Disgaea 3 certainly doesn't look "next-gen" at first glance. However, Nippon Ichi swears that this title simply wouldn't be possible on any other platform. Marketing coordinator Jack Niida, commented about the game's sprites, and the complexities they feature:
"It's simply because PS2 lacks the processing power and memory capacity to support Disgaea 3," Jack told Joystiq. "PS2 could not load the same amount of data on to memory and process it like the PS3; therefore, we decided to develop it for the next-gen platform." He added that "the character sprites for Disgaea 3 take 3~4 times the amount of labor to create compared to Disgaea 2," and the team is "doing our best to improve the sprites."
Regardless of the fidelity of the graphics, there's something truly charming about this upcoming strategy release. The series' trademark humor certainly goes a long way in compensating for any visual shortcomings.
PS2 not powerful enough to handle Disgaea 3

N1 really have an awesome track record when it comes to optimize code well after Japan release. Disgaea 3 from what I heard, suffers from major framerate drops during certain parts of the game when it becomes real hectic. so by the time the US version is out they'll iron out like 90% of the problem.

I never played a game in this series. I simply think that if a game like Odin Sphere & FFXII is possible on the PS2, certainly this game could be. But that's okay. The PS3 needs some heavy-hitters this year. And yes Suki, the extra time for localization should allow the developers the time necessary to fix the framerate.

The more 2-d games the better. It's nice to see a 2-d game on one of the newer consoles.
But it's always the same excuse. "If the game is in 2-d, then it should be on the handhelds or XBLA/PSN/WiiWare"
I know the graphic whores will disagree. but who cares. I love 2-d games! (It's a dying art IMO)

Capcom is your company this generation then. They have some 2d releases and re-releases due out pretty soon. I still like 2d art also.

I used to LOVE NIS... until I saw they hoed out Disgaea to the DS... LAME! Was looking forward to buying Disgaea 3, but it makes me sick that developers sell game rights to anyone with a couple bucks. Disgaea DS... please.
