As reported earlier, firmware 2.40 has been taken down. Playstation.Blog has a post acknowledging problems with their latest firmware and assures us that it's only temporary. A commenter concerned about those who have 2.40 installed already was met with a response of "we've received no reports of hardware issues following a successful install," so those of you who have already installed the firmware have nothing to worry about. Stay with us as more information is available.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Firmware 2.40 removed from update servers

We're receiving reports that PS3s are no longer updating to firmware 2.40. Consoles currently running 2.36 are stating that there are no available updates when a system update is attempted. It seems that downloading the firmware from the official sites is also impossible. Firefox 404s out on the Japanese, European and American sites. Has the latest firmware been pulled from the net? If so, why? If you're having issues with grabbing the latest update be sure to let us know.

We'll be contacting Sony to find out exactly what's going on, so keep an eye on us for more info. Hopefully soon.

Update: Confirmed. Firmware 2.40 is currently unavailable.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

2.40 is out, go download it now

It's that time again, firmware update time. The huge one is finally here: 2.40. So, without a doubt, we're sure you're all very anxious to go grab it already. Five bucks says most of you didn't even bother to read what is being written here and just saw the headline and ran off on us. We don't blame you. With that, we'll keep it short and enjoy our new firmware features.

[Thanks Tim P., and everyone who sent this in!]

Update: Super Stardust HD patch is live. Thankfully, the second Firmware 2.40 video is up now on the PlayStation.Blog and, this time, Eric Lempel guides you through the wonderful world of Trophies.

In our opinion, Trophies look pretty hot. From the overall premise, to the way the comparing of Trophies with friends is implemented so that you can see what games you and your friends own. Not only that, but the "You got a Trophy" message is exactly how we would want it to be. The only thing we have to wonder is, will there be some satisfying sound effect to accompany the message?

So there you have it. Firmware 2.40 has been fully revealed and will be available to download on July 2nd. Yeah, that's the day after tomorrow. There's no word on when older games will be patched to incorporate Trophies, but believe us when we say we'll be hounding publishers until they tell us. Most future games will support Trophies out of the box, including PSN downloads. So, what do you think?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Everything you need to know about firmware 2.40

Click for high-resolution image.

So, we're finally able to talk officially about PS3 firmware 2.40. Available July 2nd, this hotly anticipated firmware update has been the topic of discussion throughout various internet forums and our own site. Many rumors stemmed from supposed leaks, and we can now say that many of these reveals were right on the money. The features to be added in firmware 2.40 represent the biggest jump for PS3 owners, more so than 2.00 released a few months earlier. The key features of the update include the most-wanted things voiced by a majority of PS3 fans. In-game XMB and achievement-like trophies are the two biggest additions to this update.

In-Game XMB
Finally, in-game XMB will be implemented for the very first time. When one presses the PS button, it will bring up with entire XMB. No features are hidden in this menu; you will be able to see all of your Photos, Music and Video. While everything can be seen, not everything can be accessed from the menu. For example, if you want to click on a video, a message will tell you that the game will end if you proceed any further. This will allow players to jump from one activity to another quickly on the PS3. For example, you can jump from a game of PixelJunk Monsters, directly into Resistance 2. Then, you can quick to a video on the hard drive, and then listen to some music. It makes the entire system much easier to use.

%Gallery-26322%
While many features of the XMB won't be fully accessible whilst in a game, there are many things players will be able to do. For example, fully interacting with a friends list is finally possible. No longer do you have to quit the game in order to check a friend's message. You can add friends, check and send messages, and adjust Bluetooth settings on the fly. However, you won't be able to initiate a voice chat. You also will not be able to use music from your hard drive, unless the game is specifically programed to take advantage of the feature. Unfortunately, no games will be able to take advantage of in-game custom soundtracks when the firmware update goes live. (However, future games and game patches can enable this feature. It depends on whether or not the developer chooses to include it in their game.)

Unlike the Xbox 360's Dashboard, triggering the in-game XMB runs without any delay. You will be able to bring up the XMB instantly and use its features as easily as you would outside of a game. If you want to bring up the usual power options, to turn off the controller or system, simply hold down the PS button for a bit longer.

Trophies
The other big feature of firmware 2.40 is trophies, PS3's answer to Xbox 360's achivements. Those familiar with achievements on Xbox 360 will find many similarities here, especially with the interface implemented. Under [Game] on the XMB, players will be able to find their Trophy Collections, which shows all the trophy-compatible games played. By clicking through, players will be able to see all the trophies they unlocked, and what trophies remain. Details on how to acquire each trophy are available -- although some will be hidden, similar to Secret Achivements on the Xbox 360.

Each trophy has a different value, represented by its Gold, Silver and Bronze color. Each of these trophies add to a gamer's "level," a representation of how many achievements they've unlocked. Each game can only offer a set amount of level, so each developer must allocate how many Bronze, Silver and Gold trophies they want to offer. The intent is to make each colored trophy of equivalent value -- a Gold trophy in Resistance 2, for example, should be as difficult to earn as a Gold trophy in Motorstorm. If players are able to earn all the trophies in a single game, they'll unlock a valuable Platinum trophy, which will add an incredible amount to a gamer's level.

The first games to take advantage of trophies will include Super Stardust HD, PAIN, Warhawk and PixelJunk Eden. Games that have been released before this firmware update must be patched to take advantage of trophies. For example, Super Stardust HD will be patched "within hours" of the firmware's availability. Obviously, future Sony first-party titles will all support trophies, but third parties are also planning on taking advantage of this feature. For example, Bioshock will include trophy support.

Developers will have to choose whether or not to include trophy support. However, if any previously released titles get patched (a la Super Stardust HD), players must essentially start anew to get any trophies. Trophies will not be retroactively awarded based on save data.

Gamer Profiles
Also new to firmware 2.40 are expanded gamer profiles. Previously, looking at a gamer's profile only revealed their avatar, phrase and languages spoken. Now, players will be able to see the most recent trophies you've acquired and your gamer level. Of course, players will able to see your information as well. Both of you will be able to compare the trophies you've acquired. Just like Xbox Live, you can see all the games both players have played, and you can see when each trophy has been unlocked. See an example here.

A Few Other Things ...
A few small things have also been added to the upcoming firmware. Now, you'll be able to see the time on the top-right hand corner, just like you would on your PSP. Also, the recently added Google search of PSP firmware 4.00 can now be found on PS3. (Be grateful that this firmware update features much more than its PSP counterpart.) Finally, you can now have up to 100 friends on your Friends list. Wait ... that's already available!

Honestly, we cannot wait for firmware 2.40. What we've detailed so far should give you a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming update. Of course, it's not like this will be the final update for the system ever -- we can be pleased in knowing that even more awaits us in the future. There are a few features that we need, like persistent voice chat -- but with the addition of achievements and in-game messaging, we're pleased to say that PS3 and PSN offer almost everything Xbox Live can, without the pricetag. The folks at Sony told us they'd thank the enthusiastic support of the fan community -- they listened to your requests of in-game XMB, and they've finally made it available to you. Undoubtedly, they'll continue to listen to PS3 fans and add even more functionality in future firmware updates.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Watch as all your PS3 dreams come true in this 2.40 video

See the guy in the video above? That's Eric Lempel and he's about to show off the number one requested feature for the PlayStation 3; in-game XMB. This feature is only half of what we can expect in firmware 2.40, which is due out "soon." Watch as Eric effortlessly receives and responds to messages whilst playing a game, swaps immediately from GT5:P to PixelJunk Monsters, switches in some background music from the PS3's HDD and ... searches on google.

There's more to come in another video later today, which will show off the trophy system. Not only that, but keep your eyes peeled right here for more detailed, exclusive info on what's to come.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PS3 firmware 2.36 now live

As promised, PS3 firmware 2.36 is live. This is a precursor to the very desirable firmware 2.40, which will include in-game XMB. Firmware 2.36, on the other hand, will only improve "system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles." That's better than nothing, right?

In order to access the PSN, this firmware update is required. For everyone else, you can just wait for the big 2.40 update.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Firmware 2.36 imminent; 2.40 confirmed to contain in-game XMB and trophies

Your PS3 is about to get a digital gift in the form of another firmware update. Version 2.36 will improve "system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles." That is to say, not a lot. Still, the latest PlayStation Blog post has finally confirmed the rumors that another firmware update is on its way at some point. 2.40 will include in-game XMB and trophies. But you already know that.

There's no real timeframe for either of these updates, but you can expect to see v2.36 within the next day or so. As for 2.40, the PS Blog is careful to stress to us that they, and only they, will be the source for when it is coming. You may have heard various rumored release dates for the update which have passed by uneventfully, so that's clearly something to keep in mind. Needless to say v2.40 will get the full video tutorial treatment, as usual. We'll let you know as soon as we're told anything new.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Firmware 2.35 now available to download at your convenience

It's a relatively minor update and one that's supposedly not related to creating more stability for Grand Theft Auto IV. It's April 15th on the East Coast, and firmware 2.30 is already live. The major update for this release is the redesigned PLAYSTATION Store, and boy does it look good. We fell in love the moment we clicked X and heard that new chime that signals the launch of the Store.

You'll find broken image placeholders in many places, as things still seem to be in the middle of construction. Some complained that the O button shouldn't close the Store -- it doesn't anymore. Now, it simply takes you back one page. And yes, the new Store is much, much faster.

There's a few new additions already available on the Store, such as a new Super Stardust HD update and the Lair patch. Go to Network Update on your PS3 and get downloading -- tell us what you think of the new PS Store!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Audiophiles and shoppers will love firmware v2.30

We're not too up on audio-visual technology but we're sure it's very exciting to those who understand it.

V2.30 will add "DTS-HD Master Audio[TM] and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, enabling consumers to enjoy Blu-ray movies with studio-quality, high-definition audio." Apparently these features include various high numbers of things, such as 7.1 channel sound and 96k sampling frequency with 24 bit depths. The point seems to be that "things will sound better." Which sounds good to us.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Eric Lempel talks PS3 firmware 2.20

People have been excited about the latest PS3 firmware, 2.20. However, some many be confused by all the features hidden in this latest update. SCEA's Eric Lempel walks us through the firmware in this very informative feature. Not only does he talk about BD-LIVE, he talks about connectivity with the PSP. Watch how he transfers a playlist to the handheld. Not bad, huh? The internet browser has also been enhanced -- something we've all been waiting for. All in all, this seems like a solid update.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PS3 Firmware 2.20 now live

Whoa, what a surprise tonight huh? We've got some really dedicated readers here; in just a few seconds, our email inbox was flooded with tips about the new PS3 2.20 firmware going live. Indeed, it is. Go update your PS3 now.

In case you don't remember what was previously revealed about this new firmware, allow us to reiterate some of the highlights: DivX content can now exceed 2GB, and resume play enables PS3 to play a BD or DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed. Most of all, it now adds Blu-ray Profile 2.0 support.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PS3 goes BD-Live in upcoming firmware update

Sony has announced today that a new firmware update will arrive for the PS3 later this month. Version 2.20 will add support for Blu-Ray Live (profile 2.0) features such as the ability to download extra content like bonus scenes, ringtones and subtitles. Blu-Ray Live also allows interactive movie-based games to communicate over the internet -- effectively adding online multiplayer support. Other features found in firmware v2.20 include:

"Resume play" will enable PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed. (BD-J format discs are not supported)

"Audio Output Device" will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.

PS3's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's view speed will be improved.

DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.

"Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added as an AV setting in the control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback. (BD discs recorded with BDMV format are not supported)

The update will be released sometime "in late March." In the meantime, now would be a good time to start stocking up on Blu-Ray Live discs. With few other BD-Live compatible players arriving until Summer, the PS3 is once again the best choice of device for Blu-Ray playback. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy these new features months before another player that supports them is released. Pretty good, wouldn't you say?

[Via press release]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Firmware 2.17 is now available for download [Update]

What is this? A new PS3 firmware update? What could be in it? And why such a random number? Mysteries abound in this random late night update. Stay tuned as we download the update and explore the new features of the firmware.

[Update 1: Doesn't appear Sony included notes with this firmware update. Most likely a few bug fixes have been included. The update comes a few hours earlier than expected. The newest firmware, which can be obtained through Network Update from your PS3, enables DivX and WMV video playback, offers Blu-ray Profile 1.1 and includes enhancements to music playback and voice recording.

Update: Unfortunately, some of our DivX files simply didn't play on our system. The ones that do work function perfectly. You can even apply video thumbnails as with any other file. WMV videos also work perfectly. Instead, we the arrival of two highly anticipated features. PS3 firmware 2.01 is now available via Network Update. This minor update will fix a few glitches noted in the big 2.00 release. Hopefully, those that have reported game freezing, and other performance issues, will be able to sigh a breath of relief. Update: Here's the "official" word on what's new:

Improved stability when playing some PS3 format software

Improved stability of some system applications, including the Internet Browser and Information Board

Improved stability of the upscaler for PlayStation format software when played on PS3 models that are backwards compatible

The new Remote Start feature has been changed to avoid an unintentional power-on. Remote Start was introduced in firmware version 2.00 to enhance the Remote Play feature by enabling users to turn on a PS3 system remotely with their PSP system from an Internet hotspot.

Eric Lempel has written up a new post on the PlayStation.Blog in order to tell everyone that a new firmware update is on its way. 2.01 will be available in a few days and will "improve the stability" of the PlayStation 3. Lempel assures us there are specifics to be learnt at a later date and they will let the community know closer to the time.

We know that the PS3 will be receiving an update to allow its Blu-Ray features to support profile 1.1 at some point in the future. We also know that DivX support will be included in a future firmware update. Will these things be included in 2.01? Your guess is as good as ours. We'll let you know as soon as we find out more.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Video: PS3 firmware 2.00 in action

Filed under: Videos and Screenshots, Firmware Updates

If pictures and words weren't enough for you, then here's a low-res video from GamesRadar of the firmware in action. It's not too exciting, until you realize that these blokes have Wipeout HD on their systems. Hey! We want that!
