John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment, is confident that by moving SOE closer to the Playstation division, it will help the PS3 and PSN succeed in the face of Xbox Live and PC's MMOs. In an interview with MCV, Smedley lists SOE's "eight years of experience running an online service" as a major asset they will be able to provide. He believes "retail is exactly the kind of driver" needed for PS3 MMOs and SOE will provide an additional boost in the form of a promise: "The next round of MMOs are made to run on both the PC and PlayStation 3."
However, Smedley smartly avoids questions about the length of time it will take for PS3 MMOs to compete with likes of PC MMOs such as World of Warcraft. He claims the PS3 already has an "online playerbase", while the PSN is "a significant and robust network " and there is "a real hunger" for MMOs, but concedes it will "take some time to build that base even larger."
Smedley claims he is confident about the future of MMOs on PS3, but are you?

Soon the PSN should be as good as Live if not better. ( No cost )

There is no reason MMO's can't thrive on the PS3, and the PS3 with its default harddrive setup is perfectly set-up to run an MMO with their constantly updating content.

I'm genuinely enthused as well, I'd really like to play a good MMO (never been able to stomach them). Ever since TFLO was cancelled I just lost hope of seeing it happen in the console realm. The Agency looks really good though, as does Huxley for 360. One for each, I have high hopes :D

"Smedley lists SOE's "eight years of experience running an online service"" For those playing at home ... that's 8 years of running Star Wars Galaxies, Vanguard, and a whole bevvy of other franchises into the ground. I wouldn't get too hopeful about another SOE MMO.

Since the PS3 supports USB M&K I would only hope they would help make the transition that much easier by allowing M&K, but then again, that could put other players using the controller at a disadvantage, so idk the right call there.....

MMO's can't be like Home or Little Big Planet. They need to be careful of their promising comments if the reality is set so far away people will just get frustrated waiting on it. Home has gone from anxious anticipation to people writing it in as joke relievers.

if mmos are gonna hit ps3, i want all kinds of it, to japanese mmos to western mmos, all of it ! And i hope SCEA always keeps us updated which mmos are coming, cuz it feels like ghostown in this genre (all quiet and never any news futuring mmos for ps3).
