No matter how you spin it, Mirror's Edge has been a flop. In an effort to boost sales, EA and DICE has announced that the Time Trial Mode in the demo that was previously exclusive to those who pre-ordered from Gamestop has been unlocked to the general public. All you have to do is head to the main menu, select "Race", then pick "Play Time Trial". When prompted, just enter any 16-digit code in order to unlock the mode.
Tme Trial Mode "challenges players to find the fastest routes throughout the city." You can even upload your best times to the scoreboards and compare it against your friends. We doubt any of this will cause a sudden spike in Mirror's Edge sales, but hey, it's free!
EA and DICE have announced details on Mirror's Edge DLC. In late January, players will be able to download nine new races for the Time Trial mode. According to the press release, these levels will have "no guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner." We're not entirely sure what that means, but we certainly want to find out. Update: Well, this new video certainly clears things up. Wow.
The nine new races will cost $10. However, PS3 owners get a special treat. All owners of the game can download an additional tenth race for free from the PlayStation Store. This is the PS3-exclusive DLC we've been waiting to hear about. (Who doesn't like free stuff?)
This is really sick. EA has teamed up with Borne Games to create a 2D version of Mirror's Edge. The beta, which is available here, is incredibly well made. The visuals are silky smooth, and the music is taken straight from the game. Even better: the controls work incredibly well, translating Faith's fluid movements into 2D. EA, we think you have a winner here. Why not make this a PSN/PSP game for us to buy?

So, now that Mirror's Edge is out, what's next for Faith and friends? Well, more Mirror's Edge. DICE and EA have announced DLC for the game will be available early next year, but haven't revealed any more details. A Sony rep said that PS3 would receive some form of exclusive DLC. While added time trial levels seem most likely, perhaps DICE will add extra story chapters that fill in the gaping holes in the swiss cheese-like plot. We certainly wouldn't mind that.
It's very rare to pick up a game and think to yourself "this is the beginning of a new genre." But, that's exactly what Mirror's Edge is. It wasn't too long ago EA and DICE unveiled the game with a stunning gameplay trailer that had us all asking: "is this really possible?" The answer is a resounding "yes."
Mirror's Edge has almost everything going for it. The innovative first-person parkour gameplay, meshed with a distinct high-contrast style, makes it look and play unlike anything before it. To think, only a generation ago, we touted Metroid Prime on Gamecube for its ability to successfully present first-person platforming. Mirror's Edge goes even further, offering a system that's far more complex, but at the same time, deceptively intuitive.
Not the biggest week ever (unless you're in Japan), but at least that means Mirror's Edge will get the attention it deserves. While you're not running and jumping across buildings Americans will have a chance to go back to World War II, while Europeans will have plenty to sing about with two SingStar titles. Here's the full release list:
Release dates are constantly subject to change, so be sure to check with your local retailer before heading out. Your PS3 is region free, so feel free to import any of the above titles. Do, however, keep in mind that downloadable content is locked to specific regions, so you'll need to get your DLC for US games from the US PSN Store.
We really wish we could tell you how awesome Mirror's Edge is. Unfortunately, there's an embargo date on the review. So, just take a look at this (the final?) trailer for EA's upcoming first person parkour game. This trailer reveals some of the later levels in the game, and shows off even more of the stunning train tunnel sequence. We won't say anymore, but if you don't scream "OMG" during this segment, you have nerves of steel.
Not a tremendous amount of interesting stuff this week, but the Mirror's Edge demo more than makes up for that. There's also a PS1 game and a whole bunch of overpriced (and belated) Soul Calibur IV DLC. By now you should have that Mirror's Edge demo downloading. At almost a gigabyte, it might take a while, so why not peruse the full list of content contained in this week's update while you wait?

The Mirror's Edge team is taking the PS3 seriously. The demo will available on PSN today (XBL tomorrow for Gold users). In order to promote the release of the playable demo, EA has released a new trailer -- and it's all about the PS3. Many of the quotes come from various PlayStation magazines around the world, praising the game's innovative controls and concept. Once the Store update goes live, let us know what you think about the game.
And by this week, we mean tomorrow. (The demo was originally planned for November.) The PlayStation Store will be updated tomorrow with a sneak peak at EA/DICE's upcoming first person parkour game, Mirror's Edge. If you've read our hands-on impressions, you know that we're in love with the intuitive and innovative movement system. You'll be able to agree (or disagree) with us tomorrow.
What happens when you take one great thing (LittleBigPlanet) and combine it with another great thing (Mirror's Edge)? Well, it's like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Or, an Oreo cookie with milk. It is delicious.
Check out this incredibly well-designed LBP user level, after the break.
Immediately after our hands-on preview of Mirror's Edge, EA has released yet another animated trailer for the upcoming free running game. Once again, this animated short goes behind the scenes of Faith's past, revealing how she trained to be as quick and lethal as she is in the upcoming game. We cannot wait.
With only a month to go before EA releases its much-anticipated Mirror's Edge, we had a chance to play an updated demo. If you read Jem's PAX impressions, you should know about the basic controls of the game -- and it's amazing that such simple controls allow for such amazing feats of acrobatics. From the moment the controller went into my hands, it was clear exactly what I had to do. The intuitive controls, which largely rely on the four shoulder buttons, make for an engaging experience right from the get-go. However, as with any great platforming game, timing is vital to success -- that was made evident by the game's newly demonstrated Time Attack mode.
In this new race mode, players must do just one thing, and one thing well: get through a course as quickly as possible. A fairly linear path still has multiple approaches, and the best times will only be achieved by those truly skilled at the game. I cleared my first time trial rather easily, in over 1:20. Ghost data is then saved, and will appear the next time someone plays the same level.
Well, my time was bested by the PR representative. He took advantage of a few shortcuts that I didn't know about. For example, immediately at the beginning of the level, he ran towards the wall, did a kick and jumped on top of a closet. Then, he did another wall jump to go atop of the flight of stairs I had previously just run up. Doing such slick moves shaved a good number of seconds off his time. Wow.
According to this pre-order page for Mirror's Edge, a demo for the game will be available for download November 6th. The game's release date is the 11th, so the 6th seems like a logical date for a demo to be released. Guess we'll find out soon enough. For more on this stylish first-person action title, check out our hands-on impressions.
EA has announced their plans to release a Mirror's Edge remix soundtrack alongside the release of the game on November 11th (November 14th for Europe). The soundtrack will be available for download only and includes the Mirror's Edge theme tune, along with five different remixes. You may recognize the name of the song -- "Still Alive" -- but you won't recognize the tune. It's been recorded for Mirror's Edge specially by Swedish pop star Lisa Miskovsky.
Not sure whether you fancy it? If you pre-order the game in the US at Best Buy you'll get a CD with the track and one of the remixes. There's no word on a price, but those interested will no doubt be able to find out on iTunes when the soundtrack releases in just over a month. The full track list is as follows:
