PS3 version of BioShock to be 'optimized' by Digital Extremes

Click for high-resolution image.

Usually, things go sour when the original developer of a game opts not to develop it for another platform. Case in point: the late-to-arrive EA-ported version of The Orange Box. A statement released by 2K Games reaffirms that development of the upcoming PS3 version of BioShock will be "assisted" by Digital Extremes (Unreal Championship, Dark Sector).

James Schmalz, CEO and founder of Digital Extremes had this to say in the press release: "You really can't ask for a more exciting, technically impressive world to work in than Rapture, and the incredible knowledge and talent between the 2K studios and our team at Digital Extremes is unprecedented. The collaboration on this project will make the PLAYSTATION 3 system sing with Big Daddy goodness and Little Sister 'thank you's'."

We're still hopeful for the PS3 version of this modern classic -- especially because it will reportedly have new content for PS3 owners. So long as this content isn't a "worse framerate," we'll be happy. We're counting on you Digital Extremes.

No trophy patches coming from Infinity Ward, Insomniac or 2K Games

After receiving word that Burnout Paradise creator Criterion Games and Uncharted's developer, Naughty Dog, were planning on supporting their games with trophies patches soon, we were getting quite optimistic about most games receiving the feature. Today, however, three developers have come out to say that they won't be doing so. Namely, Infinity Ward (Call of Duty 4), Insomniac (Resistance and Ratchet & Clank) and 2K Games (Civilization Revolution).

Both Infinity Ward and 2K Games posted the news on their forums, clearly stating that trophies will not be coming out for these titles. As for Insomniac, their Community Relations Manager, Bryan Intihar, responded to comments on the PlayStation Blog yesterday, stating that "currently, there are no plans to add trophies to R1 and RCF. Right now, our No. 1 focus is finishing R2 and making it the best game possible." If you're particularly optimistic, you can hope that they'll work on a patch after Resistance 2 is out. It would be nice, but we won't hold our breath.

Civilization Revolution demo on PSN this week

There will be a Civilization Revolution demo out this Thursday as part of this week's regularly scheduled PSN update. Since the title has been pushed back to July 8 instead of coming out on its original June 3 release, the folks at Firaxis and 2K Games thought it would be a good idea to give you something to play while waiting the extra month. The demo has two forces, Rome and Egypt. It also comes packed in with a tutorial for those new to the turn-based strategy game.

This demo sounds a lot like the one we've played previously, so perhaps you might want to read our hands-on impression to get ready for this Thursday. Also, if you're really interested in Civilization Revolution, then you better watch our video interview with the creator himself, Sid Meier.

'Bioshock on PS3' rumor finally confirmed true

After first appearing in February 2007, a full five months before the games release, the rumor that Bioshock would be coming to PS3 has been debunked and revived more times than we can count (and we can count quite high!). Now, however, the time for rumors is over as the cover of UK mag PSM3 has not only confirmed that the title will be made available for the PS3, but that it will be a somehow superior version of the game. We won't find out in what way until the magazine arrives on news stands on June 5th.

While it may be a few weeks before we get any details on what makes the PS3 version different, it's nice to finally get some closure regarding this confusing "will it, won't it" rumor. However, the game has been out for over six months now, so we're hoping for some significant changes in order to make the port worthwhile. Let's be honest here, most gamers have played this on the 360 and those who didn't have played it on the PC. Right?

PS3 Fanboy video interview: Sid Meier on Civ Revolution

It took us some time to get our footage from the New York Comic Con up onto the interwebs, but now that we have things running smooth as butter you'll be seeing more vids to come.

For starters, how about this interview with Sid Meier, the creator of the Civilization series. The man took time out of his busy schedule to give us an interview, answer our questions, and talk about the upcoming Civilization Revolution. We won't say much else, so we'll let Sid take it from here. Enjoy the interview!

If you're interested in more of Civilization Revolution, make sure you head on over to the official website.

PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution

Also at New York Comic Con this weekend, we headed over to 2K Games booth and tested out Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution. We went straight ahead into a single player game. Out of the 16 civilizations in the game, two were playable on the demo: Romans and Egyptians. We decided to take on the role of the powerful Roman Empire.

When we first kicked things off we noticed right away that the streamlined interface was an intuitive system; we easily shot straight into the natural flow of the game. Things go much faster in Civilization Revolution as compared to the traditional PC games as a lot of commands have been simplified. For example, workers are not controlled individually and automatically carry out preset commands. This is good as it cuts out tedious and repetitious actions within turns and lets you focus more on moving military units and defending your empire.

2K Marin job listing states that "PS3 experience is required"

This one is a bit confusing. We know 2K Marin are working on Bioshock 2 which, we assumed, would be a 360 exclusive like its big daddy brother. The cognitive water begins to get muddy, however, when we look at 2K Marin's job listings. While the jobs aren't necessarily for Bioshock 2, the game isn't due out until next year and we would be surprised if Marin are working on two titles simultaneously -- especially when Bioshock 2 is such a high-profile game.

The listing for a role as Level Designer states that "PlayStation 3 experience is required," while others don't mention specific platforms. 2K Boston was looking for PS3 programmers back before 2K Marin was formed. For all we know they might've snuck over to Marin to stay with the Bioshock license. Could this mean we could be seeing Bioshock 2 hit the PS3? It's a solid theory, given the evidence, but is far from proven. We played this "will it, won't it" game with Bioshock 1 last year, so until we hear confirmation we're letting the rumor lay out there for you guys to discuss.

Rumor: 2K Games Boston avoiding PS3 for next title

Not only does the PS3 not get Bioshock, yes that's right, we won't get it so let's ... let's stop those rumors already. We're sure the 360 fans roll their eyes at that just as much as we roll our eyes at MGS4 or FFXIII defection rumors. Anyway, depending how much you want to rely on an internet job listing, 2K Boston is working on their game and guess what? They don't list the PS3 as a platform for consideration -- just 360 and Windows.

Perhaps they already have all the help they need for the PS3 version of whatever it is, or they aren't planning to get involved with Sony yet. We don't know and since it is just a random job listing, we won't rule the possibility out yet, but we won't say anything to mislead you, either. Chances are, PS3 owners won't get any 2K Boston games anytime soon.

Really, there is no Bioshock for PS3

Like a frustrated mother, tired of the insistent yells of are we there yet, 2K Games has responded to the persistant rumors that a PS3 version of the critically acclaimed Bioshock are in the works. "There will be no PS3 version of BioShock. It has been explained time and time again."

The frustrated representative also quipped to the forum poster:
"Please don't tell me you made an account just for this question."

Maybe PS3 fans just have to ask 2K Games nicely: Would you kindly make Bioshock for the PS3? I'm sure they'd understand.
