Actual gameplay screenshots of Final Fantasy XIII

Looks like the latest Famitsu has (shock!) actual gameplay screenshots of the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII. While we can't host full scans of the magazine, FinalFantasy-XIII.net can. The real-time graphics look superb, and make us want to see the game in action. It's only a few months until Japan gets a playable demo of the game --- we're certain to see much more of the game then.

FFXIII scans: in-game battles, reveals first character name

Square Enix loves to dish out new, albeit tiny, info at the end of the year for its biggest titles like Final Fantasy XIII. It's sort of a playful tease reminding you that there's still something coming for the year ahead ... or several. In the latest scans from Japanese magazine V-Jump, there are some delicious new screen pics of FFXIII's in-game battles and its female protagonist looking contemplative and sultry.

Most of the information in the mag scans regarding the battle system is already well-known, such as no random encounters. The only truly new information is -- after two and a half years -- we're finally going to know one character's real name. While "Lightning" and "Snow" are code names for the main female lead and the blond dude with a bandana, "Oerba Dia Vanille" is the first actual name to be revealed, and it belongs to the spunky red-haired girl.

Other than this info, there's not much else to talk about. There is, however, some nice pictures to look at, so now would be a good time to head on over to VideogamerX and view all the scans.

Re: Final Fantasy XIII DVD trailers released

How long will these trailers stay online? We're not exactly sure. Hopefully, you'll be lucky enough to catch these Final Fantasy XIII trailers, captured from the recently released "Re: Final Fantasy XIII" DVD. Check out XIII and Versus after the break.

[Thanks, Torgo!]

New FFXIII & Versus XIII images from Cloud, including gameplay pics

The Cloud Message mag isn't even out on Japanese store shelves yet, and the internet is already blazing with sneaking peeks on the Fabula Nova Crystallis coverage within its pages. All three announced titles in the series: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (PSP) are all featured in the mag and there's juicy new info on each one.

For the two PS3 games, the new reveal on Versus XIII is a pretty big one. It's the first time anyone has seen gameplay images of the game. The images themselves are tiny (pictured above), but it is clearly seen (in the larger version) that numerous pictures show off in-game scenes as hinted by the visible HUD and map. As for the Main FFXIII title, the images don't reveal as much. It's interesting to note that a character design from the title's drawing board has been semi-blurred. It is possible that this design may be a new playable character, though that is not certain. If any of this has you interested, check out the larger sized images here and see the fine details.

Final Fantasy XIII screenshots, now larger, from TGS Closed Theater

Last week we posted about the latest Final Fantasy XIII scans from Famitsu. The scans weren't of the best quality, but now the Japanese gaming magazine has posted several larger pictures from the article on their website. They feature Lighting, Snow (the blonde guy), Sera (the pigtails girl), as well as the backside of the Sephiroth-esque female possibly-a-villain character participating in some sort of ceremony involving a coffin. Check out the rest of the pictures here. For those of you who missed it, our Square Enix Closed Mega Theater trailer impressions are here.

New Final Fantasy Versus XIII details surface

Famitsu has a four-page spread in their latest issue all about the PS3-exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII. You've probably seen some of it in the scans earlier this morning. In the magazine, the full name of Versus' sleepy protagonist prince is revealed to be Noctis Lucis Caelum -- which is Latin for "night, light and sky." The blonde-haired female friend of his is named Stella Nox Fleuret. Her name is Latin for "star, darkness and sword" and she appears to be a princess from another country. It is interesting to note that their respective appearances reflect each other's names.

The game's director, Tetsuya Nomura, points out that part of the plot was revealed in the TGS Closed Theater trailer. He notes that the discussion seen between these two characters in that trailer focused on their abilities to "see light." Noctis seems afraid to talk about these abilities, while Stella is very frank and opens up the dialogue by asking Noctis about how he obtained his ability.

It's rather funny to think that we now know slightly more about Versus XIII than we do of the main XIII title. That's especially harrowing after knowing Versus XIII isn't expected until after XIII is out.

New FF XIII and Versus XIII scans show TGS Closed Theater images

If you've read about our Square Enix Closed Mega Theater trailer impressions during our coverage of TGS, then you may have been left wanting to have seen those trailers for yourself. While you can't anymore see them the way we did, we've got the next best thing: pictures. New scans for both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII show off images which debuted in the Closed Theater.

In the image above, we see the two most prominent Versus characters engaged in their voiceless conversation. While in the FF XIII image posted after the break, you'll (hardly) see the new Sephiroth-like female character; you'll just see the back of her head. She's the image second from the bottom in the lower left corner. Wait a minute. Sephiroth-like female character? Voiceless conversation? What are you talking about, dude? If you don't know, then you better read those trailer impressions. Also, check out larger versions of the scans here.

You got Metal Gear and Final Fantasy in my LittleBigPlanet

Sony has announced that two new LittleBigPlanet costumes will be made available for download in the future. Metal Gear Solid's Old Snake and Final Fantasy VII's Sephiroth have been stripped and their clothes donated to the LittleBigPlanet thrift store. Unfortunately, there's no word on when they will be made available, or whether they'll be paid-for content. There's also no definite answer to whether they'll be available outside of Japan but, considering both games have large fanbases in the US and Europe, we'd be surprised if they didn't. Check out Sephiroth's Tokyo Game Show unveiling above and Old Snake's after the break.

Aren't they cute?

What's playable, and what's not, at Square Enix's TGS booth

2008 looks to be yet another excellent year for Tokyo Game Show. There's a lot of excitement over the potential surprises at the show. Square Enix has posted its lineup for this year's show, and we're a little saddened to see Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) still not playable. At the very least, we'll be getting some one-on-one time with Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP). Check out the full PlayStation list here:

Playable
Trailers-Only
We're expecting many of these trailers will be shown behind closed doors. Fear not, though. We'll provide detailed impressions of the trailers live from Tokyo next month.

Final Fantasy XIII demo may be sold separately

The Final Fantasy XIII demo to be packaged with the upcoming Blu-ray version of Advent Children Complete may be available separately after the film's release, according to an interview with Testuya Nomura (translated by FinalFantasyXIII.net). The upcoming demo, which gives players a 90 minute taste of the beginning of the game, may be distributed by a rather unconventional approach, though: it may be sold.

Yes, while demos have long been given away for free, Square Enix may considering selling the demo at a slight premium. This is unheard of, but considering the incredible demand for this hotly anticipated title, we wouldn't be surprised to see thousands of fans forking over some dough to get an early taste of the game. Hopefully, distribution of the demo outside of Japan will be a bit more ... free.

Final Fantasy XIII demo to be over 90 minutes long

The latest issue of Famitsu PS3 is all about the recent Square Enix DKΣ3713 event, and FinalFantasyXIII.net has a few juicy scans from the magazine. One of the more interesting things to point about the upcoming FFXIII demo bundled with Advent Children Complete: the demo will be on a separate Blu-ray disc (meaning it will unlikely be region locked), and the amount of gameplay is promised to be longer than the length of Advent Children. That means the FFXIII demo should be at least 90 minutes long, if not longer. That's huge! The demo will supposedly come from the very beginning of the game, so players won't have to worry about spoiling the later parts of the game.

[Thanks, Monkey!]

Final Fantasy XIII summons revealed in concept illustrations

Not too many made it into Square Enix's DKΣ3713 Private Party, because it is, you know, private. Luckily for us, not only was Gpara on the swanky guest list, they even managed to snap photos of the event for all to see. Unfortunately, Square Enix has a nasty habit of showing new trailers inside closed theaters that do not allow cameras, so we won't see any stills from those exclusive videos.

What we'll see instead are some concept illustrations of the locale and summon creatures of the Final Fantasy XIII universe. All of the locale shown seems to be aerial; does that mean the game will feature a Zeal-like kingdom? We also get a first glimpse at new interpretations of old summons like Shiva, Ifrit and Carbuncle. Take a look here.

Lastly, they have pictures of the Square Enix Goods Shop. We avoided looking at most of the pictures, because frankly, if we can't get our grubby little hands on those goods, we'd rather not look at all.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII collaboration with clothing brand ROEN

See the stylish clothes all the boys are wearing in Final Fantasy Versus XIII? Apparently, they come from the designs of the Japanese label ROEN. Their collaboration with Square Enix means they are designing clothing worn by the characters in the game. Additionally, you will be able to purchase some of the designs. Looking at ROEN's official website though, we see a leather blazer costing a jaw-dropping 346,500 yen (about $3,223 USD)!! This collaboration is certainly taking the cost of cosplay to a whole new level.

The concept to their autumn/winter 2008-09 collection is Play Boy -- "The theme of this imaginative story is set with men, who have shed-off their hippy image and are invited to a high society party ... ROEN is reborn to a mature, gorgeous and classy style." We couldn't make this stuff up if we tried.

Also of interest is that the trailer of Versus XIII shown earlier today at DKΣ3713 contains the words "PlayStation 3 only Worldwide" at the end. This appears to again confirm Versus XIII's PS3 exclusivity worldwide. But then again, Final Fantasy XIII had very similar words at the end of its trailers ...

Final Fantasy XIII confirmed for a 2009 Japanese release

In addition to a demo, it was announced today at DKΣ3713 that Final Fantasy XIII will be arriving in Japan in 2009. Keep in mind the PS3 version is the only version of FFXIII in Japan. According to Square Enix at E3, at the completion of the Japanese version, Square Enix will then begin localization of the game for the US and porting to the Xbox 360. It will receive a simultaneous release on both systems here in the US.

The official site has also launched, with nothing more than a trailer we saw already. Hopefully we'll see some updates in the coming days.
