Golden Axe screens from E3

Some screens have been leaked to the internet from the behind-closed-doors unveiling at E3 of the upcoming Golden Axe for the PS3 and Xbox 360, along with a section of the trailer available in video form. While the screens aren't all that great in terms of quality, they confirm a return of the bizarrians (mounts) from the previous games. The game is currently slated for a 2007 release date.

Rainbow Six: Vegas HD video

IGN has posted the E3 video of the 10-minute Rainbow Six: Vegas trailer that ran periodically during E3. What's different this time around, however, is that the video is in HD and you don't have to listen to thousands of people while trying to watch it. Instead, you only have to listen to a few folks providing solid commentary on the trailer. The page for the video can be accessed here.

Heavy Rain interview pours on the details

In this whopping 4 page interview with IGN, France-based development team Quantic Dream, who brought us Indigo Prophecy (or Fahrenheit for you foreigners) discusses their title Heavy Rain. Founder and CEO David Cage, COO and Executive Producer Guillaume de Fondaumière, and Lead Character Designer Thierry Prodhomme were all on hand to reveal more information on the title than there was available at E3 a month ago.

The interview reveals that Heavy Rain will not be a direct sequel to Indigo Prophecy and is a "dark film noir thriller with mature themes." The team is also tossing out the Sci-Fi elements of Indigo Prophecy and aim to ground Heavy Rain totally in reality. Heavy Rain is currently slated for a Fall 2008 release.

More details on Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

Approaching the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the trailers released for the PS3 installment in the Untold Legends franchise, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, looked very polished, but we didn't really get any solid facts on the title. Well, we do know some things now, such as potions are completely gone from the game. Also, it looks like item drops are going to be drastically scaled back, with far less super strong weapons dropping from baddies. The new motion-tilting controller's capabilities are also being looked at for things like dodging, but nothing official has been said. Finally, the game will also feature downloadable content following release, such as new chapter endings, characters, and arenas.

Developers crush PS3 rumors of console being "broken"

You probably definitely caught wind of the article that ran over at The Inquirer that Joystiq reported on earlier. Well, some key developers creating games for the system that you'll soon be playing have stepped up to the podium and have declared it bogus. Some developers, which for some reason do not provide their names, have told that the figures are nothing to worry about.

"I didn't see that slide at Devstation, but all the numbers add up," one coder said, "and it's a total non-issue. You never, ever need to access that memory from the Cell - I can think of some useful debugging things you might do with that access in the testing stage, but that's about it. In fact, on the PS2 you couldn't access that memory from the CPU at all, and it was never really a problem!"

PS3 pricing approaching danger zone?

[insert Top Gun joke here]

Effectu has posed the most obvious of questions. Will the pricing of the PS3 ultimately doom the console to failure? It's true that a console's worth is mostly defined by its games, which has proven to equal great success for the company in the past. So is something like a high price tag going to be the flaw in Sony's armor?

Japanese mags reveal details on FFXIII

Turns out the scenario work on the upcoming game from Square Enix is about 80% complete, according to Motomu Toriyama. Along with the decision to go Blu-ray as one DVD was apparently not enough to contain the beast that is Final Fantasy XIII, the team believes that the shader abilities of the PS3 will help them convey the deep, rich emotion that fans of the franchise demand.

Video of The Darkness

Coming in at a whopping 47.1mb, this 720p video for The Darkness is worth the trouble to download. Developed by Starbreeze Studios, who are responsible for the excellent Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher's Bay, and being published by 2K Games, The Darkness was one of the best three games I was privileged enough to see at E3, although it should be noted that it was demoed on a Xbox 360 when I saw it.

More Final Fantasy XIII images and info

Some more details from Square Enix on the game via The Magic Box:
  • Final Fantasy XIII will not have online functions
  • Each episode will have different and independent characters, the stories also takes place in different times in history
  • The only things in common for the 3 titles are Chocobos, Moggles, magic and myths around the Crystals
  • The Legend of the Crystals is the central theme of the 3 games
  • The latin word "Versus" in Final Fantasy Versus XIII means the change of a direction
  • The latin word "Agito" in Final Fantasy XIII Agito means stimulus or moving violently, this game will have action elements implemented in the system

PS3 online play is free?

PS3Land is stating that they have an actual PR source claiming that the PS3's online multiplayer will be available for free right out of the box. Now, as much as this blogger would love to believe this statement, no factual evidence is presented by the website other than an unnamed Sony Computer Entertainment America PR Manager informing them to "Please note that online gaming will be free right out of the box."

Considering Sony's past of leaving online play and upkeep to the third-party developers/publishers and refusing to adopt a unified online structure like MIcrosoft's Xbox consoles have, should we expect Sony to shift more towards the online model of Microsoft or assume this is just another drop in the well that is internet speculation?

Joystiq: How the star system works

Have you been a long-time poster at Joystiq or one of its awesome network-affiliated sites, only to see others have stars placed next to their name (or negatives) and wonder what exactly dictates that rewarding or stripping of star(s)?  Well, Joystiq's Vlad Cole has broken down the star system to show you exactly how it works. These guidelines apply to all the Joystiq network sites:
  • Value: Does the comment enhance the topic at hand and add new perspective to the discussion? Is it a good question or interesting insight?
  • Impartiality: This is hard, especially for Fanboy sites such as this, but as much as we loudly proclaim this system to be the superior, it detracts from the discussion at hand. It's OK to be touched with Fanboyitis, however try to curb it as best as you can as to not damage the topic at hand whilst commenting.
  • Civility: This is just common sense. We all have opinions and want to share them, however as human beings we have the ability to exercise civility, even during the most heated debate.
  • Other: Humor, wit, and bribes of cold, fresh chocolate milk. We like chocolate milk.
As such, these are the guidelines followed when hiring Bloggers for the network (you have no idea how much chocolate milk it took for me to get the job), so keep that in mind should you one day wish to kill me and take my place. Vlad is answering as many questions as he can over at Joystiq, but if you post any questions here, we'll try the best we can to answer.

Kaz: 15 titles for launch

Sony's Kaz Hirai commented to news site Bloomberg that he expects the company's Playstation 3 to launch with 15 titles this November. This is in contrast to what some third-party higher-ups have been saying, including Sega's Simon Jeffrey and THQ's Brian Farrell. Jeffrey's argument stems from third parties apparently not receiving finalized dev kits yet, which is reportedly supposed to occur this month, where Farrell's recent comments towards choosing to not release a version of the upcoming Sopranos game on the system as it is "too risky" to attempt without final hardware specs form the basis for his disagreement.

PS3 dominates Japanese mind

Famitsu recently issued a report showing the top 10 items of interest to the Japanese from last week's E3. News surrounding Sony's next-gen console dominated the list, with the number one item of interest being the PS3's controller. The list reads as:

  1. Impressions of the PS3 controller
  2. Final Fantasy XIII information
  3. PS3 price and release date
  4. Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Snake playable announcement
  5. PS3 menu & interface
  6. PS3 online service
  7. PS3 game pics
  8. Polymorphic content surrounding FFXIII
  9. Dragon Quest Swords
  10. Square-Enix game pics

You knew it: Controller redesign next week

Coming straight from the "You knew it was coming" file here at PS3 Fanboy, UK-based site T3 is stating that the final controller for Sony's next-gen system will be revealed at their pre-E3 conference on Monday. The current controller, which has been compared to super heroes and fruit, was received with plenty a 'GASP!' and 'What the?!' when revealed last year. Considering that the PS2 has, arguably, the greatest controller in console gaming, hopefully Sony will adopt a "don't fix what ain't broke" strategy.

Tony Hawk coming to a PS3 near you

1up has posted 2 screenshots and have slapped an official title on the next Tony Hawk game that is destined to grace the PS3. Tony Hawk's Project 8 hasn't received any official announcement treatment from Activision yet, which is sure to change come E3, and the only information available through 1up is "continuing in the tradition of the original series, Underground and American Wasteland, the Tony Hawk series of skateboarding titles carries on."
