Reports say that the PS3 is closing the gap between itself and the Wii from 6-to-1 to 1.7-to-1 for last month. That huge difference is in no doubt thanks to the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4. What's interesting is that even with a big-name exclusive like MGS4, the PS3 still failed to beat out the Wii for the month of June. In fact, with all the media hype and fanfare for MGS4 gone, it's hard to tell when we'll ever see such a huge spike again.

The second week after MGS4's launch ended up seeing the PS3 slunk down into fourth place on the gaming hardware charts. So are we going back to the old 6-to-1 figures? Looks like it to us -- for awhile at least. The PS3 caught up for the month of June, but that's pretty much it folks. The PSP on the other hand ...

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

DualShock 3's available this Friday in Europe

We've just received word from Sony that the long-awaited European release of the DualShock 3 is coming soon. We'll have our hands clasped around the buzzing wonders from Friday the 4th of July and they will cost £39.99 (we've requested a price in Euros too, because we know how much you love those).

There's no word on whether any different colours will be available, so we're going to assumed that you'll have a choice between black and black. You can count on SCEE to announce something so long-awaited without a modicum of pomp or ceremony. Despite the lack of a fanfare, we're happy to see DualShock 3s finally becoming standard everywhere in the world. All that's left is to phase out the SIXAXIS models and start bundling DS3s with all PS3s. Backing up the claim, Reeves stated: "The PS3 install base is growing faster than the PS2's was at this point in its lifecycle." Currently, the PS3 is around the 13 million mark in worldwide sales after having launched back in late 2006 -- that's ten percent of the PS2's current lifetime sales and six years to play catch up.

"The next five years are going to be turbulent. But I think it is going to be the most exciting period that we have ever seen in the past ten years of videogames," he added. With a recent big exclusive just released and many more on the way, we're not surprised by Mr. Reeves' confidence. However, that confidence isn't cockiness, "We welcome all competition. Whatever happens, we are all going to do well. We should celebrate the growth of the industry." We're happy to see such optimism and goodwill, and we'd like to see Mr. Reeves' predictions come true. We still think, however, the PS3 has a long way to go in proving itself to its older brother the PS2.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Solid state hard drives offer little gain in PS3

One of the great things about PS3 is the ability throw your own hard drive into the system, without voiding the warranty. Many PS3 hardcore have already put faster, bigger hard drives into their consoles. But what about the latest tech, solid state hard drives? Do they offer any benefit to PS3 owners?

Solid state hard drives have been around for a while, but only recently have they dropped in price to something far more reasonable. Without any moving parts, they consume less energy and can be found in an increasing number of mobile devices, like the MacBook Air. However, putting the drive in a PS3 offers interesting results.

Gamespot did a thorough PC-like evaluation of the drives, and showed that writing to the disc is significantly slower. For example, the infamous Devil May Cry 4 installation goes from 21.2 minutes to a whopping 32.5 minutes -- better buy another sandwich! However, load times do decrease due to the speediness of read times off a solid state drive. Grand Theft Auto IV, for example, loads 4 seconds faster on a system equipped with a solid state drive.

Considering how these drives are upwards of $400, there is very little incentive to get a solid state drive. As important it is for things to load quickly, it's just as important to make sure data is written efficiently. For those trying to upgrade their hard drives, a standard high-rpm drive looks to be in order.

[Via Digg]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

BenHeck's one-handed controller available for preorder

Attention readers! If you've been waiting for the standard 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, which includes a 80GB PS3, a regular copy of Metal Gear Solid 4, and a DualShock 3 controller, you're going to have to fight the thousands of others that are undoubtedly also waiting to buy the system. You can try your luck in stores on June 12th, when the system (and game) releases ... or you can test your luck with amazon.com tomorrow (Friday).

According to the online retailer, "demand for this item is so great, we anticipate selling out very quickly." Thankfully, you'll have a slight edge over others who may be browsing the site. The bundle will be available at 10AM PST (1PM EST) tomorrow. Get your F5 buttons ready -- and g'luck to all of you.

Update: Please note that the system will be $499 when it is available tomorrow. Any prices you see right now are third-party resellers that are free to charge whatever they want to -- and they want to charge a lot.

%Gallery-20251%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Plug 'n play: tablets work well with PS3

You can plug all sorts of USB devices into your PS3. For example, you can plug in a keyboard and mouse into the system, making your PS3 a rather capable internet browsing device. Binaryfiend from YouTube discovered that you can also plug in a USB tablet, and the PS3 will accept the connection no questions asked. Watch as he quickly surfs through the XMB faster than a standard controller, and see how comfortably he can use the PS3 with just a stylus.

PS3's ability to interface with a variety of non-proprietary devices is really amazing. Add this to the growing list of gadgets we can connect to our systems: keyboards, mice, printers.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

80GB MotorStorm packs discontinued

File this under the "no duh" category. The current 80GB pack, which includes a SIXAXIS controller, 80GB PS3 system and a copy of MotorStorm is no longer being sent to retailers. "Retailers aren't getting any new inventory of the 80GB Motorstorm bundle," a Sony rep told Joystiq. However, on June 12th, the 80GB PS3 bundle will be replaced by the much more attractive Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle. For the same price, purchasers will get a rumble-ready DualShock 3 controller and a copy of the biggest game of the <strike>year</strike> forever. That's a pretty sweet deal.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Fan makes his own Gunmetal PS3

Why bother with Konami's ridiculously overpriced Metal Gear-themed Gunmetal PS3 when you can simply make one? That's the mentality PlayStation forum user dieselstation had when he did a very careful paint job on his PS3. If he has the 80GB model, he already has a system far superior to Konami's offering. Heck, it would be able to play the Metal Gear Solid games from the PS2 era. Good job, dieselstation!

Check out more pictures here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gunmetal MGS4 bundle spotted on Play.com

So confused. It's only been a number of hours since we told you that there will be no gunmetal Metal Gear Solid 4 hardware bundle in the UK. Imagine our surprise, then, when one of our commenters linked us to a pre-order page on Play.com for exactly that. There's no written info on the page and the only thing that's for certain is that the PS3 will have a 40GB hard drive and that it's exclusive to Play.com. That's if it exists at all.

We're not sure whether to believe Konami PR (via Gamespot) or Play.com. If you're in the market for a kick-ass looking PS3 + MGS4 for a pretty decent price (£329), then get your pre-order in. The worst that can happen is that Play.com send out a few "whoops!" emails. The Gunmetal Limited Edition Metal Gear PS3 will be available for pre-order next Monday, exclusively on the Konami official website. The production run will be rather small, so those that are interested will most likely have to act fast. Available for $599.99, the package includes a gray 40GB PS3 system, matching DualShock 3 controller, and the Limited Edition version of Metal Gear Solid 4 (game, documentary Blu-ray disc, official soundtrack). Considering you're getting the 40GB PS3 (which costs $399.99), you're paying much more than retail for this package -- but that's the price you pay for fandom.

A regular Metal Gear bundle, which includes a standard black 80GB console, will also be available for $499.99.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Official Sony external hard drives a possibility

David Reeves, boss of SCEE, has admitted that keeping only the 40GB PS3 on shelves is a worry in his mind in terms of consumer storage space. His mind has calculated a possibility for "official" Sony external hard drives. We find that a little odd because Reeves even reminds us that the PS3 has an easily replaceable hard drive already: "The PlayStation will stay the same, but consumers can choose whichever size of hard drive they want. They can now, of course, because it's not a proprietary hard drive." So why external hard drives? Maybe people are scared to crack open their PS3. Maybe they don't have anywhere to dump all the information before switching the new hard drive in.

Any external hard drive, as far as we can tell (using a 120GB Western Digital currently -- it's old) works already. Reeves said there's no rush for this idea, though. "We've played the games with the hardware, with different hard drives and things like that, and we want to keep it very, very simple. We know that works." What do you guys think? Would you grab an official external, get a third-party, or just slap a new laptop hard drive direct into the system? Those of you who've done the latter, how has it worked since?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

MGS4 bundle is deploying in Europe

Well, guess it turns out that Europe is getting a Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle after all. The only drawback is that this bundle doesn't include a DualShock 3 (SIXAXIS only) unlike the recently revealed Japanese "welcome boxes" and North America's own bundle. The new Snake-tastic bundle is another 40 GB system which will be available by the international release date of June 12. The bundle is currently set at €439.99.

[Via press release]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Metal Gear Solid bundles say 'welcome' in Japan

For those native to America, a trip to Japan can be quite a shock. Not only is everything clean ... everything is polite. Perhaps its the Japanese insistence to courtesy that dubbed this Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle the "Welcome Box." This package will embrace you with a 40GB system (colors of choice include: Clear Black, Ceramic White and Satin Silver), rumble-ready DualShock 3 and copy of MGS4. It will be available in Japan on June 12 for ¥49,800 (~$470). The limited edition "Hagane" Grey MGS4 bundle retails for ¥51,800, by comparison.

Sans numbers, this version has a smaller size, a lighter weight, and a cheaper cost. It's a triumvirate of awesome-sauce.

In the first two generations of heat sinks, the RSX and Cell were both cooled by one giant heat sink, but now they are cooled by two separate ones. Copper heat pipes are no longer used. Power consumption is down to about 135W, compared to launch PS3's using about 200W's. It also cuts the weight in half, from 700g to 350g because it's using fewer components. Sure, it's all technical, but it's awesome to see how much our lovely machine is evolving without us ever really noticing. Nice job, Furukawa Electronics.

[Via PS3Forums]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

GTA IV bundle confirmed for Europe

SCEE has confirmed the existence of the Grand Theft Auto IV PS3 bundle that we've been seeing around the net for a little while. The bundle will be available, seemingly, across Europe at a price of £319.99 or €439 on April 29th, day and date with the game itself. Inside you will find a 40GB PS3 along with a SIXAXIS controller and a copy of the game. For the price, it's not a bad deal. Nothing special, but good enough to be tempting.

We're certainly intrigued to see how many PS3s GTAIV will push and a bundle like this can only be a good thing. So if you haven't got a PS3 yet and are thinking of picking one up for what is, arguably, the biggest game release of the year, you know what to go for.

[Via Press Release]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gunmetal PS3 not ruled out for Europe

If SCEE does plan on releasing the Gunmetal Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 in Europe then they're leaving it a little late. Regardless, a European release may still be on the cards according to videogaming247, which states that their Sony contact is waiting on official word from On High. "I've asked if we're getting this but have yet to have an answer confirmed," said their Sony representative.

If the Gunmetal PS3 is coming to Europe, why haven't we heard about it yet? One of the reasons might be the DualShock 3, which still doesn't have even a vague release date for Europe. Considering one of the big selling points of the MGS4 bundle is the new rumbling controller, announcing one without it would give Europe just another reason to be angry at how they're treated by the Video Game industry. There's no telling whether DualShock 3s will even be available separately in time for MGS4's June 12th release date. Here's hoping, though!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
