While Japan has had Disgaea 3 since the end of January, Americans can now rest safe in the knowledge that the game will be heading to America this year. We're happy to hear that the game will be heading west this August, adding another great game release to the burgeoning PS3 release schedule this year. There's no word on a European release, but that's one of the reasons why we love the fact that the PS3 is region free, right?
Disgaea 3 features new abilities which allows the player to alter the terrain during battles. No doubt we'll be seeing plenty of screenshots and videos over the coming months, but there have already been several Japanese videos which are worth a look. Be sure to check them out if you're curious.

So I've never played any of these games, but looks interesting enough. Seems like a Final Fantasy Tactics or Vandal Hearts-ish game? Yes? No? Differences? Anyone?

Oh wow, lots of differences! But it is like FFT!
Let's see, story doesn't take itself seriously. There are many different classes, and several different tiers for each. You can reach level 9999, uhm...what else, oh! There are team attacks, attacks where you stack on top of one another, attacks where you turn an adjacent monster into a weapon and attack with it. A lift and throw unit option, which is EXTREMELY useful. Things called Geo panels that set certain conditions for the tile assigned to. A Dark assembly, which is basically a council you can bribe to unlock new classes and abilities...
So, while it is similar to FFT on a basic level, it has many, MNAY improvements on the system and things that make it its own unique game as well. Buy it if you like SRPGS, I swear it won't disappoint! :D

I do enjoy SRPGs -- I loved FF Tactics, the Front Mission series, and even the little-known Ring of Red for the PS2. That said, I couldn't get through the first Disgaea. The thing that bothered me most about it was the need to "reboot" your characters back to Level 1 and level them up again in order to access the better classes and make them worthwhile in the later game. That routine just got tiresome. And while the ability to dive into the "item world" seemed cool, I found it overwhelming. You could spend hours amplifying an item, but then better ones would show up in the later game.
Then there was the whole Demon Court thing... neat at first, but damn tiring after a few dozen visits.
Maybe I missed something. Maybe I was doing things the hard way somehow, but it felt like the game required more hours of investment than I was willing to spend doing level-grinding. And it was a kind of two-steps-forward, one-step-back level grind.
There was a lot I liked about the game. The story, the wide variety of tactical options, the writing and characters... all great. But I thought it could use some streamlining.
Never played the second one. What did they change?
