Joystiq's Justin McElroy went to Capcom's CAPTIVATE event in Las Vegas to check out the most recent build of Resident Evil 5. "Right now, in the development process we're about 60 percent of the way through," producer Jun Takeuchi said through a translator. "We're figuring that the total play time in the game will be over 20 hours. As you can probably see from the trailer there's a lot of different content and materials in the game for you to enjoy."

A major addition to the gameplay has yet to be revealed, but according to McElroy, the game looks like a very polished version of Resident Evil 4 -- not that that's a bad thing, of course. The Gamecube action game remains a modern classic. Do you remember the new female character seen in Famitsu scans? She's guided by AI when playing solo, but like in Army of Two, if you're online, anyone can jump in at any time and play some co-op with you.

Also revealed to return is the "Mercenaries" mini-game from Resident Evil 4. A few more features/tweaks were mentioned as well: still no strafing, but a cover system has been implemented so you can press against walls and/or shoot around corners. You can now also dodge and duck using the right analog stick.

Stop now if you don't want to read any spoilers at all about the game. We don't want to write them, but we feel obligated to. Consider a small part of us dying as we type these. The game takes place in a small African country near a line of active volcanoes stretched across Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Volcanic activity is what unleashes the virus upon the masses. Classic characters abound -- Sherry Birkin and Albert Wesker have been confirmed -- with playable flashbacks to fill in some story bits otherwise untold.

Look for the game in 2009, the preview concludes. We said it would be out in fiscal year '08, which goes into March of '09. So, look for the game in March. Then delayed to September. Just kidding!

[via 1UP]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Prototype video displays parkour, body consumption

Filed under: Previews, Videos and Screenshots

Oh my! We have a great video of Prototype to show you, but it is rated Mature, so we have to put it after the jump. The game, blending ideas from Assassin's Creed and Knights of the Old Republic and Grand Theft Auto and any number of similar sandbox and choose-your-destiny games, Prototype does still appear quite intriguing. Joystiq wrote up an impressive preview of the game for your enjoyment, so don't forget to look at what they said. Basically, the game is good but difficult to judge from a quick impression. We'll see if the game lives up to expectations when it hits later this year.

%Gallery-12819%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

What's new in PixelJunk Monsters Encore?

First and foremost, Q Games' Dylan Cuthbert said before this PixelJunk Monsters expansion would be released sooner rather than later. It is so. The expansion is due out sometime in April. That's pretty quick, especially if you spent last night with a friend getting perfect scores on every single map in the original. But anyway, what's new in Encore, the expansion?

A new island, Toki Island, is available with 15 new missions. The maps for the missions look quite experimental and different from much of the original island (Tiki Island). At the beginning of missions, you'll now have instant access to the mostly-useless Ice Tower. The cost of the Tesla Tower has decreased to only 10 jewels. You'll have to earn the abilities from the original game again (like running, land mine, et cetera). There's also a strange little bonus island whose purpose is unknown right now. There are also five new music tracks. We're excited, but until we get word of the final build, that's all we know for now.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Arc System Works unveils another fighter: Battle Fantasia

A while back we showed you some screenshots of another of Arc System Works' upcoming games, BlazeBlue (translation isn't perfect, but it'll do). Now Arc System Works is taking a stab at another 2D fighting game, this one more in the cutesy, Arcana Hearts style -- except you can play as more than little girls. Details are scarce, as this new game, dubbed Battle Fantasia, has just been revealed in Famitsu, but it seems there are some kind of HP and MP gauges. A story mode and online mode will be available for the PS3 and 360 when the game releases in May ... in Japan. Who knows if we'll see it stateside, but remember, PS3 games are region free.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Resistance 2: the single-player campaign is basically finished

Insomniac Games' Resistance 2 has hardly been announced, and already we're getting a flood, nay, a wealth of information on the title. In this 1UP feature, we learn a lot about the state of the game and much to our surprise, the road to completion is not too far away. The feature mainly summarizes what we've learned so far about the different modes of play, the size of the online matches, the basic storyline and the enemies we'll encounter. We'll highlight some of the more important bits.

First off, new enemies. Enhanced Chimera with more form-fitting battle armor, because even aliens need to be fashionable and destructive. Boss battles will return, probably in response to some of Halo 3's gigantic monstrosities -- one enemy towers 150ft above protagonist Nathan Hale. The single-player maps are, surprisingly, more or less complete and running in a rough state. Amazing that the game is technically "done" but not "cooked". It's like buying the turkey -- you still have to marinate and roast it. But the turkey is there. The game's difficulty will change depending on you and your teammates' skill level. There's more, but really, you should read for yourself to see what piques your interest -- and prevents us from revealing too much without your consent.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Faith and a .45 devs toss their ideas around about the game

Earlier we introduced you to a new game on the rise from Denmark developers Deadline Games called Faith and a .45 -- a Bonnie and Clyde type of tale. Cross-country mayhem, crooked cops, you know. 1UP has gotten a more in-depth preview of the game and we're pretty interested in what was covered. You control Luke, with Ruby as your AI-controlled partner -- but a second player online or offline can take control of her at any time. The two work dynamically: if Luke does a good job, Ruby will offer him a kiss for a job well done (and if he dies but Ruby lives, she'll give him a kiss that magically brings him back to life). Other cooperative moves were mentioned, but it's up to you to read them.

A sheriff named Duke plays a role sort of like Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 -- constantly hunting down the protagonists on their journey across the country. Boss battles will exist, but come in the form of a tank or an area swamped with well-trained baddies instead of one super-powered gun-toting maniac. You can upgrade your weapons, puzzles will be physics-based (sorry, wooden box puzzle lovers) and a narrative that goes beyond scripted cut-scenes. Perhaps branching stories based on your choices, but the early development cycle allows the devs to figure all that out later. It's a 2009 or 1

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

BlazeBlue: 2D fighting lives on the PS3

One thing to mention before we continue -- this game is by Arc System Works, the genius designers behind the Guilty Gear franchise. Their new game, BlazeBlue, seems to take a lot of nods from that series. Both appear to be in amazing 2D, both have similar character designs, and both will probably drive you crazy with the amount of stuff happening at once. BlazeBlue, however, is apparently exclusive to the PS3.

The person who uploaded the Famitsu scans, KingJ2002, claims the game actually follows Guilty Gear XX, taking place ten years after that title. We think that's hogwash. If anyone can read Japanese, let us know if this is accurate or not. We'll pretend it's a new game built with different mechanics in place so there's a new way to play 2D fighters. Check out the scans over at NeoGAF at tell us what you think!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Deadline Games announce Faith and a .45

Denmark might not be known for their video game development houses, but after reading up on Deadline Games' upcoming title Faith and a .45, we're going to take notice. This shooter is going to take on an original story from the times of the Great Depression -- think Bonnie and Clyde, but with different characters.

Deadline is touting the game as an epic cross-country story with a focus on characters, co-op gameplay, storytelling and cinematic aesthetics. Whatever. We just want to shoot stuff and have a decent story to accompany it, right? That seems to be their goal, too. More details will emerge at GDC, but until then, know that Deadline Games "values original stories, settings and characters very highly." Sorry in advance -- no new images. We usually try to stay away from spoiling story elements, but in the world of FFXIII we've come to understand that the rebellion against the Cocoon is led by Lightning, the only character we've heard of so far.

The other person we've seen, but haven't been introduced to, is the guy with the blond hair who looks like a mix between Seifer and Cloud (seen in the last new trailer). He has unclear motives for us, the player. We're not told if he's on Lightning's side or not for a long time -- so perhaps he's a villain instead of an ally. Who knows?

An aspect of the game we haven't heard about previously is a type of "split-screen" that shows different characters in different places at the same time. Speculation is that the split-screen function is for cut-scenes, but we think it'll play a slightly more prevalent role. We have no idea what -- it's just our speculation. What think you, masses?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New MLB '08: The Show trailer glistens with excellence

Filed under: Previews, Videos and Screenshots

It's really interesting to see sports titles, generally rehashed year by year with minor improvements, finally take the plunge into the latest batch of consoles. 1UP has a pretty in-depth preview of Silent Hill 5 up which should dispel any misgivings you might have about the game's western development. Due for a fall '08 release the game seems to be coming along quite nicely and 1UP got a nice chunk of juicy details out of the developers.

For starters, Silent Hill 5 will be a standalone adventure with a separate story and new characters. The game still promises to be a part of the Silent Hill canon, however, and not just in name. Some series mainstays are back, including the crawling fog, levels that transform from light and airy to grime covered and bloody and a permanent grain filter over the action. All of these things have been improved on for the next generation of consoles.

New features will also be implemented into SH5, such as utilisation of the Havok physics engine to allow furniture to be accidentally knocked, alerting your enemy of where you are. The battle system will also have an overhaul, making combat a bigger part of the game than in previous iterations of the series. For the full lowdown on the game be sure to check out 1UP's preview for plenty more SH5 info.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New Metal Gear Solid 4 footage details some of the new weaponry

Filed under: Previews, Videos and Screenshots

If you've been looking for some Metal Gear Solid 4 footage, you may have stumbled upon the above footage from the English demo. If not, enjoy. Back at TGS, Hideo Kojima said there would be about 70 weapons in the game and the new demo shows many of those new weapons in action. It also shows Snake in a variety of, uh, situations where the weapons come in handy. What happens if you run out of ammo? Some tweaks to the game have been made -- the character looks a bit different (but still a bit generic), and you've a weapon that lets you move the land without using ammo. But it's not as cool. There's a new weapon called the Black Widow that lets you shoot and detonate up to six charges whenever you want. A new stage set in San Francisco was shown, but really, just watch the new video and make your own call.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

LittleBigPlanet updates with new tentative release date

Filed under: Previews, Videos and Screenshots, PlayStation Network

We all know homebrew gaming is coming to the PS3, most notably through Media Molecule's own LittleBigPlanet. We've come to learn the game is slated for a September release for now, but what else is new with the game? We've got some cute information for you to digest. Unless, of course, you don't like fluff.

The emotions for your characters, called Sackboys (Sackpeople if you want to be PC about it), are controlled with the D-pad and seem to have a wider array than previously noted. Facial contortions indicate the style of body gestures your character will do. Kind of neat. You can move into and out of the background now -- no more left-to-right only limitations. You can leave little items in the levels, too, like a leaf texture or something, to add to your personal inventory. The currency in the game was once Sponge, but now called Fluff -- it looks like marshmallows in a variety of colors.

How about creating your own levels? It's pretty tough to imagine something when you're greeted by a giant white screen. No worries -- the game will come with several pre-rendered levels like a desert scene that will give you a better place to start. Parental controls and a user-created level rating system to control R-rated content is in the works. When we hear more, we'll let you know, but it's shaping up to be something special.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Welcome to the show; MLB '08 The Show

Filed under: Previews, Videos and Screenshots

Sure, baseball is under fire in America currently due to some kind of "performance enhancer" or whatever, but that doesn't mean we can't look forward to creating our own superhero of a sportsman in MLB '08: The Show. We've got two trailers for you today and since we don't have sports games featured here that often -- you're welcome. Enjoy the second one after the jump!

Titled, who would've thought, Just Cause 2, will carry on the surprisingly decent legacy the first sandbox title delivered to fans. Lead designer Peter Johansson explained the process in creating the second title: "We identified the key areas we wanted to improve for Just Cause 2. We wanted to make better use of our huge game world, enhance the stunts, improve the combat and reward exploration more." Sometimes more is better.

You still play as Rico Rodriguez, but your setting has changed from the island of San Esperitio to an undisclosed (for now) location in Southeast Asia. Another shift from the original title is the complete dismissal of side-missions. This might make the game different enough from the clogged sandbox market to stand out, or it might make it terribly short and rather mediocre. We'll see the game on PS3, 360, and PC at an unspecified date.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

MLB 08 may be the most features-packed baseball game ever

Click for high-resolution image.

Seriously, Sony's upcoming MLB 08 may have the longest list of features we've ever seen for a game, regardless of genre. The massive fact sheet released today has us scratching our heads in bewilderment, so much so that we simply had to provide you the entire list (after the break). Highlights include the ability to add your own custom soundtrack, online integration with MLB.com, and online stats tracking that will match players with similarly skilled opponents.

The game will be available on PS3, PS2 and PSP this Spring. Check out the first PS3 images in our new gallery.

%Gallery-11641%
Monsters! Monsters with silly pig noses that we want transformed into stuffed animals right this moment. From the makers of PixelJunk Racers comes the aptly titled PixelJunk Monsters -- Q-Games has given up a few pieces of concept art and some details on the game, which we'll spill to you below.

PJ Monsters is basically an RTS game with some additional elements set alongside the mining, research, and building bits we've all come to understand through the years. There's no mouse cursor for you to play God with -- you play as a cuddly monster creature that runs around and collects the materials you need to research and build stuff. Enemy monsters can drop gems, used to research more advanced defenses and buildings and such. These can also be upgraded by doing a dance in front of each respective tower. Neat.

There are online leaderboards for co-op and single player campaigns. Apparently the game supports voice chat, unless co-op is restricted to you and a physical buddy next to you. What's super cool: girls like the game, too. Girlfriend tired of watching you play Uncharted or finds no fun in Call of Duty 4? You two should enjoy this one together, so says Dylan Cuthbert. Expect the game to have more fantastic hand-drawn 2D art, hitting the PS Store in January.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
