[Update: Apparently, this was today. Thanks, Paul!]

You guys wanna make a bet? We think the above shown Mobil gas station was the most popular gas station in Los Angeles today. EA is hosting an event to promote Mercenaries 2 called "Petrol to the People, For Free!" that gave free gas away today at 6 AM until the pumps dried up. Fuel is a central element to Mercenaries 2 story, where players use gas to obtain weapons and supplies, as well as playing at integral part in the story. Additionally, the station was redecorated Mercenaries style and the attendants weredressed up as Mercenaries handing out information about the game.

So where would you have gone take advantage of this free gas giveaway? 8489 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90048. For those of us who missed it , watch the action from today with videos at Break.com.

%Gallery-30600%

Looks like Halloween might be coming a little early for some of you. The surivor-horror title Dead Space, which uses the PS3 as the lead platform, was originally set to debut in the United Kingdom on October 31st. It has been pushed up to October 24th, which is United Nations Day. Is that a day to be afraid of too?

The American release date has also been confirmed yet again. We always knew it would be at the end of October, but EA kept changing up the dates on us. First it was Halloween, then it was the 28th, and now finally they have decided on an October 21st release date. Check out the gallery below or preorder the game here.

[Via Joystiq]
%Gallery-25378%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hong Kong gamers can spend their way into Home beta

In Hong Kong or Singapore and want to take part in the Home beta? Just spend $60 HKD ($7.69) or $12 SGD ($8.48) on one single purchase off the PLAYSTATION Store before September 12th and you've secured your spot.
Don't feel like spending money? SCEH have 100 spots available for those who fill out an online registration form here. We are guessing they'd rather you spend some money at the PS Store, as 100 spots ain't too many to go around.

Note that, the Home beta will only be in Tradition Chinese in Hong Kong while in Singapore the language will only be English. Finally, local newspapers and magazines will have a third unspecified method of gaining entry. However, information on which publications remain undisclosed at this time.

Some have been complaining lately that the PS3 is lacking in JRPGs, but most people forget that White Knight Story was mentioned in a Sony presentation as a game that will launch this fiscal year ending in April 2009. All we have from the PS3-exclusive Level-5 RPG thus far has been infrequent updates of screenshots and concept illustrations. But a tease on the official websites at Sony Japan and Level-5 tells us that's all about to change: "The days of wakening are coming soon." (translation courtesy of PS3Hyper) Speculation range from an announcement at Tokyo Game Show or some information in an upcoming issue of Famitsu.
Due to "unforeseen technical difficulties," the planned Moving Pictures album by Rush won't be arriving this week -- it looks like it might take a couple of weeks to fix.
Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono sat down with Videogamer to talk about the console versions of the latest incarnation of the classic fighting game series. He had a ton of information to share, and here are some highlights:

Ono recognizes lag as a series problem for online play. They are working on a solution which involves "trying to balance it up at user interface level and input timing by using joystick or something like that." We don't really know what that means either.

Parrying is gone, in case you didn't know already. Ono wants "Street Fighter IV to be a tool for everyone to enjoy" and parrying is "quite hard for the vast majority to master."

There will be a story/adventure mode on the console versions.

There won't be any specific console-exclusive characters, meaning we won't have to buy multiple versions of the game just to play them all. (Editor's note: Yay!) However, there will be characters, such as Cammy, who will appear in the console versions but not the arcade versions.

In an interview with Die Welt, Sony CEO Howard Stringer tells the German newspaper he believes Sony captured the casual audience before Nintendo did. "We held the same target group with the Singstar karaoke game. But perhaps we neglected to pursue that avenue." He admits that PlayStation titles target hardcore gamers. "Playstation games are rather designed for those who play a lot. Although it's a different strategy, it pays off. We currently have a production bottleneck with the PlayStation 3 ... Consumers are purchasing our PlayStation 3 video game consoles faster than we can produce them." Stringer also doesn't see Nintendo as a rival. "The Wii is not succeeding at our expense - it is not hurting us. We decided years ago to build a game console that offers much greater functionality."

Stringer confesses that the $3,000,000,000 spent on the PS3, discounting R&D, will take a long while to recuperate. Though Sony is still losing money on hardware, the CEO informs us that the amount they are making with software is greater than the lost they suffer with hardware. Finally, he doesn't think they will be a price cut for the PS3 before Christmas.

With games like the recently announced Eyepet, it seems like Sony at least wants in on some of that casual gamer action that Nintendo has been getting. Another point to ponder is, should Sony reconsider their strategy of selling a system with such huge losses the next time around? Or will the PS3 make back all the money it lost in the beginning, just like the PS2?

[Via Maxconsole]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Rock Band 2 full albums: Foo Fighters, Megadeth plus more

MTV Games, via Entertainment Weekly, has unveiled the six upcoming downloadable albums for Rock Band 2. Each one is suppose to a "seminal full album" by each artist:

"The Colour and the Shape" -- Foo Fighters

"Blood Sugar Sex Magik" -- Red Hot Chili Peppers

"Nothing's Shocking" -- Jane's Addiction

"Peace Sells ... But Who's Buying" -- Megadeth

"Texas Flood" -- Stevie Ray Vaughn

The last one will be a "specially-compiled No Doubt Best Of collection." No release dates have been announced, but they are expected to arrive "in the coming months." Lastly, according to this blogger, if one was forced to pick a "seminal" Red Hot Chili Peppers album, that honor should belong to One Hot Minute.

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

EyePet benefited from Eight Days and Getaway cancellations

The adorable debut of EyePet at Leipzig Games Convention was quite possibly the biggest surprise of the show. The innovative use of the PlayStation Eye, coupled with one of fthe most adorable creature designs in recent memory, made it one of the most high-profile titles we showcased on our site during the Convention. Although it's still not planned for a release late next year, it benefited from the controversial cancellations of other SCEE games, such as Eight Days and The Getaway.

"Yes, there are so many things that we want to do, more than we can do with the resources. So when London Studio was looking at the early work on EyePet and the prototype of Eight Days, they knew they couldn't do all of them - and there are even more things they're working on at early concept stage," Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told GI.biz. "So your expertise and ideas are best spent on some titles rather than others."

London Studios is arguably best known for their work on SingStar and other PS2/PS3 Eye games. Their experience in casual games developent will undoubtedly help EyePet. "London Studio is really best-placed for showing how these things can be done, because they've worked on games in that space for many years - they know how consumers are going to react, how to make it accessible and fun."

%Gallery-30069%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Itagaki says PS3 development easier than Famicom

According to former Tecmo employee and Team Ninja leader Tomonobu Itagaki (Dead or Alive series, Ninja Gaiden Sigma), developing for the PS3 is easy-peasy.
Maybe it's just us, but Sackboy here seems to get cuter by the minute. Those of you who crave a more hands-on experience should order their copy of LittleBigPlanet from Circuit City, where the preorder bonus will be an exclusive sticker book, with real physical stickers. If you've been meaning to pick up Soulcalibur IV -- which was released about a month ago -- but have yet to, then perhaps you've been waiting for that demo that was promised. If you find yourself in with that crowd, perhaps getting some playtime with the newly released demo off the Japanese PS Store will tickle your fancy.

The demo, which is completely in English, weighs-in at about 879MB. It'll allow players to fight a few rounds as either Cassandra (pictured getting whacked in the head) or Nightmare (not pictured). For those of you who want to check out the weapon-clashing blades of SC IV, log into your Japanese accounts and download it. For those of you who don't have a Japanese account and are not in a rush, there's a pretty big chance of seeing the demo on your local PS Store update tomorrow.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Really, really big robots invading Dynasty Warrios: Gundam sequel

The Japanese adore all that is Gundam and Dynasty Warriors. So it wasn't long before someone decided to mash these two ideas together, which resulted in last year's Dynasty Warriors: Gundam (a.k.a. Gundam Musou in Japan).

It looks like Koei is bringing us another installment of the series named, you guessed it, Gundam Musou 2. Though more or less the same hack-and-slash affair, the sequel will predictably contain more robots, new attacks, new special moves and more weapons. A new story mode brings a playable version of the first original Gundam theatrical release Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Lastly, mobile armors that are ten times the size of your mech will serve as some of the game's bosses. Mobile armors confirmed to be in the game include the MA-08 Big Zam from Mobile Suit Gundam and the NZ-333 Alpha Azieru from Char's Counterattack. For more details on this game, check out 1UP.

Release date is pegged for this winter in Japan for the price 7,800 yen. No release dates for other regions have been announced for the time being.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Afrika teams up with Japanese hotel chain to create pseudo-safari experience

We love bizarre Japanese promotions, like this one between Sony Computer Entertainment and Tokyu Hotels. During the month of September, they'll have a special campaign which starts at 19,000 yen. Special Afrika-themed rooms will include a special projector screen displaying high-resolution images from the upcoming PS3 safari game. A special exotic meal will be prepared and delivered to your room as you enjoy the digitally rendered African environment from the PS3. At the very least, this beats having to stay in a boring non-Afrika themed room, right?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Joystiq has a LittleBigChat at Leipzig

Joystiq's Leipzig coverage continues with an interview with LittleBigPlanet developer Jim Unwin and producer Pete Smith. They discuss the game's humble beginnings at GDC 2007, post-launch add-on content and ... did he just say "we could brick someone's PS3"? LittleBigPlanet is shaping up to be the game everyone is hoping for and we're getting hyped all over again. Just over two months to go and it'll be in our grubby little paws. Warhawk has once again been patched up with more free goodies. Simply load up the game and you will be asked to download the 66MB 1.50 patch. At the moment we can only confirm this for Europe, but a US patch should also be made available today, if it's not already. In case you've forgotten what version 1.50 adds to the game (you big sillies), let us refresh your memory.

A new training mode, to get people used to the game, custom soundtracks and trophies are the main new features, but there's plenty more besides. In a game like LittleBigPlanet, sharing user generated content is a big part of the experience. Ever more so, protecting one's personal creations is going to be an even bigger issue. With players expected to swap content daily, one has to wonder how will players control the distribution of unique content in the do-it-yourself platformer?

The answer is that the game will utilize a simple system called "copyright" which is not the same as the legal sense. Players can "copyright" objects which are collectibles in their levels; copyright items can be used by the people who've collected them, but they won't be able to alter your content or give it away to others. Non-copyright items can be edited and shared freely by anyone. Additionally, you can control who is allowed to use your levels by setting a difficulty rating and/or giving away invite keys.

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Team ICO has a fan in Pan's Labyrinth director

You know you've got an iconic piece of artistry when an Academy Award winning filmmaker has nothing but praise, respect, and admiration to show. "There are only two games I consider masterpieces: Ico and Shadow of the Colossus," said Guillermo del Toro in an interview with Edge magazine. Both titles are creations of SCEJ's Team ICO, who are currently working on an unnamed title.

Guillermo, director of the widely acclaimed Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies, is himself a gamer since the Pong era. He's even a video game director, having worked with Konami on adapting the Hellboy series ... which unfortunately didn't do too well.

With such a prominent figure giving the thumbs up to Team ICO, we're sure they're happy to hear that their hard work is getting noticed outside the realm of gaming. We're also sure, whatever they have in store next would probably be pleasing del Toro -- and us for that matter.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Set course for Savage Moon this Fall

Filed under: PlayStation Network, e-Distribution Games, News

Not really announced per se, Savage Moon was shown off at the Leipzig Game Convention during a sizzle trailer at SCEE's press conference. Now, the PlayStation Blog, has more details on the game. This PSN downloadable title is a tower defence game, but set in a "gritty sci-fi" environment, so it will have a very different feel to PixelJunk Monsters, though the gameplay will be similar.

It'll be out this Autumn, along with a whole host of other PSN titles such as Crash Commando, Fat Princess and Flower. As if Sony's 1st party Blu-ray titles for the next six months aren't awesome enough, the tidal wave of PSN downloadable games coming should keep us all busy well into 2009. Bring it on.

%Gallery-30084%

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
