Fat Princess coming 2009, says developer press release

Many of you have been asking us "where is Fat Princess, oh darn it?" Well, looks like it's 2009. First unveiled at E3 this year, the downloadable title earned a lot of buzz (both positive and negative) for its cute, gory, cake-filled concept.

A press release from Epic Games China has officially "announced" the "opening" of Titan Studios, the developer of the upcoming game. There are a few things we're confused by. First, why is Epic Games China opening a studio in Seattle? Last we checked, Seattle wasn't a part of China (unless, that is, the takeover has begun ...). Also, why is the studio being announced now? Maybe that's why Fat Princess is taking so long to develop! The studio wasn't actually official yet!

Titan Studios brings to it developers with experience at companies including Ubisoft, Epic Games, Scion Studios, Blizzard Entertainment and Lionhead Studios. Titan Studios is not only working on Fat Princess, but a number of other Unreal Engine 3 games, including a massively multiplayer online game.

Oddly, there are no fat princesses in these new screenshots from Leipzig. There are only skinny princesses to be seen. A game named Fat Princess should at least have one new screenshots with an actual chubby royal in it. We guess they need more cake. Hear that? More cake!

Fox News loves Fat Princess

So Fox News decides to discuss Fat Princess. Not because it falls in line with their "women exploited in gaming" line of stories, but rather quite the opposite. In fact, they seemingly love it despite the feminist outrage, which they mildly go over. "She has chunk ... I love it," a Fox News anchorwoman chimes in.

It is nice to hear that not all women are insecure about their bodies as to take offense towards Fat Princess, and at least more mainstream media and possibly casual audiences might like the game. Best quote of the day: "She's a fat princess. It happens."

To watch the footage, just follow this link. Or, if you can get the trailer after the break to play for you, then just watch it here.

Feminists unhappy with Fat Princess

Editor's Note: This article contains vulgar language.

Fat Princess
has garnered a lot of attention when it debuted at E3. The startlingly violent PSN multiplayer game got accolades from gamers and critics alike for its unique premise and appealing gameplay. However, not everyone is happy with Fat Princess.

Shakesville (picture, above) notes that the title furthers inappropriate gender stereotypes and continues the culture of ridicule that many overweight individuals must suffer through. "Anyway, congrats on your awesome new game, Sony. I'm positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes. It's not often I have the opportunity to congratulate a cutting-edge tech company on such splendiferous retrofuck jackholery. Way to go! The Fat Princess of Shakes Manor salutes you."

Feminist Gamers has a suggestion: they want the game to avoid making the princess become fat with cake. Instead, there are other non-"cute" ways of going about this, in terms of gameplay: "So how about layering, Karamari-style, a bunch of random shit on top of the chest, like shrubbery, rocks, bison, etc, that would also weight it down. That could be cute, and silly, and not reinforce nasty stereotypes about women and the obese."

Discuss.

Rescue that damsel in distress with this Fat Princess video

It's a short video, but it gets its point across -- Fat Princess will involve cartoon soldiers brutally slicing one another to pieces whilst a rotund princess is carried out of imprisonment and into her home territory. There's a pretty good scene around the :22 mark where you can really get a feel for how bloody the overly cute game can get. We'll await more details on this PSN title, as no release date as been announced yet.

Chances are you've read rumblings about Fat Princess throughout the web. This surprise PSN game announced at E3 really came out of nowhere. While a title like Fat Princess may sound unappealing, rest assured that this has the potential to become a real multiplayer PSN hit.

How do we describe Fat Princess? We like to think of it as Team Fortress meets Pikmin meets a high-carb diet. Ultimately, Fat Princess is simply a capture the flag game. However, the unique 2D presentation makes it rather surreal. The game supports up to a massive 32 players online, and the smart use of AI ensures that every battle you take online will be fun and exciting. You see, if you can't get all 32 players to play, or if someone drops out in the middle of a match, bots can quickly and transparantly take over. This way, every time you jump online, you'll have someone to play with.

Although there are multiple modes of play, there is usually one ultimate goal in Fat Princess, and that's to capture an enemy's princess and take them back to your own base. Each team will be split to Red and Blue teams, and each side will clash throughout the battlefields. There are a number of hats each player can don, and each hat represents a certain class, which yields certain abilities and powers.

Fat Princess rolls on over to PSN later this year

Saving hordes of survivors not your thing? How about saving a single lady? Already getting good buzz on forums, this upcoming PSN game features two medieval teams battling each other to save their princess for a dungeon. Humorously, Fat Princess has been fattened up by your enemies, so it will take many of your army to carry her to safety. There will be 10 maps and you can choose between 5 classes: Warrior, Archer, Mage, Worker, and the "deadly" Priest. How exactly a Priest deadly is unknown at this time; Holy perhaps?

The game can be played both offline and online, including a "32-player Online Skirmish." This looks to be a the next addiction for us post-PixelJunk Monsters, only with more blood. Check out the screenshots below.

[Note: According to the press release, there will be "Casual Single & Multiplayer Online/Offline Action," so it would appear there is some sort of offline multiplayer.]
