The levels we played were quite varied. Players will navigate a globe, littered with icons that represent where each level was created. Already, we saw a map that featured dozens of levels -- an overwhelming amount of content has already been crafted during the game's painfully long development. The adventure mode is where the game will teach players the essentials of LittleBigPlanet: each level will demonstrate the possibilities of the game's incredible engine. Massive mechanical beasts, complex physics-based puzzles, and a number of fun playable gizmos can be found within each level. At the completion of these levels, players will unlock more and more things to use in their own creations.
We were surprised by how challenging each level can be. One level had us being chased by a contraption that threatened to steamroll us into oblivion. If the obstacles placed in front of us weren't enough of a hindrance, the creature shot out fiery balls of charcoal at the characters -- a single touch would char them to death. Yes, your critters can die -- and they'll die quite often!

It was a pleasant surprise to see how challenging, yet still accessible, the designed levels of LittleBigPlanet are. While we all wait patiently for the creation tools to become readily available, it's clear that the team at Media Molecule is trying to create as much original content as possible before shipping the game. Rest assured, it seems like the final retail product will be a rather substantial single and multiplayer offering -- even for those uninterested in creating and sharing their own levels. The limited amount of time we had with LittleBigPlanet has us begging for more. Let's hope a beta or demo comes to satiate us soon.

Looks like the type of game I'd rent rather than buy, but I'd love to give a demo a fair shake.

Andrew, how did the platforming and movement physics feel?
In the earlier builds the jumping seemed a bit floaty. Meaning jumping seemed less about precision and more forgiving. Is this the case?

It's still floaty. You won't have to make very precise jumps (not in the levels we played), but it is something you'll get used to.

looks like a console seller to me. My soon-to-be wife tried to persuade me to get a wii, simply because they have mario games. She likes quirky fun kinda games. I showed her the preview for this game, and she say "ooo, I want that, lets get that". Well... guess what console we're getting now? :)

Congrats on marrying someone who likes 'quirky fun games.'
:)
(Make sure you save time for video games too)

As a proud owner of both a PS3 and a Wii, I can safely say that if you're looking to KEEP your girlfriend happy in the video game department, you had better get that Wii. I love my PS3, but that is certainly not because its library offers a broad selection of simple, "quirky" games (it does not).
When you want Mario, ya gotta have Mario... nothing else will do.

The PS2 had a decent selection of quirky games, so there's no reason why the PS3 will not have the same. It'll still be a good choice.
Mind you, if you get a Wii now, you can enjoy a good selection of fun games. Then at the end of the year, you can get a PS3 as well. Owning game consoles is not like getting married; you can still enjoy more than one.

generally I smile at the comments, but I think I have to clear up a few things.
@ Kspraydad - you sick bastard, I like your thinking
@ macserve - for one she's my fiance - married in just a few weeks. For two her last experience with games is nintendo 64, on which she played exactly one game - dr. mario. I'm the gamer, she just wants to have a game once in a great great while.
@ dave - I'd love to do that - but I think I'll instead buy a ps3, and then save for a whole year so that I can buy a TV that can take some of the better graphics (better than 15 inch TV we inherited). you overestimate my budget.

"If you don't return to the gameplay screen in time, your character will respawn at the next available respawning point."
"...next available..." Does that mean you respawn ahead of where you "died" or at the last door you reached before you "died"? If it's the former, um, that doesn't make too much sense. Why would they let you skip the level by simply doing nothing? If it's the latter, that sucks. I hated those Mario levels where you had to keep up with the screen moving or you would die. Sounds pretty similar. I'm curious to hear if that was as annoying as I imagine it will be. I mean, this game looks...distracting. The backgrounds are moving and they look fun and quirky, and I would probably like to hang for a bit and take in what the level looks like. You know, appreciate the hard work that the people put into designing it. Will I be punished for that?

I think the only time you have to keep up with the camera is on levels where something is chasing you. The rest of the time I imagine you move at your own pace.

note that he said "trailing behind the others" before that comment. I took that to mean if you are playing with others, and fall too far behind and cant get back on screen fast enough, then you will simply respawn at the next respawn gate that the other players get to.
cant wait for this game. the reason my wife and I got a PS3. she also loves katamari and PJM as well. in fact PJM is the first really fun coop experience we have had on our PS3. that is what LBP is going to rule for - fun coop!

LBP will make it this year. Its been playable for awhile, if the networking side of things is going well, it should make it by year end easily.
