The Age is reporting that Rockstar had to submit an edited version of Grand Theft Auto IV to the OFLC in order to receive a passing rating. Rockstar confirmed this, but did not clarify what the censored content was. The game officially earned an MA15+ rating last year, Australia's most restricted rating.
This must be really saddening news for all you Aussies. Not only do you have to live with those horribly annoying OFLC ratings crowding your beloved box cover, but they also serve as cruel reminders of the censorship only you must endure. Sad indeed, especially after hearing the good news about the UK version.

Has anyone thought about how bad this game could be for the young minds of Australians? Especially if played whilst listening to heavy metal music?
Seriously though, ebay australia will be stocked to the rafters with uncensored version! I thought Australia was flamin' ok with kinda shit, I reckon we need to have our heads looked at.

Young kids aren't supposed to be playing it, hence the rating restrictions. Also, I don't see why listening to heavy metal whilst playing should make any difference. I suppose I'll order it from New Zealand, nice and close and unedited.

I urge all Australias gamers to import the game, the money your enonomy loses as a result should make the nanny state politicians sit up and realise people want to be make their own decisions about what they should and should not see. Another point to this is the PS3 will really benefit from this, seeing as the 360 version will also be censored, but the Oz xbots will be stuck with the gimped version. (so much for your exclusive downloadable content)

Before i import, i want to make sure the multiplayer won't be region locked. If the content of the games are different, will that mean importing the game will restrict you to play in US only servers? Or do you think the multiplayer will be fine?

Feel really bad because I was ready to order mine from the US to here in the UK. Just glad that they let it pass over here... guess they haven't got much of a choice.

Has Rockstar responded yet?
Would be interesting to see how they tackle this; would they go down Manhunt 2 root of editing the game or try and appeal the decision?
But seeing as how PS3 is region free, i can't imagine them trying that much, its not like GTA IV can't be imported as jayj is doing.

Cool, it's actually going to work out cheaper to import even with shipping. US$60 on amazon.com which is around AU$65. Costs AU$120 at EBGames here in Australia.

You can't buy games off Amazon if you don't live in the US. Believe me, I've tried.

It is because we have a highest rating of MA15+. If we had an 18+ rating, then it would be unedited. I read a few days ago people are trying to introduce an 18+ rating, so maybe eventually we will get the unedited version.
