PS3 version of BioShock to be 'optimized' by Digital Extremes

Click for high-resolution image.

Usually, things go sour when the original developer of a game opts not to develop it for another platform. Case in point: the late-to-arrive EA-ported version of The Orange Box. A statement released by 2K Games reaffirms that development of the upcoming PS3 version of BioShock will be "assisted" by Digital Extremes (Unreal Championship, Dark Sector).

James Schmalz, CEO and founder of Digital Extremes had this to say in the press release: "You really can't ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the PLAYSTATION 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister 'thank you's'."

We're still hopeful for the PS3 version of this modern classic -- especially because it will reportedly have new content for PS3 owners. So long as this content isn't a "worse framerate," we'll be happy. We're counting on you Digital Extremes.

BioShock PS3 is official, out by October

2K Games have spoken up about BioShock on PS3 and reconfirmed that the game is due for October 2008. The game will have all the standard port stuff with the additional DLC and patches from the previous 360 version. However, Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K, assures us there's more coming: "Over the coming months we look forward to revealing the new features and content that will make this a must-have game for its new audience, as well as for those who enjoyed it on the other platforms."

Excellent, we're looking forward to knowing what those "new features and content" are. In the meantime, sit tight everyone and just enjoy this fan made box art.

Penny Arcade tells us what to think about Bioshock PS3

Attention PS3 Fanboy!

And so begins Penny Arcade's latest strip, which extols the merits of Bioshock. While many bashed the game as "just another FPS" when it failed to release on PS3 last year, the recently announced port should be met with some excitement and anticipation ... just not too much, please. Tycho explains properly: "at the very least, Playstation 3 stalwarts can stop hating it for no good Goddamned reason."

'Bioshock on PS3' rumor finally confirmed true

After first appearing in February 2007, a full five months before the games release, the rumor that Bioshock would be coming to PS3 has been debunked and revived more times than we can count (and we can count quite high!). Now, however, the time for rumors is over as the cover of UK mag PSM3 has not only confirmed that the title will be made available for the PS3, but that it will be a somehow superior version of the game. We won't find out in what way until the magazine arrives on news stands on June 5th.

While it may be a few weeks before we get any details on what makes the PS3 version different, it's nice to finally get some closure regarding this confusing "will it, won't it" rumor. However, the game has been out for over six months now, so we're hoping for some significant changes in order to make the port worthwhile. Let's be honest here, most gamers have played this on the 360 and those who didn't have played it on the PC. Right?

2K Marin job listing states that "PS3 experience is required"

This one is a bit confusing. We know 2K Marin are working on Bioshock 2 which, we assumed, would be a 360 exclusive like its big daddy brother. The cognitive water begins to get muddy, however, when we look at 2K Marin's job listings. While the jobs aren't necessarily for Bioshock 2, the game isn't due out until next year and we would be surprised if Marin are working on two titles simultaneously -- especially when Bioshock 2 is such a high-profile game.

The listing for a role as Level Designer states that "PlayStation 3 experience is required," while others don't mention specific platforms. 2K Boston was looking for PS3 programmers back before 2K Marin was formed. For all we know they might've snuck over to Marin to stay with the Bioshock license. Could this mean we could be seeing Bioshock 2 hit the PS3? It's a solid theory, given the evidence, but is far from proven. We played this "will it, won't it" game with Bioshock 1 last year, so until we hear confirmation we're letting the rumor lay out there for you guys to discuss.

Bioshock team looking for PS3 developers

2K Boston, the team behind the wildly success Bioshock, is looking for a number of PS3 programmers. "PS3 and production experience using Python or Ruby will be highly regarded" for the Tools Programmer position. "Experience with PS3 development is highly desirable." for the Senior Console Programmer position. "PlayStation3 experience highly desirable" for the Programmer position.

Something has us thinking that the 2K Boston team is making a PS3 game. Just call it a hunch. Of course, this is in stark contrast to previous rumors that they were avoiding PS3 altogether. Could the sequel to Bioshock be coming to PS3? Considering 2K's acquisition of the team, we say it's very likely.

Rumor: 2K Games Boston avoiding PS3 for next title

Not only does the PS3 not get Bioshock, yes that's right, we won't get it so let's ... let's stop those rumors already. We're sure the 360 fans roll their eyes at that just as much as we roll our eyes at MGS4 or FFXIII defection rumors. Anyway, depending how much you want to rely on an internet job listing, 2K Boston is working on their game and guess what? They don't list the PS3 as a platform for consideration -- just 360 and Windows.

Perhaps they already have all the help they need for the PS3 version of whatever it is, or they aren't planning to get involved with Sony yet. We don't know and since it is just a random job listing, we won't rule the possibility out yet, but we won't say anything to mislead you, either. Chances are, PS3 owners won't get any 2K Boston games anytime soon.

Really, there is no Bioshock for PS3

Like a frustrated mother, tired of the insistent yells of are we there yet, 2K Games has responded to the persistant rumors that a PS3 version of the critically acclaimed Bioshock are in the works. "There will be no PS3 version of BioShock. It has been explained time and time again."

The frustrated representative also quipped to the forum poster:
"Please don't tell me you made an account just for this question."

Maybe PS3 fans just have to ask 2K Games nicely: Would you kindly make Bioshock for the PS3? I'm sure they'd understand.

Bioshock PS3 rumour resurfaces

From the vault of rumours that won't die (no, not that one - that one is hopefully dead forever) comes, once again, the rumour of Bioshock coming to the PS3 sometime in 2008. While this was buried a few months ago the latest issue of EGM - and, in it, the newest Quartermann rumour predictions - has dug it back up and plans to rehabilitate it into mainstream debate.

We're not biting, however. There's no new evidence other than Mr. Quartermann's statement. We'd be happy to see it, but until we see some sort of proof we're firmly labeling this as the rumour it is.

Bioshock dev confirms: no PS3 version

In a recent phone call with Joystiq, Ken Levine, lead designer of Bioshock, confirmed that there is no PS3 version of Bioshock in the works: "I promise you, there is no secret plan about the PS3 that we're keeping from people. There's no PS3 development going on that we're hiding." Levine explains the mysterious reference to PS3 hidden in the game code, noting: "There's lots of stuff that gets into game code, plans change over time and we got an exclusive deal with Microsoft ... that's not a Rosetta Stone discovery."

It appears that although a PS3 version was considered at one point, Microsoft secured the game as a Xbox 360 and Games for Windows exclusive, most likely through the mesmerizing powers of cold, hard cash. A fantastic decision on Microsoft's part -- it currently has a Metascore of 97, making it an easy contender for Game of the Year accolades.

Bioshock PC demo config file hints strongly at a PS3 version

A member of the GameTrailers forum has found the best evidence so far that the critically acclaimed Bioshock will be coming to the PS3. While poking around in some of the config files for the demo, an interesting entry was stumbled upon:

[Console]
;; Console (XBox360, PS3) specific settings

;; StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit:
;; If this is a positive number, then instead of using the fixed per-level
;; limits, the StreamingDynamic resource will use as much memory as is
;; available as long as the total memory allocated by the game is less than
;; the specified number. In other words, StreamingDynamic will grow and
;; shrink to fit to the available memory instead of being locked to a fixed
;; budget
StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit=500

The file is locate at C:\Program Files\2K Games\BioShock Demo\Content and is called ConfigINI.IBF for anybody who wants to verify this on their own computers (we've verified it on ours). It will be interesting to see when 2k Games comes out and finally admits that Bioshock is coming to the PlayStation 3. Hopefully it will turn out to be a Q1 2008 release so we don't have to wait that long.

Rumor: Shocking revelations -- Bioshock coming to PS3 eventually [update 1]

The 360 game Bioshock looks awesome. We're not going to lie. In keeping with our not-lying policy, we're reporting on a report stemming from OPM UK. They say that Bioshock is indeed in development for the PlayStation 3. They don't even say it once. They say multiple times that the game, thought to be exclusive to 360, is in development for Sony's platform. Propaganda spread by the Official PlayStation Magazine, or truth?

It's a half-truth. The magazine claims the title isn't an exclusive, but a timed exclusive. If those who really want to play the game can wait the extra year, they'll get their Bioshock on the PS3. 2K Games will bring the title to all other consoles after a while on the 360. Are we excited? Sure. We aren't quite sure how long the exclusive will last on the 360, but estimating from other titles, it can be anywhere from a few months to an entire year. We'll keep you posted on the validity of these reports as they turn up.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

[Update: 2K Games has decided this rumor just ain't true, folks. For now. We've still got hope for an eventual port, however.]

RUMOR: Bioshock -- heading to PS3? You bet.

The UK version of the Official PlayStation Magazine may have leaked a story it shouldn't have. Normally, console exclusives have been moving away from the PS3, but this time the roles appear to have reversed. A previously 360 exclusive, Bioshock, has been "confirmed" to be on its way to the PS3 -- a few months after the 360 release. We don't have a copy of the magazine itself, but if you've got a copy, feel free to back up this news or shoot it down -- help us help you!

If this is true, that's great news! Even though many will say it's "just another 360 game being ported to the PS3," not everyone has a 360 nor are they willing to get one for a single game... or two games. Microsoft was so happy to claim this was a Microsoft exclusive (360, Vista), just as Sony was so happy to claim... what... there are a few, but let's say Assassin's Creed, as a Sony exclusive. Share the weath, Sony and Microsoft, and all will be gaming goodness.

[Thanks, AG!]
