Deal of the Day: Assassin's Creed for $30 at Circuit City online

Those of who were hesitating about Assassin's Creed may want to take a plunge with this deal, which takes 50% off the retail price of the game and includes free shipping. A look around shows the PS3 version of the game is still retailing for around $60 at online retailers. We've had the exact same deal before, so those of you who cursed the heavens when you missed it the first time around is getting a second chance.

[Thanks, Chris!]

Assassin's Solid is real

Do you remember back around the time of April Fool's seeing this video depicting Snake in an Altair costume? That was hilariously good fun. Of course, we all thought that was just a nicely played joke; however, it isn't a joke. It's reality. Gamers can actually put Snake in an Altair costume in Metal Gear Solid 4 as part of a collaboration with Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed. Does this mean we'll be seeing reciprocal costume exchanges in the next Creed adventure? Maybe.

This is just one of the many tie-ins revealed at today's MGS4 Completion Ceremony held in Japan. MGS4 is going all out with the advertising collaborations: celphones, iPods, motorcycles, and energy drinks. We just hope all this in-game advertising is subtle (it probably will be unless Snake starts flashing cheesy grins at the screen with product in hand). It's good to hear that the game is officially celebrated as done. Now, all we need to do is wait for June 12.

Deal of the Day: Assassin's Creed for $30

It's sad that some games have to be measured by the hotness of their producer and not by the sole merit of the game's inherent distinction. We're of course talking about Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed, an excellent title that had the interwebs chattering for all the wrong reasons.

If you were not one of the droves of morons drooling over Jade, then you actually listened to the news reports and would know that the game was fairly good with excellent visuals, and an alluring, original story. If you haven't picked this game up yet, then the 50% discount at 30 bucks is a good asking price to jump in. Go for it or not, that's your choice; however, just make sure that decision is based on the game itself and not on who's making it, okay?

[Thanks grief!]

Metal Gear Solid + Assassin's Creed: the video

What happens when you combine two of the most popular stealth games ever? Well, you get this. Enjoy this April Fools video, with an introduction by Jade Raymond herself. We won't mention spoilers, but there is also one other special guest at the end.

European PSN Updates for February 21st

Rut roh. Don't look now, but today's update is really rather bad. It's been a while since we've come out and said that a PSN update has been dire, because the quality has improved drastically over the last six months. Still, unless you're a fan of developer diaries, or demos that have been on the US Store for two weeks, then there's not a lot here for you. Here's the full release list:
It seems that SCEE have put Snakeball back on the front page, even though it came out in December. Our guess is it's their attempt to pad out today's update, but it hasn't really worked. Oh well, the long wait until next Thursday starts now.

Deal: Assassin's Creed, Kane & Lynch for $40 each

Ah, deals. They're either a blessing or a curse, depending on how you want to look at them. Sometimes they're just an undeniably awesome steal; at other times, they're a cleverly disguised way to rope you in on puchasing games you were previously borderline on getting. Throw in the fact that today's deal involves two somewhat politically controversial games in the realm of game journalism -- one more so over the other -- and there's more to it than meets the eye.

But enough of this unnecessary analysis! We're all about the numbers and the savings, right? Right. If anyone's still thinking of picking up either Assassin's Creed or Kane & Lynch and hasn't done so already, then Best Buy probably has the deal for you. Both games are on sale at $39.99; that's 20 bucks worth of savings, politics not included in the box.

PS3 Fanboy Gameflood: Assassin's Creed

This year has seen a hilarious amount of games sneak into PS3 Fanboy HQ. Like the great biblical flood, these games purged our minds of everything which came before and we were left floundering in a sea of quality games. Now that we've played them all we can finally sit down and review them - in short, opinion filled posts.

Assassin's Creed
is, for such a highly anticipated title, rather disappointing. That's not to say that, technically, the game is a masterpiece - it's just not particularly fun. With large, varied cities - all intricately detailed - the graphics and animation are first rate, even though it's clear that all the talented animators were put to work on Altair's in-game motions, leaving the lesser skilled animators to produce the cutscenes. Faces do look ugly and there's some silly clipping that could easily have been avoided.

Outside of the cutscenes, however, the animations are excellent and easily make the game's fun bits all the more aesthetically pleasing. These fun bits come in the form of freerunning across ancient cities and, even while the rest of the game has become dull and tiresome, you'll still garner some pleasure from outrunning pursuing guards and diving headfirst into a roof-garden to conceal yourself.

Patch coming for Assassin's Creed freezing problems

If you've been met with continual freezing while playing Assassin's Creed, never fear because Ubisoft is hard at work on an update to rectify the issue. It seems gamers are experiencing the freezing intermittently and not from the same point in the game.

"Following our recent statement regarding the freeze issues that some consumers are facing with Assassin's Creed on PlayStation 3, we can confirm that we are actively working on a game update," Ubisoft's UK community manager posted on its forums. "This update will help improve the stability of the game and will be released as soon as possible. In the meantime thank you for your ongoing feedback and patience."

It's great that Ubisoft is working on the fix so soon, but it's disappointing at the same time that gamers may have to wait weeks to be able to fully enjoy the game they spent their money on. These type of bugs should have been spotted and fixed long before the game was released to the public. Hopefully, Ubisoft says sorry by throwing us all some free downloadable content in addition to fixing the bug.

Guillemot says developing for PS3 is no harder than 360

Seems that talking up about the PlayStation 3's development process is in style -- first IO Interactive said how fun it was, now Ubisoft's own Yves Guillemot is claiming that it's no harder than programming a 360 title. Perhaps that's stretching it a little. Ubisoft is saying that, from a development standpoint, the two consoles can yield them equal results, working on the respective strengths of each console. In addition, he feels the rest of the year will be excellent for the PS3, with the price cut and lineup of good games.

As for the rumor that it costs a lot more to work on the PS3, well, it's still true, but not a major hike in price due to Ubisoft's complete cross-platform engine thingy. "What we do now is create for the PS3 and 360 at the same time, and it doesn't cost more than 10 per cent extra to develop for the other machine ... Before it was costing us more, about 20 per cent, just because it was difficult to learn the PS3 hardware, but now our engines are done and we can easily develop for both machines." Good stuff, we guess. Hopefully this means less delays for PS3 versions of games as well as equivalent gaming experiences.

Assassin's Creed PS3 skin only at Gamestop

Ever thought your PS3 was a bit ... bland? A bit boring? We're talking about the aesthetic quality of the box itself, not its functions or features. Frankly, we don't find ourselves staring at the machine long enough to really notice, but if you do then there are many ways that you can remedy the situation.

Gamestop is, from November 1st, offering a new Assassin's Creed skin. For a few weeks this will allow you to almost imagine that you have the game. "I have Assassin's Creed on PS3" you'll be able to say, without technically lying. The skin includes stickers which attach to the top and bottom of the PS3, so if you have your console sitting horizontally (as you should, really) then half of this skin just became moot. We're hoping that the stickers don't stay on permanently so that once the Assassin's Creed hype dies down you aren't stuck looking like you're stuck in the past.
