ThreeSpeech has the scoop on when we can expect Siren: Blood Curse to hit the European PSN Store, as well as how much we will be spending on this episodic horror. We're not sure what Sony's understanding of "episodic" is, but we were expecting something a little bit different to what's been described. Siren will be split into four chapters, each containing three episodes of the game, but the strange part is that all four chapters will be made available on the same day -- July 24th.

I guess we can't complain now that we know we won't have to wait in between episodes, but we can't help but wonder why they've bothered with splitting the game up at all. Why not just release it all as one? When the game releases you'll be able to pick up each chapter for £4.99 (no sign of a price in Euros, sorry!), with all four chapters bundled together for £19.99. Pro tip: Buy them all separately and you'll save 3p. That's three penny sweets!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

American PSN updates for July 3rd

Filed under: New Releases, PlayStation Store, News

This week's PSN Store update is truly Euro-centric. Not only do we have the first episode of the Europe-exclusive "PSN TV Show" Movement, but there's also four packs of Buzz! Quiz TV content available to purchase. Movement's first episode is split into eight videos, including four live performances from the two featured Parisian bands. If you actually want to play something today, however, there's always Wolf of the Battlefield Commando 3. Here's the full release list:

Playable content

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 Full Game (£6.99/€9.99)

Space Invaders Extreme demo for PSP (free)

On closer inspection, there appear to be more Buzz! Quiz TV quiz packs than we thought. Each country should have a "Culture" pack corresponding to their particular region.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

2.40 includes hidden PSN Store upgrade

The new look PSN Store is definitely something to behold, even if we've mostly gotten used to what it looks like by now. Unfortunately, it suffered from not caching images properly and, as a result, slow loading of items on the store. If you're someone who's particularly annoyed by this, then you'll be happy to hear that firmware 2.40 seems to have brought with it a little surprise which makes the store run a lot smoother. This is true of both the US and the EU stores.

Not only that, but a new "view mode" has been added to both, so now you can have the store items laid out in more of a list form, rather than just an image. Not only does this make it easier to see what each item is at a glance, but it also shows the price, even if the item is not highlighted. This is definitely our preferred method of viewing the store. If we find any more 2.40 surprises, we'll be sure to let you know.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Crüefest Rock Band DLC next week

Next week's DLC for Rock Band will have a Crüefest flavor to it. In honor of the late July event, three tracks (and only one of them actually from Mötley Crüe themselves) have been bunched up into a nicely packaged pack. A fourth song is also planned; this one is a free download. The song is titled "Promised Land" by Vesuvius and comes from the film The Rocker.

The three Crüefest Pack songs are "Down At The Whisky" by Mötley Crüe, "Time Is Running Out" by Papa Roach, and "Who's Going Home With You Tonight" by Trapt. The Crüefest pack costs $2.99 altogether and, as usual, you can buy them individually for 99 cents. And, if we haven't already made it clear, "Promised Land" is free ... or will cost you only the electricity and internet service for the seconds it will take you to download the song. Variety's video games reporter Ben Fritz looked into Sony's announcement yesterday about their video download service; turns out Sony has been in talks with all the major movie studios, but none have signed onto the PS3 download service just yet. It seems that Sony is looking to compete with Xbox Live Video Marketplace by adding extra features, such as allowing the owner of the download to transfer a copy of the movie to their PSPs, similar to their plans for Blu-ray. However, more features means more complicated contracts with studios, possibly leading to less content for the video download service on launch date. Fritz feels that if the PS3 download service has the same or better features as Xbox Live, it won't have problems getting major studios to participate.

Sony does have at least one studio backing it up though, and that is Sony Pictures. If they can convince just one other studio to sign on, they will have the same amount of studios Xbox Live Video market place had when it begin at the end of 2006. What do you guys think? Should Sony opt for more features, but have less content at launch? Or should they forget about the features and get as many studios to sign on as possible?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

American PSN Store update for June 26th

Just in case you can't stand the few hours wait until the Metal Gear Solid Database is made available on the US Store (or, in case you're European), we're here to let you know that it's ready to download right now for those with Japanese accounts. The 77mb Database download includes Japanese, English and a few European languages, so don't worry about having to combat any language barriers.

The Metal Gear Solid Database contains info on all the canonical games from the series (Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4 and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops), including a timeline of events, character relationship diagrams and an encyclopedia of terms, places and people. To protect those that have yet to finish MGS4, all spoilerish information from the game is blacked out until the Database locates a completed MGS4 save file.

For a preview of the Database, check out Siliconera.

[Thanks, Mike!]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

European PSN update for June 19th

Filed under: New Releases, PlayStation Store, News

We've known that PSN cards have been around for awhile now at select gas stations and areas near military forts and bases across the United States. Now, it looks like the cards are making another step towards more direct and wide scale distribution. American superstore Meijer is selling the cards this month and some people are already picking them up. Reader Mana Knight sends us pics of the cards in one of Meijer's stores. He was able to purchase one and use it.

Meijer branches are located in only a few states: Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. So if you live in any one of those places, you could probably find the PSN cards in your local Meijer. For everyone else, it looks like it might still be awhile; however, the fact that the cards are appearing at a major retailer points to steady progression. Will we see the cards in even bigger chains nationwide by the end of summer?

[Thanks Mana Knight!]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

American PSN update for June 12th

Filed under: New Releases, PlayStation Store, News

Just in case you need something to supplement your Metal Gear Solid 4 sessions, the PSN has been updated with plenty of playable, add-on and video content. There's loads to choose from here, including the first PS1 game to be released on the US Store for quite a while. Is there anything here that's really going to pull you away from MGS4? Didn't think so. Here's the full release list:

Playable content

We've been used to getting more from SCEE over the last few weeks, so this update may seem a bit small. Considering most people will be busy playing Metal Gear Solid 4 and Metal Gear Online for the next few weeks (at least), we don't particularly mind. Despite that, there are two demos and an add-on pack for Guitar Hero III, so it's not a complete wash. Here's the full release list:

Playable content

Another pleasing update. Demos, add on packs and PS1/PSP games are always welcome. We didn't really expect to see the God of War Guitar Hero III pack arriving in Europe before the US. As for Toy Home: Second Gear, that's a nice little surprise as well. Okay SCEE, let's call it quits. Keep this up and we'll have nothing to complain about. Regular PS1 titles and content hitting on the same day as the US Store is exactly what we've been after for the last year. The lack of NovaStrike is unsurprising, but it'll be with us next week, right SCEE?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Civilization Revolution demo on PSN this week

There will be a Civilization Revolution demo out this Thursday as part of this week's regularly scheduled PSN update. Since the title has been pushed back to July 8 instead of coming out on its original June 3 release, the folks at Firaxis and 2K Games thought it would be a good idea to give you something to play while waiting the extra month. The demo has two forces, Rome and Egypt. It also comes packed in with a tutorial for those new to the turn-based strategy game.

This demo sounds a lot like the one we've played previously, so perhaps you might want to read our hands-on impression to get ready for this Thursday. Also, if you're really interested in Civilization Revolution, then you better watch our video interview with the creator himself, Sid Meier.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Yep, Shiki-tei is indeed a garden simulator for the PS3

Filed under: PlayStation Store, PlayStation Network, News

Don't be confused by our snarky subject line. The garden simulator for the PS3, titled Shiki-tei (four seasons garden), goes on sale on the PlayStation Network at the end of June for approximately 1,600 yen. It probably won't leave Japan, but just in case we'll tell you a little about it.

You plant a garden. It's a very relaxing game where you can plant flowers, trees, place stones and more until you get your perfect garden to stare at and relax with. When it's finished, you can watch cherry blossoms fall and listen to whatever music you've got on the PS3. It's basically a "Create-Your-Own" music visualizer.

You can also snap pictures of your garden and share them with friends. Garden trading card game? Bring it on. There will probably be add-on items to purchase for the game, but as SiliconEra put it, this would benefit more as an expansion to the apartment creation aspect of PlayStation Home.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

American PSN update for May 29th

Yeah, we hope you weren't getting too excited about today's PSN update. There's very little here, again. Interestingly, Europe has recently been getting far better content than their yank cousins and this week is no exception. Here's the full release list:

Add-on Content

Rock Band DLC (detailed after the jump)

Videos

Top Spin 3 Debut Trailer

Battlefield: Bad Company: Developer Diary - Characters

Battlefield: Bad Company: Sweetwater's Blog

Dead Space Animated Comic Issue #1

Project Origin Teaser

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Projectile Dysfunction

Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Human Juicer Video

Enchanted Blu-ray trailer

No Country for Old Men Blu-ray trailer

Wallpaper

Prince of Persia Arabesque

Prince of Persia New Prince

Apart from a couple of those trailers, only the Rock Band DLC is worth grabbing. If you fancy trying out Fatal Inertia there's a demo on the Japanese PSN Store that's entirely in English. That might be worth checking out.
Rock Band DLC this week is as follows:

The Cars album ($15) -- All songs are also sold individually ($2)

"Good Times Roll"

"My Best Friend's Girl"

"Just What I Needed"

"I'm in Touch with Your World"

"Don't Cha Stop"

"You're All I've Got Tonight"

"Bye Bye Love"

"Moving in Stereo"

"All Mixed Up"

That WipEout HD is taking its sweet time, isn't it? While Fatal Inertia may have got pretty bad reviews when it came out on the 360, the fact that it is getting improvements made for the PS3 version makes it almost tempting. Not to mention the fact that it'll be made available via the PSN Store for only $30. A demo is available right now from the Japanese PSN Store, along with the full game.

MTV Multiplayer made it known that Fatal Inertia EX would be available by the end of the month, so don't be surprised to see it on the American PSN Store later today. With still no concrete release date for WipEout HD, will Fatal Inertia EX tempt you into a purchase? Probably not, we suspect.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

European PSN updates for May 29th

Between Puzzle Fighter, Rayman and Medievil Resurrection, we're going to have a busy weekend. As for those Prince of Persia wallpapers from Ubidays, the art style is so gorgeous we're almost tempted to have them replace Snake as our XMB backdrop. Almost. We can't believe we're saying it, but keep up the good work, Sony!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Army of Two map pack delayed for Americans

Okay, stay with us for this one. Remember that Veteran Map Pack for Army of Two that's due out tomorrow? It's been delayed. At least, it has in America. In a strange twist of fate Europeans will see it arrive on the PSN Store tomorrow as planned while their cousins across the pond will have to wait a while before getting their hands on it. There's no word on when it will be available in America, but hopefully it should be up next week.
