So, gvgnumber1 from YouTube managed to trick a Wal-Mart employee into selling him a Metal Gear Solid 4 system early. And, he's unboxed it for the entire world to see. As of now, he doesn't know if he should keep it or sell it, but feel free to enjoy this lucky b*stard's ability to get his hands on MGS4 so much earlier than the rest of y'all.
We were originally excited about the official Metal Gear Solid 4 headset. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though the headset is worth the money. Gadget Madness has posted an incredibly helpful video review of the device, and it highlights the rather poor audio quality produced by the device. The recordings are very fuzzy, to the point where words blur and become indecipherable. Yikes! While this headset may not do the trick, we're confident that Sony's official SOCOM headset will blow away the competition in both quality and value.
Who needs three dimensions? That's fifty percent more than you really need! Metal Gear Solid requires you to play stealthily, and the game's training mode will do exactly that. You'll have to navigate a 2D world as Old Snake, sneaking under and behind guards. Use your camo at 100% to disappear a la the Tanooki suit from Mario 3. This clever presentation is a wonderful contrast to the incredible 3D graphics of Guns of the Patriots, no?
Just when it looked like there wasn't going to be any interesting updates today over at the Sony's PlayStation.Blog, Patrick Seybold, the senior manager of PR, announced that the new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer will be available to download from the PlayStation Store immediately following the Sony conference tomorrow. According to Patrick, Konami and Kojima Productions just finished the last touches on the trailer early today and even offers support for 5.1 surround sound, something sure to please the hardcore MGS-philes.
This E3 keeps getting more and more exciting. It's awesome that Sony has followed Microsoft's lead and is increasing the ability for the consumer to experience all the amazing stuff going on at E3 through their online stores. Unlike the last 'new' trailer, this one is suppose to actually be all new content. Hopefully we'll finally get some shots of real gameplay (unlikely) or at very least a new environment with less pooping, mooing deathbots. Oh Hideo, why must you tease us so?
The final box art for the European release of Haze has just been revealed by Free Radical. Sporting the now iconic image of Shane Carpenter with a smashed helmet, it's nothing overly special but still manages to pull off a certain amount of cool creepiness. Something about the guy's insane stare from behind the shattered front of his helmet is a little unsettling.
Interestingly, it appears that the main character getting his face smashed in is a key part of the storyline in Haze. If you download the European PSN Haze video that was released last week, you'll see how it actually happens and the importance of the event in the storyline. This combined with hints dropped in various interviews by Free Radical suggests that the beatdown delivered to your character will massively change his view on the world and the direction of the game.
It's great to see the developers putting a lot of attention and care into the storyline, their previous efforts, the Timesplitters series, were fantastic games but had just the lightest fluffiest storylines ever. Meanwhile Haze looks like it's going to rival the Metal Gear Solid series in political and moral complexity. Bring on the Machiavellian plot twists!
You've seen the new video, so no doubt your excitement for Metal Gear Solid 4 has once again reached the dizzy heights it did after last year's E3. Now CVG is reporting that Hideo Kojima is currently contemplating releasing a Limited Edition. Sounds like a fun idea to us. Make it so, Hideo!
While nothing more has really been said since it was mentioned in his latest "HIDECHAN Radio!" show, two weeks ago, that doesn't stop us from pondering on what such a tin could contain. Game? Check. Soundtrack? Would be nice. Artbook? Always fun to have. Replica bandana and dogtags? Why not!
What would you like to see in there, if it ever materialises?
This one literally just came in -- Konami has released a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4 and PlayFrance has the scoop. The trailer is similar to the E3 one released last year, but has a ton of additional content and has been remastered using the newest version of the MGS 4 engine, leading to a ton of little visual improvements. Animations, particle effects and over-all graphic fidelity have all definitely increased with this newest trailer - the scene where Old Snake puts the gun to his mouth, in particular, showcases some incredible lighting effects. It's great to see Konami hasn't been resting on their laurels, this new trailer shows a clear and marked improvement to a game that already looked amazing. The trailer ends with confirmation that the game will be coming out in 2007 - naysayers be damned.
The new trailer clocks in at over 13 minutes in length and what a blissful 13 minutes they are. The final scene with Raiden is incredible and worth the time investment by itself. What are you doing? Check it out NOW -- it demands your attention.
*Updated with embedded video - no more waiting for 20 minutes of buffering to watch some hot Snake action* Thanks for the headsup Humpty!
Tide us over? What does that even mean? If to tide is plural and group-inclusive, what's the singular? It's probably nothing... tide? Like, with the sea? To "ebb in and out" us over? Stupid sayings that only make sense because they're old sayings with implied meanings... thus getting assigned appropriately fitting definitions. That was a really strange rant -- I apologize. Anyway, there's a batch of new Metal Gear Solid 4 screenshots to set as your wallpaper or whatever you want.
They're neat, but we'd really like to know how this game is progressing! Will we get a demo soon? A downloadable trailer (preferably a new one)? Or will we be kept in the dark, akin to Raiden in MGS2 about the... (sigh) no spoilers, but suffice to say it's pretty messed up storywise. Enjoyable, though. Thoroughly enjoyable.
We picked up a GamePro magazine a couple of days back, because we like to read printed material every once in a while. Even though news travels so much faster on this crazy "series of tubes" called the internet, there are a few interviews and such that remain under the radar until the magazine hits shelves. One such interview was with Hideo Kojima, mastermind behind the Metal Gear games. Let's go over the key things we drew from his interview.
In MGS4, Snake won't be utilizing his back-to-the-wall move anymore -- Hideo says it's not a very realistic move for the battlefield Snake will be on. You can hide behind stuff, take a peek out, then shoot, though.
Blu-ray isn't all it's cracked up to be. Hold on. He says that a basic gameplay frame, HD visuals, and 5.1 sound takes up so much space that the advanced capacity of a Blu-ray is used up in no time. What does that say for plain ol' DVD's, then? MGS4 on multiple discs, perhaps?
Kojima wants to try out the Wii after MGS4 wraps up -- supposedly. What could he be planning?
Hideo doesn't care for HD at all. He purposely made the graphics appear dirtier than more generic "clean" screenshots, to bring a more realistic life to the atmosphere. That's good.
So what have we learned here? Blu-ray is easy to fill up, HD graphics can make things look like plastic and unrealistic, Snake will have to find another signature stealth pose, and the Wii is interesting. Sounds like any other day, really. I mean, I have GI Joes in my closet to play with if I want plastic-laden soldiers. I demand scarring and mud on my PS3 warriors and I will have it! Eventually.
There's a very interesting idea floating around. This idea says the upcoming PSP title, Metal Gear: Portable Ops is a little more than simply an MGS3 sequel -- it's a testing ground for new gameplay elements that may appear in Metal Gear Solid 4. Since MG:PO has some drastically different gameplay elements (4-man teams, limited inventory, recruiting any character seen to help you out, etc), Kojima and friends might be using the PSP game to see how people, and critics, react to these new styles of play.
You see, even though we've seen trailer after trailer of Metal Gear Solid 4, we've yet to see much concerning actual gameplay. An aging Snake taking on armies of mechs alone? Not likely. Many gameplay elements are completely unheard of -- this may be a reason why. What do you guys think? Is the PSP game a sort of test for how loyal enthusiasts react to gameplay changes that may appear in the PS3 title? It's an interesting idea, but at the same time, no one thought that Snake would battle with cards via Ac!d in future games.
Rumors are so fun because everyone starts to give their two cents, five cents, no sense, or compe...tence. Damn. Almost worked. Anyway, we've pranced down this road before, but it keeps coming up. Will Konami put Metal Gear Solid 4 onto the XBox 360 a month after the PS3 release? According to Noooz, someone "very high up" has given them the word, the official word, that the 360 version of MGS4 is due out a few months after the PS3 release because of a fear that there won't be enough PS3 units to generate a profit. Yawn. Can I put my two cents in yet?
What constitutes a rumor? The inability to cite a reputable source. Who is this guy's source? Someone "high up" that he can't name. Naturally. Why? Because either a) the guy he cites will come out and say "what? He's full of crap." or b) he doesn't even have one. So, take this as you will, but this is a rumor because there's no saying whether or not it's true. There's a possibility, what with more games going multi-platform and the Metal Gear Solid games generally going to other systems (the Twin Snakes remake on Gamecube and MGS2:S on the XBox, for example).
Our buddies at Joystiq took a stab at this also, contacted the editor of Noooz, and got the "I'm 100% confident" speech. You can be 100% confident that you're a male or female. You can't be 100% confident about this. Put on your discussion hats and let's dance!
You may be thinking to yourself, "!", but it's more like "?", followed by a shrug or perhaps a strange pattern of walking. Metal Gear overlord and storyteller extraordinaire, Hideo Kojima, does indeed miss the rumble feature in the Sony controller for the PS3, as told in an interview with OPM. He even "hopes it will come back". A lot of people do, Kojima-san, a lot of people do.
How about the motion-sensing? Kojima did say they would use it in some way, shape, or form, but wasn't specific as to what, exactly. Let's take some time to think about it. Would it be aiming? No, no... that needs more than six axes (axe-eees). Looking around corners? Maybe, but L2 and R2 did just fine there. Perhaps moving the camera after hitting the aforementioned buttons? No... the right analog was dandy. Perhaps controlling something akin to the Nikita missile? That would be subtle enough to not get in Kojima's way, but still a proper utilization. Leave us your theories here!
People over at Konami HQ have long been pressuring Hideo Kojima, mind behind the Metal Gear games, to go multi-platform. Until the time of this writing, he has remained adamant about staying solely on Sony platforms (although MGS2 did get onto the XBox after some time). So, what's the rumor, eh? Check out the cover of EGM. Zoom in or whatever on the smaller print right above Master Chief's head. MGS4 on the 360? Couldn't be! What's the proof? We won't know until we get our mitts on this magazine (I'll check my mailbox incessantly -- I'm that addicted to gaming "news"). Unless this magazine is out... don't think so. Last one we got had a huge Gears of War spread.
Well, let's try our best to keep this civilized, but... what do you guys think would happen if Metal Gear goes multi-platform? Is it truly (along with Squeenix -- debatable) the only thing keeping Sony afloat? How important are the (trite, meaningless phrase warning) killer apps for each system? Is it enough to have large quantities of "pretty good" games, or do you have to have one "I need this game right now or I'll kill you" among a sea of mediocre garbage? Ready? Go.
There are only a zillion Metal Gear Solid 4 trailers floating the internet, but YouTube has a new one tossed up from the Tokyo Game Show. There is what seems like gameplay footage, but it's still hard to tell. Either way, Kojima knows how to keep us interested in his work. Also floating around on YouTube is a much less interesting, but still noteworthy, Devil May Cry 4gameplay trailer. If we hear another person say how Dead Rising is amazing and how Devil May Cry is just hack n' slash, we will be very upset. And you wouldn't want us to get upset, would you? That would be tragic.
Normally, articles about new screenshots are pretty foolish, but when it's Metal Gear Solid 4 and some wallpaper-esque screens, it's worth a mention (and a look). Of note at the Neogaf forum is the notion the graphics were downgraded from what was shown at E3. Not so! From a long history of video-game dissection (rolling your eyes is acceptable), it seems more like these shots are actual gameplay and not the super-fancy polished bits from E3. Even so, look at that truck getting blown up! Awesome. Some textures do need touched up (the picture of the two soldiers) but that's not too big of a concern.
What else is there to say? Not very much. Check the screens and let's talk about it. Think these are gameplay, or simply less polished screens than what we're used to? Were the old ones gameplay? Answers going both ways are everywhere! Regardless, the game is looking like it'll be fun.
