Isn't Kotaku said Sony only count units "sold" now, not shipped anymore?

It's going to be awkward seeing as Sony won't want to upset the other BDA members, but pushing the PS3 as a legitimate Blu-ray player for people that have zero interest in gaming would certainly help sales, especially after the big announcement today.

Great news. The PS3 really is beginning to show its true colours now, and over the next year things can only get better.

From what I understand, they did drop the 'shipped' in favor of 'sold' numbers. Even if it weren't the case, it's not like retailers would purchase the systems if they weren't selling.

Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony did reach the goal by March. I work at a Gamestop, and I've really seen the momentum for PS3 increase dramatically recently, not to mention that my coworkers and I push the PS3 heavily over other systems, as it is, of course, the superior system.

For the billionth time:
All 3 console manufacturers are now using the SOLD TO RETAILER numbers (as opposed to SHIPPED TO WAREHOUSE numbers that SONY used until Spring 07).
So yes...it is SOLD. But NO it isn't SOLD to consumers it is SOLD to retailers.
So take the above number (as of DEC 31 2007 BTW) and subtract the consoles sitting on store shelves...that is the SOLD TO CONSUMER number.

James.
The 'authority' of my statements comes directly from SONY and their press releases and annual statements.
They are public and available for you to read anytime you wish.

You are probably correct, but I doubt very much that there are 3 million sat on shelves right now.

It is an impressive piece of hardware, and if you can afford it, you should get one.
The games are there now, BluRay of course, and it is the best dvd player I have used (PQ wise)

What's with the author of this article doubting the amount sold? Do you even follow NPD, or even go to VGChartz. PS3 has been sitting at 9 mil for a while and went up to 10mil and to 10.5. Why would this be shipped? Why would you even suggest that?

Sony actually counts units sold to consumers. Source: http://kotaku.com/357883/ps3-hits-105-million-sold
So unless you know something that these guys don't...
Bottom line, if you look at the global sales of PS3, they are MUNCHING away at the xbox. 10.5 mil vs 17.5 mil and the xbox has been out twice as long. Now that the HD wars are over, you can't find PS3s at Fry's or Best Buy. This year will see MS take a hard hit from Sony and thats because of quality product and planning. Unlike MS who shoots for "First to market at any cost" and "buy off developers with exclusive deals". Argue all you want, but the proof is right in front of you and all you have to do is look.

PS3 has sold 10 million? no way
I know this website is just an estimate but its an unbiased source and bases its numbers off of actual sales rates http://nexgenwars.com/
No harsh feelings but I think Sony is defiantly just counting the "shipped" consoles instead of actually sold
