Good, because you'll have a chance to meet the PlayStation.Blog team and members of the PS3 Fanboy team at a meetup planned for next Tuesday. The get-together will happen at King Taco, and will happen hours after Sony's press conference o' megatons. Full details can be found on Facebook.

But wait, there's more! The Joystiq network meetup is happening next Thursday, and as usual, we'll have tons of swag in hand. The party is going down at the same place as last year: Mahalo HQ. Hope to see some familiar faces, and some new ones! Expect some special surprise guests. Once again, full details can be found on Facebook.

Let us know if you're going to be there! Can't wait to finally see you guys!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Fan-made animated short pays tribute to MGS

Filed under: Videos and Screenshots, Community

This fan made animated short was created by a group of creative and really bored minds called the Duo Group.
David Hayter spoke rather candidly about playing the role of Snake in the Metal Gear series this weekend at Anime Expo. Hayter has made it clear that he'd want to write the Metal Gear movie script, and he's expressed some of his criticisms of the series' storyline. Thankfully, Zac from Kotaku has captured a majority of the panel through shaky-cam. The first series of videos can be seen above -- the rest at Kotaku. For any Metal Gear fan, hearing the famed voice actor speak so bluntly and freely will come as a refreshing treat.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PS3 Poll Police: did you have firmware 2.40 troubles?

Filed under: Polls and Surveys, Community

The Poll Police want to check on something this week since all squad members at HQ (being we, the bloggers) did not have any issues with the 2.40 firmware update. Was the faulty firmware widespread, or limited to enough people that it was a minor issue, but the internet was set on fire anyway because it's fun to rain on somebody's parade? That's probably a loaded question, so let's reword that in the form of a poll.

As noted earlier, none of us had any issues with it and it'll be interesting to see just how many of you intrepid readers have experienced whatever negative issues came with the firmware. What about the results from our last poll? Check 'em out after the 'continue reading' cut below.

We're experiencing the same thing over half of you are -- we've got a tremendous backlog of games we've either started but haven't finished, or haven't even started just waiting for us. This includes games we want to rent, too. Not to mention the PS One and PS2 games we've never quite been able to set aside the time for. But really, the "major blockbuster releases" of the summer may be gone, but there's so much gaming to be had across all the consoles, there's something to fill everybody's time. Pictured is a bottle of Andiera Cabernet Sauvignon which is specially labeled for the Metal Gear Solid launch way back in 1998. It was given only to the game's designers and business partners.

The bottle is being auctioned on eBay with a starting bid at around $250. Whether the actual beverage contained inside is actually quality wine, we don't know -- this blogger isn't a wine drinker. So make sure you know what you're getting into. Perhaps, on a light note, it might be a good time to pick it up; drink some slightly more aged wine and celebrate the end of Solid Snake's story. We couldn't think of a finer time for a toast.

[Via Gamesniped]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Life-sized Solid Snake for sale

Size matters folks. Those puny six inch Solid Snakes that came with Euro Limited Ed. MGS4s are not enough to satisfy. You need something big -- real big. Like, how about a six foot Solid Snake? That's sure to please.

This retail promotional statue comes all the way from Italy and has a starting bid on eBay at around €1,990. It's a pretty steep price to pay, but that's what happens when you call yourself a collector. Even if you're not planning on bidding, check out the auction for more pics of this immortalization of one of the greatest videogame heroes.

[Via GameSniped]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

TripleTags.com gamercards to include trophy support

One of the best thing about achievements and Gamerscore on the Xbox 360 is the ability to show it off to the world through the use of gamercards. These embeddable image files (example, above) allowed players to show off their recently played games, and their ever-growing Gamerscores. According to a recent post on TripleTags.com, the popular (but unofficial) source for PS3 gamercards will be getting support for trophies too. Hopefully, this will mean that players will no longer have to manually edit their gamercards with new games. Instead, a new API should allow the gamercard to update automatically with your recent trophy-enabled games and PlayStation level.

(Also, wouldn't it be great if PS3 Fanboy profile pages could show this kind of info? Maybe if you leave enough comments, we can bother our programmers to do exactly that!)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PS3 trophy addicts can track their games at PS3Trophies.org

In little over a day, PS3 fans will be able to join in the addictive fun of achievements and trophies. Our favorite site for achievement tracking, Xbox360Achievements.org, has just opened a sister site: PS3Trophies.org. This will help trophy addicts keep track of their goals and share tips with like-minded fans.

Obviously, the site is still in its infancy, but already we see incredible potential for the PS3 trophies community.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Boss Extreme, beaten in under three hours [!]

Filed under: Videos and Screenshots, Community

The most hardcore MGS4 players are going to go for the Big Boss <strike>achievement</strike> <strike>trophy</strike> emblem, which requires masterful play with no deaths, no alerts, no kills, no recovery items, no stealth suit and no special items. To get the emblem, the entire game must be completed in 5 hours, but Tyndis from YouTube has managed to do it in less than three hours.

Obviously, because the entire game can be seen in these videos, it should be obviously that this is one giant spoiler. If you haven't beaten the game yet, come back to watch it later. But for those that want to see Metal Gear greatness, enjoy.

[Via Joystiq]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PSN friends list now capped at 100? Or is it? What will you do when these games are finished, in your eyes? Is there more to be had this summer, or is it time to pull out the ol' SNES and finally master that F-Zero track? Maybe even crack out the ol' NES and finally realize games have become much simpler since the days of Battletoads?

We've always got plenty of use for our PS3 -- it's playing our movies, music, and anything we've got stuck on our external hard drives. There are a ton of games to rent and even more in our backlog. While there aren't any big releases until later on in the year, we'll be plenty busy until then. Want to know last week's poll results? Take a look after the cut.

What did we expect when we put this poll up? The results are what we feel also -- this is one of the greatest games we've played. It holds a special significance if you've spent the last twenty years of your life following the path of Solid Snake. It's like you've grown older with him (but at a much slower rate). If it's your first time journeying with Snake, Otacon, and the rest, do yourself a favor and go play the others. Emulators may be necessary for the NES and SNES games. As always, thanks for voting!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

PS3 Poll Police: One last poll for MGS4; your impressions, please

Filed under: Polls and Surveys, Community

It's time for one last push for Metal Gear Solid 4.
If you're leaving a comment in addition to voting, make sure you remain spoiler-free for all those who may not have gotten nearly as far as you. This is one game where not knowing where the story will go is a very important part of the experience. Speaking of experiences, last week's poll results deal with your experience in purchasing the game. See how many of your colleagues were out at midnight with you, or how many of you are sitting back with a scowl, as you ignore the game completely.

We asked what you were doing in regards to Metal Gear Solid 4's release and you answered in pretty large numbers. Since midnight is technically the same as the day of release, about 70% of you went out on day one to get your hands on a copy of Kojima's latest. The rest of you are either taking it easy and picking it up when you're in the area or just aren't into this type of game. Either way, you still voted and we're still honored! Have you ever wanted to star in a video game? Well, this may not be stardom, but it's something. You can become an avatar in the background of the upcoming Street Fighter IV. Capcom-Unity, the cleverly named official Capcom blog, is offering a number of fans to have digital clones of their likenesses injected into the console versions of the fighting game. You'll have to send in "pictures, video, dissertations, limericks, daguerrotypes, singing telegraphs" by next Wednesday, June 18th to be eligible. Check out all the details here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Signed MGS4 Gunmetal bundle on sale at eBay

One truly dedicated Metal Gear fan stood in line to pick up Hideo Kojima's signature on his incredibly rare Gunmetal PS3 system. If you missed your chance to get Hideo Kojima's autograph at the Virgin Megastore last night, then you had a second chance by going downtown to Soho earlier today. Kojima and Ms. Kikuchi were in the neighborhood this afternoon signing autographs inside the UNIQLO flagship store -- a fashion destination for the trendy and bold. They were there to help promote the debut of a new line of Metal Gear Solid 4 T's. (Mr. Kojima is wearing one in the featured picture above.)

Now, what about those not able to make the trip down to UNIQLO today? You guys can experience part of the excitement by checking out our gallery below. Some people traveled all the way from Canada to get here. Some were here since yesterday, enjoying the blistering New York heat all day long. The stories are as varied as the people in attendance. Already, the line is wrapping around the avenue, a feat which reminds us of the NYC launch of the Wii. That's saying something!

We're coming around with swag for you guys! We'll update this post throughout the evening (provided we can find internet).

Update: We've added a ton more images to our gallery. Online retailers have jumped the gun. Not only has Wal-mart gone and broken street dates, but now Play is shipping copies of the game out to pre-orderers today, and Amazon is sending over those hefty 80 gig bundles.

Reader Adam L. shares with us photos of his UK special edition set; you can see more on Flickr. Meanwhile, back stateside, NetworkShadow lets us know he received his MGS4 PS3 bundle today (after the break). Will you be in Times Square tonight, waiting in line to meet Hideo Kojima? Good! Because PS3 Fanboy writers Andrew and Majed will be in attendance, looking for you! We'll be scouring the lines to give away some swag and FOOD for those that tell us the secret code: ANDREW IS A X3F DOUCHEBAG! (Evidence here, here and here.)

We'll be giving away games, snacks (and if we're allowed) access to the secret VIP room where Kojima awaits. We saw hardware revisions for the launching of the 40 GB SKU, the introduction of a new low price point, and the re-imaging of the console. Holiday season 2007 was a huge turn around seeing success in multiple markets. There were a lot of factors in making this positive change happen; however, without a doubt, a big part of this success was attributed to the re-imaging that was achieved with a new ad campaign.

That campaign brought forth the "Universe of Entertainment" and "Play On" television spots by Superfad for agency TBWA \ Chiat \ Day. Senior vice president of marketing & PlayStation Network, Peter Dille, had said about the new campaign: "we wanted to move beyond ... with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here ... and we wanted to make the news loud and clear." Indeed, the message was both loud and clear as stylish visuals blended in with the no-frills promotions for Blu-ray, PSN, and, most of all, the games.

However, looking back, perhaps these commercials are not necessarily "top ten" material on their own merit. What boosts these TV spots onto this list is the context in which we first saw them -- as a breath of fresh air after being smothered with flop marketing. It was like a light going off in people's heads, "Oh, so that's what they've been trying to tell me all along."

9. PS2 - Mountain

Trevor Beattie, then with TBWA London, and Frank Budgen of Gorgeous Enterprises created this memorable UK commercial as part of the "Fun, Anyone?" campaign back in 2003. The TV spot begins vaguely with random people rushing towards some sort of happening; meanwhile, a classic song made famous by Shirley Temple plays out subtly narrating the event -- hordes of people form a human mountain and jock for the top position. Now, it isn't entirely clear that this ad is for the PS2, not until the very end and the copy text pops up; however, that's probably where this advertisement draws its strength.

The initial ambiguity of watching people flock towards something unknown taps into instinctual human curiosity. This opens up the ad to everyone as it's not clear what is being advertised here (and therefore not segmenting the audience), yet it's clear that something big is happening. Its powerful and beautiful images have an air of mystery that drove viewers to watch until the very end, and that's when the full idea comes around. PlayStation 2 is that "train," that "mountain" that people flock to; it's a phenomenon that is fun and competitive. All these themes are shown here and are clearly what all 120+ million of us PS2 owners can empathize with.

In Japan, it's not uncommon for drinks to include Cracker Jack-esque bonuses. This new Metal Gear-themed energy drink from Regain is offering a few goodies when you pick up one at your local Japanese convenience store. Our friend at PSP GadgetZ got all four varieties, and you can check them out here. Our favorite bonus?
