It's a sad state of affairs when the only interesting part of a magazine is the rumors section, but that proves to be the case with the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine UK. This month's magazine has a selection of yummy tidbits that may or may not be true. Whether they are or not, they make for interesting conversation starters.First, there's talk of episodic gaming for the PSN this year (Rat Race) and Heavenly Sword 2 story info, even though the game hasn't been announced yet and the studio in charge of the original are working on something else. The next rumor surrounds the release of in-game XMB -- a feature that the magazine promises will be with us by summer, which is a much more desirable release window than "2008."
Ready At Dawn are rumored to be working on a PS3 title (after the brilliant Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus on PSP, we're itchy to see what they can pull off on the PS3). Finally, the bizarre tech-demo-cum-crazy-dream, Linger In Shadows, is said to be a PSN download. That still doesn't really tell us if it's a game or not, but we're definitely looking forward to finding out nearer the time. Lots of exciting rumors for you all to discuss here -- so get started!

You're missing a word there, Jem:

After what has happened with PS3 Home I won't trust In-game XMB to appear until I see it on the firmware update considering it is even more complex than home itself.

Man, whenever I read something that mentions OPM, I always think of the old Ziff Davis publication. Dammit, I miss that mag...

I'd MUCH rather Sony work on slimming down the PS3 OS (and thus abandon things like in-game XMB) so that developers have more RAM to work with.
I also really don't see the point of in-game XMB anyway. I guess the appeal for most people is starting multiplayer games with friends, which is totally impossible to do by sending an SMS or calling them up.

I want in-game XMB because then I don't have to exit my games whenever I see that someone sent me a message. Sure, some games have it built in now, but not all. Not the ones I play.I like to see what my buddies are playing. For example, if I'm in the middle of a game of Oblivion, I don't know if I have three or four buddies playing Burnout Paradise or COD4 or what, unless I exit the game. That's about the only reason I want it, and I can't see that taking up THAT much RAM. They have continually decreased the amount of RAM that the OS requires, with newer versions of the SDK, so they can't very well re-take that RAM now, as they've already freed it up to developers. In-game XMB won't affect that. There is more usable RAM today than there was on launch day.

Also, regarding your ridiculous Nintendo-like comment about phoning or SMSing your friends - first of all, you don't know who is online and playing. What, you're going to call every friend up and ask if they're up for a game? No, it'd take too long. Well, at least for me and the people on my list - we all have a fairly long list of buddies.. Secondly, it's rather silly to call people up long distance at 2am - a time when many people on my list are playing. Plus, people are in different countries, ergo different timezones... So if it's 2am in Vancouver, it's actually 5am at my place - if someone calls me at 5am to organize a game of COD4, I'd flip. Thirdly, I don't have a cellphone, and I know lots of people who don't have one, so SMS is kinda useless. I guess we could just all use Skype, right? No, it doesn't make sense. The functionality exists on an inferior console, and it's going to exist in the PS3, and that's just the way it should be. :P

One particular SCEE team's ability to release home isn't really any indication of SCEI's ability to complete new System Software features.
And I think home is more complex than you give it credit for. For example: streaming user-selected video on a surface in a 3D environment can't be easy, especially when the environment's been customised with dozens of pieces of furniture and random crap, other people even. Must be hard to balance performance.

I too was going to mention the exclusive PS3 GTA4 review. Other magazines would have killed for that. I haven't read it myself though, as it apparently contains a number of spoilers.
Knowing that it scored it's second perfect 10 (after OXM) is enough for me.
Also, we do know that Linger In Shadows is NOT a game (or at least not yet). When it was first shown they announced that it would be released on PSN as an interactive demo. It's just to prove conclusively that it is being rendered in real time, which is rather impressive.
