smedley, the change is "an opportunity and not a restriction" as SOE will have better proximity to SCE and will possibly develop more intimately for the PS3.

He backed up his opportunity claim by stating that console MMOs have a huge potential for growth as consoles are stable online-capable platforms, and already have a large user-base. He even says that console-based MMOs could possibly rival the success of World of Warcraft.

"Console online gaming in general I think is going to be one of the next huge phases of growth in the online gaming space," said Smeldey. With SOE currently working on PS3 versions of The Agency, a DC universe MMO, and Free Realms, there's no doubt the company is putting action to words. However, could any of you see any one of these titles possibly going toe-to-toe with the king of MMOs? Console MMOs as World of Warcraft beaters, perhaps not yet. Better console MMOs soon? Most likely.

NCSoft promises to unveil PS3 game this year

Popular MMO publisher NCSoft has been relatively quiet since announcing their partnership with Sony at E3 last year. The deal secured console exclusivity for PS3, with four games supposedly in the pipeline. NCSoft's new president Chris Chung told Wired that the company should have "something to announce -- not only announce but to show -- by the second half of this year. I'm pretty psyched about that."

The game will be far more than just a simple port of an existing game. In fact, Chung thinks that an online game must be reimagined to really work on a console. "You have to create a gameplay that's really suitable for the console space, the console experience. I mean, it's very different from PC."

Supposedly, the Mountain View studio (team behind the successful City of Heroes/Villians series) is donned the title of "console specialist." We can't wait to find out more, but let's not forget ... NCSoft has done this song and dance before.

Watch CES footage of The Agency

It's been a long time since we last heard from SOE about their upcoming PS3/PC MMO action game, The Agency. There's a lot of potential in this online initiative. Watch the SOE presentation from the CES show in Las Vegas, and tell us what you think. It appears the game isn't delivering on every level, but the concept has us excited.

Angel Love Online brings cuteness to PS3

Tetsuya Mizuguchi is known for creating some off-the-wall games. I mean, this is the same guy who helmed Space Channel 5, Rez and Lumines, but Angel Love Online could be the strangest one yet.

While the free-to-play MMO features the standard RPG knights, mages and robots, you'll also apparently be able to command humanoid pigs, cats, dogs, zombies with candles on their heads, Native Americans and several creatures the English language has no names for.

Although, it's difficult to understand what's going on in the video since it's all in Japanese and the screen is obscured by disturbingly cute characters, Mizuguchi and his team definitely know what they're doing ... at least we think they do.

SOE: All our MMOs in development have a console component

Sony Online Entertainment has been responsible for some of the most popular MMO games ever. The studio behind Everquest (1 and 2), Planetside, Vanguard and a host of other massively multiplayer games has recently unveiled a new lineup of titles, including Gods & Heroes, The Agency, Free Realms, and the just-announced Ramayan 3392 A.D (see above image). Though only The Agency has been announced for the PlayStation 3, Nicholas Beliaeff recently tossed a bucket of gasoline on the rumor fire that we may be getting a couple more massively massive games on the PS3.

When asked by Gamasutra if SOE is looking more seriously at console MMOs, Nicholas said, "Absolutely. We have EverQuest Online Adventures that came out on the PS2 four years ago, and that was one of the first, along with Final Fantasy XI, to be a console MMO. For us as a company moving forward, all of our MMOs in development have a console component."

It's the last line that is the most exciting to us, it strongly indicates that SOE is going to be supporting the PSN in a big, BIG way. While this isn't as big as say, an announcement that Warcrack is coming to the PS3 -- the acknowledgment that every MMO that SOE makes from now on will appear on the PS3 is pretty amazing. So ... which SOE MMO do you want?

Rumor roundup: Ninja Gaiden Black, Burnout

Don't worry, these aren't just surfacing from the intarweb or malicious websites. Coming from Electronic Gaming Monthly, there's a bit more credibility to them. However, a rumor is a rumor, so don't take anything to heart!

According to the publication, gamers could be seeing a PS3 installment of Ninja Gaiden Black. Should this prove true, it wouldn't be practical to hold out for a November release. However anything next-gen of the dangerous assassin would be well-received (but doubly so with an original title).

Another rumor surfacing talks about the possibility of seeing a massively multiplayer version of Burnout. Talk about some design mechanics! This would have a lot of potential with a big fan base backing it. So there you have it: rumors for the taking. If we get any followups, you'll know where to find them.

Star Wars Galaxies coming to PS3, say Amazon and Buy.com

Paperback strategy guide product page of Star
Wars Galaxies for consoles
If this product page for a Star Wars Galaxies strategy guide from Buy.com (and Amazon.com) are to be believed, then one could reasonably deduce that the troubled MMO will be making its way to the PS3 sometime soon.

The evidence? First, that parenthetical platform designation of "Console" for the strat guide. As Galaxies was cancelled for the PS2 a long, long time ago, and there would be no reason to order up a guide for a non-existing game, it would stand to reason that Sony's main MMO not named EverQuest would be seeing some action on the next generation system.

And next, that pre-order release date of 4/30/2006. There's a chance that means Prima and the major e-tailers you see here forgot to update their product pages to reflect the delayed PS3 launch (from spring to early November of this year). Either that or they're actually referencing the cancelled PS2 version with a random future date to avoid any responsibility for the thing. Sometimes you just gotta read between the lines.

[Thanks, David A.]
