New Japanese Edge of Twilight trailer released

This new trailer for Australian developers Fuzzyeyes' upcoming steampunk adventure has a distinct lack of gameplay, but we'll forgive it that because it's so incredibly moody. The voice over is all in Japanese, so we've no idea what's actually going on, but the visuals allow you to get a glimpse of the steampunk setting. The game certainly got our attention when we were given a private demo at TGS, so check out our eyes-on impressions for more info.

TGS 08: Edge of Twilight impressions

Amid the vast array of Japanese developers and publishers on the TGS show floor sat one small booth which seemed slightly out of place. FUZZYEYES, an Australian development studio, chose to debut its upcoming 2009 title, Edge of Twilight, at the show, and we were invited in for a private demo. The game captured our attention with its dichotomous day/night gameplay and intriguing combat.
Edge of Twilight is pegged as a steampunk fantasy title which is part Soul Reaver, part God of War. A lot of emphasis is placed on dark and light. Day and night have been split apart, each inhabited by a different civilization. As a half-breed outcast your character, Lex, is able to pass between the two at certain points. Not only does gameplay change in each realm, but your character will also drastically change appearance.
During the day Lex looks similar to Keats from Folklore, with a metal arm and a steampunky lancer-style gun. While in this realm you are able to affect machines, your character is too heavy to jump around, rendering platforming sections nearly impassable. At night he transforms into something a little more monstrous. Part Gollum, part Nightcrawler. In this realm machines are dead, but the emphasis is more on platforming.

Edge of Twilight will support Trophies and Home
Edge of what? It's okay if you don't remember the game being announced. Thanks to a lack of developer pedigree (and we don't mean that in a nasty way), plus the fact that Edge of Twilight is a new IP being developed in Australia, the game hasn't been given much attention. Oh, it's also not due out til some time next year. While we may have heard very little about the title, what we have heard has us intrigued. When you describe the game as being an amalgamation of three of our favorite franchises, it's hard not to get us interested.
The latest news out of developer FuzzyEyes (via an interview with Gamespot) is that Edge of Twilight will support Trophies when it launches next year. They also have plans for Home content, which is always nice to hear. Check out the full interview for more information on why the developers decided to go for a steampunk style, some more background on the main character, Lex, and some insight into the day and night gameplay. Hopefully it'll work better than other games ...

Edge of Twilight is "Ico, Soul Reaver, and God of War" bundled up

That is to say, there's no "Jedi" and "Dark Side" choices -- everything is amoral and ambiguous. Two sides to every story. Speaking of story, the main character, Lex, is a half-breed of two social factions that make up the world. The actions he takes through the game, like meandering around on a side quest, will actually affect the flow of the main storyline.
Since you're a half-breed, you have two "personas". One during the day, which gives you brute strength to break scenery and manipulate machinery, and another at night that gives you agile movement and a different fighting style. These two personas will be key in opening up new areas to explore, so we're sure they'll come to light later on. Edge of Twilight is due out next year, so we'll keep our ears to the ground so we can hear the approaching stampede of news.
'Steampunk Fantasy' game Edge of Twilight coming to PS3
The game is being developed using the Unreal Engine 3 which, six months ago, would have had us worried. Unreal Tournament 3 has since shown us that UE3 games can rock on the PS3 and past tragedies such as Stranglehold and Blacksite can be forgotten. We have to say, we're getting some definite Legacy of Kain vibes off of this one (check out the main character,
