The PlayStation 3 has outsold the Nintendo Wii worldwide for the third time ever for the week of June 7th to June 14th, according to VGChartz. This is the seventh time the PS3 was able to outsell the Wii in the US while in Japan this was the third time. This victory is likely due to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, an incredible deal on the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, and the Walmart deal that included a $100 gift card with the purchase of any PS3. Those of you who were very lucky were able to combine the aforementioned deals. Naysayers like to attribute the Wii shortage in the US for the PS3's triumph, but this time around the numbers are worldwide.
Is the third time the charm? Will this usher in an era of PS3 dominance? What do you guys think?
[Thanks, Trevor!]

This is really reaching. The PS3 is a good system with its own merits. This sort of week by week, day by day dick measuring really does it a diservice, imo.

I was thinking the same thing. If it outsells the Wii at the end of the monthly numbers there's something to write about.

Ughhh... I hope nobody actually takes this seriously. I love my PS3 and all, but I don't need it to be "number 1". 1 week's victory over the Wii after having arguably the biggest release on PS3 and really nothing for the Wii is not that big of news. Also, it is not like it out sold the Wii the way the Wii usually out sells it.
Moving on...

I agree. I love my PS3, I love my PSP, and my DS, and my Wii is.... in the doghouse for lack of games, and I will probably never buy a 360, but I don't need PS3 to be king.
I just need it to NOT be what Gamecube was last gen....

I noticed the tables are really turning in PS3's favor.
Now with a lineup with the like of SOCOM, Resistance 2, LBP, Killzone 2, Infamous, and GOW III, the PS3 is going for the jugular.

i guess this can be considered good news.
but i think we should all move on from hoping sony will come up on top in this "generation" of consoles.
maybe next generation.
somehow, that damn wii has caught the imagination of the masses and it won't let go. it's still a pain in the ass to find one.

I want PS3 to do better than the 360, at least, and it will in the long run. The type of games that are made for the HD consoles would focus more on PS3 than 360. I don't really care if PS3 outsells Wii, but if it eventually does, then good for Sony. In the long run, I only care what ends up best for gaming.

Sony really have managed to put together a bunch of really great titles that are due to be released steadily over the coming months, running all the way through the holiday season, and into the new year. Combined with some very wanted features confirmed (in-game XMB), right now is a great time to jump onto the PS3 bandwagon. It almost feels like the console re-launched right when MGS4 got released.
Everyone knows that they were very much struggling through the first year and a half, but it really seems like they have a plan of attack for the second half of this year.
Personally, the games I can't wait for are WipEout HD and LittleBigPlanet. But will also probably be picking up SOCOM, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. Not even sure what 3rd party games will strike my interest, but I'm sure there will be plenty.

It of course comes down to the games, and finally there is beginning to be a decent line-up for the PS3 (exclusives are the biggest system pushers, naturally.) The Wii doesn't have a lot of great games, so it makes perfect sense that the PS3 is outselling it right now, considering MGS4. I just hope that developers really start to focus on the PS3 and put out some top tier games, because, since December, there's not been much worth buying for it. Developers, wake up and stop the half-baked Xbox ports to PS3, stop the endless onslaught of FPS's, and put something out that is going to make the PS3 worth owning. Learn something from the success of MGS4.

There are plenty of great games on the Wii. It's just that the great game to shovelware ratio is skewed heavily in the favor of teh shovelwarez.

Being a proud owner of all three systems I can say with confidence that this data means absolutely nothing. The battle of the console wars will not be won on a week to week basis but by longevity of the system.
Being that developers are just now cracking the surface of what they can do with the PS3, it is obvious that the PS3 will only gain steam within its projected 10 year run.
The Wii, relies on gimmicks and the its absence of availability. Microsoft is already trying to jump the gun and work on the Xbox 720. Meanwhile PS2's are still selling in abundance.
It is nice to see Sony win these meaningless battles. But five years from now I can say with utter confidence that the 360 and Wii will only be glimmers of the past while our PS3's are still selling strongly into the future.
